Short answer: BioSolar Leaf is a proposed panel-like cultivation system for microalgae and other photosynthetic organisms. Imperial College London announced funding in April 2019 for an outdoor demonstration at its White City South Site, but the announcement did not establish that a working installation had cleaned London air. It described a planned pilot whose intended outputs included biomass for food ingredients, oxygen and carbon-dioxide uptake.
What BioSolar Leaf is designed to do
Arborea’s BioSolar Leaf uses large, solar-panel-like structures to cultivate microscopic photosynthetic organisms, including microalgae, diatoms and phytoplankton. The structures are intended for installation on land or buildings. In the proposed process, photosynthesis consumes carbon dioxide and releases oxygen while the organisms grow into biomass that can be processed for food ingredients.

That makes BioSolar Leaf cultivation infrastructure, not a plug-in air purifier or a consumer “air-cleaning” gadget. Its environmental and food-production functions are described as intended system outputs in the project material, rather than as results independently measured in London.

What Imperial actually announced in 2019
Imperial College London said on 29 April 2019 that it would fund development of an outdoor BioSolar Leaf pilot at the White City Campus South Site. The stated goals were to demonstrate the system in real-world conditions and support local outreach. The Imperial announcement is evidence of a planned demonstration, not confirmation that the pilot was completed, is still operating, or achieved a measured reduction in London pollution.

Imperial quoted Associate Provost Neil Alford describing air pollution as one of London’s urgent challenges. Arborea founder and CEO Julian Melchiorri described the intended pilot as producing food additives while purifying air, generating oxygen and removing carbon dioxide. Those quotations explain the project’s aims; they are not independent performance evaluations.
Where the “100 trees” claim fits
The Imperial announcement attributed to Arborea’s team a comparison that one tree-sized area of the system could remove carbon dioxide and produce oxygen at a rate equivalent to 100 trees. This is a developer claim reported by Imperial, not an independently established field measurement. It should not be read as proof that the London campus installation delivered the same result, or that it removed health-relevant pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide or particulate matter at a specified rate.

Air pollution is not the same as carbon dioxide
BioSolar Leaf’s proposed mechanism is photosynthetic carbon-dioxide uptake. That is different from demonstrating removal of the pollutants that drive urban health concerns. A credible air-quality result would need to identify the pollutant, report a measured removal rate, and show performance under defined weather, airflow and operating conditions.
The available project records do not provide those London measurements. They also do not establish how a pilot’s footprint, maintenance, harvesting schedule or local wind conditions would affect ambient concentrations around the campus.

The food-production strand is central, not incidental
BioSolar Leaf was also developed as a way to produce microalgae-derived food ingredients. The European Commission’s H2020 BioSolar Leaf project record describes feasibility work and intended validation with food producers. A later Horizon Europe project record lists ArboreaBioFoods LDA as coordinator and describes a 2022–2023 objective to develop a large-scale microalgae bioreactor and move toward scale-up for food ingredients and protein commodities.
The later record lists an EU contribution of €2,348,873 and climate-action tracking of 40 percent. Those are project-funding and accounting figures, not measurements of air-pollution removal or evidence that the White City pilot reached commercial deployment.

Why green-roof research cannot validate this system
A peer-reviewed study of adjacent green-roofed and conventional buildings in Sydney describes the broader evidence on vegetation and urban air pollution as limited and variable. It notes that translating leaf-scale measurements or models into changes in surrounding air is difficult, with outcomes affected by plant choice, weather and urban form. The study’s estimates for other green-roof settings are context, not BioSolar Leaf measurements or London results. See the published green-roof air-pollution study.

- Pollutant and metric: concentrations and removal rates for named pollutants, rather than a general claim about “pollution.”
- Baseline and control: measurements before operation and comparison locations or periods without the system.
- Operating conditions: organism mix, panel area, airflow, sunlight, temperature, harvesting and maintenance.
- Independent methods: instruments, sampling duration, uncertainty and results that another team can examine.
- Net effects: energy, water, nutrient and processing requirements alongside any carbon or air-quality benefit.
Without those details, a demonstration can show that the cultivation system operates, but it cannot establish how much cleaner the surrounding air becomes.

How to compare BioSolar Leaf with other urban interventions
The cited records do not provide enough BioSolar Leaf data to rank it against traffic controls, filtration, conventional vegetation or other interventions. A fair comparison would use the same axes for every option:
- the specific pollutant measured;
- field-measured versus modelled performance;
- removal rate and measurement uncertainty;
- land or building footprint and operating requirements; and
- whether the claim concerns greenhouse gases, local pollutants or both.
A household air purifier, algae supplement or ordinary plant would not be a valid substitute for this institutional cultivation system, and no consumer product is established by the project records.
Bottom line on the London headline
“BioSolar Leaf will pull pollution from London air” overstates what the 2019 announcement established. The announcement covered a planned outdoor pilot designed to test microalgae cultivation with potential food and environmental co-benefits. Until a publicly documented, independent field evaluation reports what pollutants were measured and what changed at the White City site, the system’s air-cleaning performance in London remains unproven.
