Biosynthesis Explained: How Cells Build the Molecules They Need

Biosynthesis is the enzyme-driven construction of molecules from simpler precursors. See how pathways use energy, connect to photosynthesis and make both core cellular components and specialized metabolites.

Biosynthesis is how cells use enzymes to build molecules from simpler starting materials. It is the constructive side of metabolism: a linked set of chemical reactions that uses precursors, energy and, where needed, electrons to make substances such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins and DNA or RNA. There is no single biosynthesis pathway; cells connect many pathways to meet different needs.

What biosynthesis means

Metabolism includes both the breakdown of molecules and their construction. Biosynthesis, also called anabolism, describes the enzyme-mediated construction side. In a biosynthetic pathway, an enzyme catalyzes each reaction that transforms a starting compound, or precursor, into an intermediate and then toward a product. The product may be used as a cell component, stored, or serve another role in the organism.

The pathways for carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids are distinct, but they are interconnected: they draw on shared intermediates and feed materials into one another. Biosynthesis therefore describes a broad class of processes, not one universal chemical recipe. NCBI Bookshelf’s chapter “The Biosynthesis of Cell Constituents” reviews these major classes and their pathways.

How enzymes and energy drive construction

Enzymes guide the reaction sequence

Enzymes catalyze specific chemical steps, allowing a cell to build a product through a controlled sequence rather than in one leap. The identity and order of the enzymes determine which intermediates form and which product a pathway can make.

ATP and reducing power supply what reactions need

Building molecules often requires an energy input. ATP can supply energy, while reducing power—commonly carried by NADPH—provides electrons for reactions that need them. As the NCBI Bookshelf chapter puts it: “In contrast, biosynthetic (anabolic) pathways generally involve the use of both ATP and reducing power (usually in the form of NADPH) for the production of new organic compounds.” The precise requirements depend on the pathway; not every step uses both inputs.

How photosynthesis supplies biosynthetic inputs

Plants, algae and cyanobacteria capture light energy and convert it into chemical energy. In photosynthetic carbon fixation, ATP and NADPH support the conversion of carbon dioxide into carbohydrate. These products and intermediates then feed wider metabolism; photosynthesis does not directly produce every molecule an organism needs.

In plants, chloroplast reactions also contribute to the production of fatty acids and some amino acids. Those outputs connect photosynthesis to other biosynthetic pathways rather than replacing them. NCBI Bookshelf’s chapter on chloroplasts describes carbon fixation and biosynthesis in the chloroplast stroma, while OpenStax’s overview of photosynthesis explains how photosynthetic organisms capture light energy in chemical compounds.

Core cellular products and specialized natural products

Some biosynthetic pathways make molecules essential to basic cellular structure and function, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. Other pathways produce specialized metabolites—compounds associated with particular ecological or physiological roles. “Specialized” does not mean unimportant, and the dividing line between primary and specialized metabolism is not absolute. The pathways can share precursors and intermediates.

In plants, major specialized-metabolite pathway groupings include:

  • Acetate–malonate pathways: contribute to fatty-acid derivatives and polyketides.
  • Mevalonate and methylerythritol phosphate pathways: supply routes to terpenoids.
  • Shikimate pathways: contribute to phenols.
  • Amino-acid-derived pathways: contribute to alkaloids.

These categories are useful ways to organize examples, not isolated systems with firm boundaries. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s chapter on plant specialized metabolites notes that exact biochemical boundaries between primary and secondary metabolism have not been established.

What to look for when comparing pathways

To understand how two biosynthetic pathways differ, compare their starting materials and the sequence of enzyme-catalyzed transformations. Then consider what energy or reducing power the reactions require, where the pathway operates and what role the product serves. These questions reveal both the chemical logic of a pathway and how it connects to the organism’s wider metabolism. Details such as cellular location or the role of a particular product depend on the organism and pathway being examined.
