You pay for the transaction’s size and the fee rate you choose—not simply for the amount of bitcoin you send. To spend less, match your fee rate to your urgency, wait when timing is flexible, or consider Lightning for a suitable payment. No fee choice guarantees a confirmation time.
Why are Bitcoin fees so high?
Bitcoin blocks have limited room for transactions. When more people want to send transactions than there is available space, they compete by offering fees. Miners choose transactions according to their own selection policies, so transactions with more competitive fee rates are generally more attractive for inclusion.

High fees therefore reflect competition for block space, not a problem with your wallet or a fee calculated as a percentage of the amount sent. Bitcoin.org explains the relationship between demand and fees in its Bitcoin transaction fee explainer.

Why do Bitcoin transaction fees change?
Demand for block space changes over time. When demand is low, users may be able to get transactions confirmed with lower fee rates. When demand rises, users seeking prompt confirmation compete for the same limited space, and the rates wallets recommend can increase. There is no single correct fee rate that applies at all times.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Wallet fee estimates are forecasts based on conditions and the wallet’s approach to estimating them. Different wallets may recommend different rates, and none can promise when a transaction will confirm.
How is a Bitcoin transaction fee calculated?
Wallets commonly show a fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte, or sat/vB. A rough calculation is:

Fee in satoshis = fee rate in sat/vB × transaction size in vB
The transaction’s virtual size matters because it determines how much block space it uses. More inputs or outputs generally make a transaction larger and can increase its fee at the same rate. The bitcoin amount being transferred is not, by itself, the basis for the network fee. Bitcoin.org gives about 140 vB as an example of a simple transaction with one input and two outputs; that is an illustration, not a guaranteed size for every payment of that kind.

For conversion, 100,000,000 satoshis equal 1 BTC. The fee itself is paid in bitcoin, represented in smaller units as satoshis.
How can I pay less Bitcoin transaction fees?
Choose a rate that fits your urgency
Check the fee options or estimate in your wallet. If the payment is urgent, a higher offered rate may make it more competitive for block space. If you can wait, choosing a lower rate may reduce the cost, but the estimate is not a confirmation-time guarantee. Wallets may calculate and present estimates differently.

Wait if the payment can be delayed
A lower-fee transaction can remain unconfirmed while demand is high. If it stays available in the mempool, it may be selected later as conditions change. Waiting can avoid paying more to speed it up, but there is no fixed wait time that applies to every transaction.

Consider transaction size
Because the fee depends on virtual size as well as the rate, check the size and fee information your wallet displays. A transaction with more inputs or outputs generally uses more space. Wallet controls and the information they show vary, so consult the wallet’s own documentation before relying on a particular setting.

Use Lightning when the payment fits
Lightning can be an option for small or frequent payments when both the sender and recipient, and their wallets, support it. Bitcoin.org describes Lightning transfers as near-instant and says fees are typically a tiny fraction of a cent. That is a general characterization, not a guaranteed price or timing for every route, wallet, or current network condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long will a low-fee Bitcoin transaction take?
There is no reliable universal wait time. A low-fee transaction may confirm after demand eases, but it can remain unconfirmed while higher-priority transactions use available block space. Your wallet’s estimate can help you weigh cost against urgency, but it predicts rather than guarantees confirmation.
Can I speed up a stuck Bitcoin transaction?
First check the transaction’s status in your wallet and review its current fee options. If it remains unconfirmed, waiting may be enough. Some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF), which can let you replace an eligible transaction with one offering a higher fee. Whether that is possible depends on the wallet, the transaction, and the policies of nodes handling it; not every transaction can be replaced.
Bitcoin Core’s bumpfee RPC is documented for an opt-in-RBF transaction in that wallet and has constraints. It is not a feature every wallet exposes, nor does it make every transaction replaceable. Bitcoin Core’s relay and mempool policies also change across software versions, so a policy described for one release should not be assumed to apply to every node or wallet. For background, see BIP 125 and the Bitcoin Core 31.0 release notes.
Quick Recap
Which fee option should you choose?
| Situation | Practical choice | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| The payment is urgent | Consider a higher fee rate offered by your wallet. | A higher rate aims to improve competitiveness; it cannot guarantee a confirmation time. |
| You can wait | Consider a lower offered rate and wait for demand to ease. | The transaction may remain unconfirmed while demand is high. |
| An existing transaction is delayed | Wait, or check whether your wallet offers RBF for this transaction. | Replacement depends on wallet support, transaction eligibility, and node policy. |
| The payment is small or frequent | Consider Lightning if the sender, recipient, and wallets support it. | Fees and timing depend on the route and wallet; broad descriptions are not guarantees. |
