In North American English, “bison” and “buffalo” usually mean the same animal: the American bison, Bison bison. “Bison” is the preferred term in scientific and formal writing, while “buffalo” is a long-established common name with cultural importance.
The words do not describe one animal worldwide. African and Asian buffalo are different animals from the American bison. The National Park Service summarizes the North American usage directly: “In North America, both ‘bison’ and ‘buffalo’ refer to the American bison (Bison bison).”

Why North Americans use two names for one animal
The naming overlap developed in ordinary North American speech. People used “buffalo” for the large, shaggy grazer they encountered, and the word remained established in place names, traditional expressions, tourism and everyday conversation. Zoologists and other scientists generally use “bison” because it identifies the animal’s genus and avoids confusion with buffalo from other continents.

That makes “buffalo” common usage rather than a simple factual error. In a scientific paper, species account or formal educational text, however, “American bison” or Bison bison is the clearer choice. (National Park Service, Wind Cave National Park)

“Buffalo” can also mean different animals
Outside the North American naming convention, “buffalo” commonly refers to buffalo species native to Africa or Asia. Those animals are not American bison. The National Park Service specifically cautions that American bison are not related to African or Asian buffalo species. A sentence that uses “buffalo” without a geographic qualifier can therefore be ambiguous.
Use the geographic or scientific name when the distinction matters:
- American bison: Bison bison, the species found in North America and the animal usually meant by “buffalo” in North American conversation.
- African buffalo: an Old World buffalo, not an American bison.
- Asian buffalo: another group of Old World buffalo, also distinct from Bison bison.
The available National Park Service material establishes this broad separation but does not present a complete species-by-species comparison of African and Asian buffalo. It is therefore safer to identify those animals by continent or species rather than infer detailed physical differences from the word “buffalo” alone. (National Park Service, About Bison)

- Shoulder hump: the back rises prominently over the shoulders.
- Heavy head: the head is large and carried low relative to the body.
- Dense front-of-body coat: the head, neck and forequarters have especially long, heavy hair.
These traits are practical identification clues, not a replacement for a species-level identification guide. Lighting, season, age and viewing distance can change how pronounced the hair or hump appears. They nevertheless explain why the animal is so visually distinctive in photographs and in the field. The National Park Service’s bison information describes the prominent shoulder hump and heavily haired head and forequarters as characteristic features. (National Park Service, About Bison)
Plains bison and wood bison
“American bison” is not limited to one uniform population. The National Park Service identifies two North American forms:
| Common name | Scientific name used by the National Park Service | What the name tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Plains bison | Bison bison bison | A recognized North American form of the American bison |
| Wood bison | Bison bison athabascae | Another recognized North American form of the same species |
Both names belong within the American-bison classification. Calling either one a “buffalo” may be understandable in casual North American speech, but “plains bison” and “wood bison” communicate more information and are preferable when the particular form is relevant.
Why “buffalo” is not simply wrong
A historical common name
The word “buffalo” has been used in North America for centuries, so correcting every speaker who says it can obscure how language actually works. The National Park Service treats it as a longstanding common name while recommending “bison” for scientific purposes.

A qualified etymology
One National Park Service account associates the North American name with the French words bœuf or boeuf, meaning beef or ox. This is presented as a historical belief about the name’s origin, not as an uncontested fact. It is best described with wording such as “the name is often thought to derive from…” rather than stating the etymology as proven.
Cultural use and Indigenous terminology
Terminology can carry cultural meaning beyond taxonomy. The National Park Service notes that many Indigenous people prefer “buffalo” in a cultural context. Its Wind Cave account also gives tatanka as the Lakota word for bison. That information should not be generalized into a claim about every Indigenous community or language; preferences vary by nation, community and context.
A respectful explanation can therefore make both points at once: “bison” is the formal scientific term, and “buffalo” remains a legitimate common or cultural term in North America. (National Park Service, Wind Cave National Park; National Park Service, About Bison)
Scientific name, common name and context
Names serve different purposes. A scientific name is intended to identify a species consistently across languages and regions. A common name is shaped by local history and ordinary use. Neither category automatically makes a word more respectful or more useful in every situation.

| Situation | Clearest wording | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scientific writing or a formal report | American bison (Bison bison) | Precise and less likely to be confused with Old World buffalo |
| General North American conversation | Bison or buffalo | Both commonly refer to the same animal in this regional usage |
| Discussing a particular North American form | Plains bison or wood bison | Identifies the form rather than only the species |
| Discussing animals from Africa or Asia | African buffalo or Asian buffalo, with the species name when needed | Makes clear that the animal is not an American bison |
| Writing about Indigenous cultural terminology | Use the community’s own stated term and identify the community | Avoids treating diverse Indigenous preferences as one universal rule |
Bison versus buffalo: the useful comparison
For North American usage, there are not two competing animals to compare. There is one animal with two common labels. The meaningful comparison is between the naming systems:
| Point of comparison | “Bison” | “Buffalo” |
|---|---|---|
| North American referent | Usually the American bison, Bison bison | Usually the same American bison in North American English |
| Scientific precision | Preferred, especially as “American bison” or Bison bison | Less precise because buffalo also names African and Asian animals |
| Cultural and historical use | Common and formal | Long-established common name; may be preferred in some cultural contexts |
| Geographic ambiguity | Lower, although “bison” can refer to more than one species globally | Higher because the word can refer to Old World buffalo |
| Visual cue for the North American animal | Prominent shoulder hump, heavy head and shaggy forequarters | Those same cues apply when “buffalo” is being used for the American bison |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“Buffalo is always wrong.”
That statement ignores established North American usage and the cultural contexts in which “buffalo” is preferred. Say that “bison” is the more precise scientific term instead of declaring the common term invalid.
“All buffalo are bison.”
That reverses the problem. African and Asian buffalo are different animals, and the National Park Service says American bison are not related to them. Add a continent, common species name or scientific name whenever the setting could be international.
“Bison and buffalo are two names for two North American species.”
They are not. Plains bison and wood bison are recognized North American forms within Bison bison; the two everyday words do not divide them into separate species.
Best Value
“The French origin is certain.”
The French-word explanation is reported as a historical belief. Present it as an account of the name’s possible origin, not as settled etymological proof.
“One Indigenous preference applies everywhere.”
Terminology differs among Indigenous nations and communities. Attribute a stated preference to the specific community or source, and do not use one example to speak for all Indigenous peoples.
A quick decision rule
- If you mean the North American animal, write American bison on first mention.
- Use Bison bison when scientific precision or cross-language clarity matters.
- Use bison as the short form in later references or formal writing.
- Use buffalo when reflecting ordinary North American speech, a historical source, a place name or a cultural context where that term is intentionally preferred.
- If the animal is from Africa or Asia, do not assume the North American convention; identify it as an African or Asian buffalo and add a scientific name when necessary.
What to say in one sentence
A concise, accurate explanation is: “In North America, ‘bison’ and ‘buffalo’ commonly refer to the American bison, Bison bison; ‘bison’ is preferred in scientific writing, while African and Asian buffalo are different animals.”
