Choose based on your routine: prioritize strong measured battery runtime if you often run out of charge before you can plug in; prioritize fast charging if you regularly have an outlet but only brief opportunities to use it. Neither a large mAh figure nor a high advertised wattage tells you, by itself, how long a phone will last or how convenient it will be. Compare runtime and charge times measured under clear, similar conditions.
Which matters more for your routine?

This is a practical recommendation, not a universal technical rule: your screen time, signal conditions, apps, and access to power all affect which trade-off feels more important.

Why mAh does not tell you how many hours a phone lasts
Battery capacity contributes to runtime, but the phone’s power draw matters too. The European Commission explains that a lower-power device can achieve the same battery life with a smaller battery than a higher-power device. That means mAh is not a direct conversion to hours, nor a complete measure of battery performance. European Commission impact assessment

Capacity figures also need context: manufacturers may describe them as typical or rated, and figures are not always directly comparable across brands. A larger capacity can be a helpful clue, but use it alongside observed runtime for the model you are considering.

What fast-charging claims do—and do not—tell you
Fast charging reduces the time a phone needs to stay connected to power, but an advertised wattage is not a promise that the phone will draw that much power. The handset must support the charger’s protocol, and charging speed can change with temperature, battery age, and whether the phone is in use. Google notes these conditions for Pixel devices; Nothing likewise says charger protocol and temperature affect charging speed. Google Support · Nothing Support
For a model-specific example, Nothing Support lists a 5,000 mAh battery and approximately one hour to a full charge with the official Nothing charger. That is a manufacturer figure for the specified phone, not a universal expectation; Nothing says results vary with temperature and charger protocol. Its guidance recommends PPS for that phone, which should not be read as a requirement or best choice for every handset.

Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy S26 specifications offer another example of why conditions matter: Samsung says the S26 has a 4,300 mAh battery and can reach up to 55% in around 30 minutes with a 25 W adapter; the S26+ is listed at 4,900 mAh and up to 69% in around 30 minutes with a 45 W adapter. Samsung says the adapters are sold separately and that its test began at 0% with the screen and services off; actual charging varies with usage and conditions. How to compare phones fairly
Look for measured runtime and elapsed charging time, not just battery capacity and maximum watts. Independent results are useful only when you understand the test method and whether it resembles your needs. PhoneArena, for example, reports a battery test profile using 200 nits fixed brightness and Wi-Fi only; its charging test starts at 1% with the phone powered on. - Runtime: Check the test profile, including brightness, network, workload, and device state where reported.
- Charge time: Compare elapsed time to useful levels—such as 30 minutes—not only time to 100%. Check the starting charge, whether the phone was powered on, and what charger and cable were used.
- Compatibility: Confirm the exact model’s supported charging standard and the manufacturer’s charger guidance. A charger’s wattage alone does not establish how quickly that phone will charge.
- Conditions: Note temperature, phone use during charging, and other conditions when reported; they can affect results.
- Model and region: Make sure the tested or specified variant matches the one sold where you live. Test methods, hardware generations, and regional configurations can differ.
Google’s Pixel support information gives model-specific profiles and warns that actual charging may be slower, while PhoneArena’s table reflects its own test methods and firmware. Samsung’s figures are manufacturer results. Treat each as evidence about the stated model and conditions, not as a universal ranking across phones.

Apple defines “battery life” as how long a device runs before it needs recharging, and distinguishes it from battery lifespan—the time a battery lasts before it needs replacement. Apple also explains that chemically aged lithium-ion batteries hold less charge. A phone that lasts a long time when new is not thereby proven to retain capacity longer over years. Apple Support

The available sources do not establish a universal, cross-model estimate of how much fast charging changes long-term battery degradation compared with slower charging. Avoid assuming either that fast charging inevitably damages a phone or that charging speed has no effect in any circumstance; temperature, aging, and device management are relevant, but the cited material does not quantify a general penalty.

A simple buying decision
- Start with your constraint. If you cannot plug in reliably, look first for strong measured runtime. If you can plug in but have short charging windows, examine charge times to useful levels.
- Check the exact phone’s evidence. Compare test profiles and conditions, not just headline mAh or watts.
- Verify the charging setup. Confirm supported protocol and compatible charger; manufacturer guidance for one model does not automatically apply to another.
- Consider longevity separately. New-phone runtime and fast-charge convenience do not establish how long the battery will retain capacity.
