BeyondTrust says hackers breached Remote Support SaaS instances

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BeyondTrust has stated that attackers breached Remote Support SaaS instances. Incidents like this are especially high-risk because remote support products can provide privileged access, session recording, and the ability to execute actions on customer or internal machines.

What matters next is fast validation: determine whether any of your users, devices, or admin actions were impacted, preserve the right evidence, then tighten authentication and access while you remediate. The steps below are written to be actionable for security teams and IT operations.

What BeyondTrust reported (and why it matters)

When a Remote Support SaaS provider reports an intrusion into its hosted service, your exposure depends on what the attacker could reach and what data or functionality was accessible. Even if you did not deploy anything yourself, your organization still “inherits” risk from how identity, sessions, customer instances, and integrations are managed in the SaaS model.

In practice, the highest concerns are unauthorized remote sessions, credential theft, tampering with session authorization flows, and misuse of management integrations (for example, service accounts that connect to directories, ticketing systems, or endpoints).

Scope you should validate immediately

Before you change anything major, you want a clean picture of what could be impacted. Treat this as a scoping sprint for the first 24–72 hours.

  • Which BeyondTrust Remote Support environments you use (production vs. non-production, multiple tenants, regions).
  • Which authentication methods you rely on (native accounts vs. SSO via SAML/OIDC, MFA strength, fallback flows).
  • How remote access is authorized (attendant vs. unattended, approval workflows, who can initiate sessions).
  • Any integrations to your identity provider, SIEM, ticketing, endpoint management, or automation pipelines.
  • Recent access patterns (new admin users, unusual logins, new devices contacting your environment).

Incident response checklist for BeyondTrust Remote Support SaaS

Use this checklist to structure response work. It’s designed for parallel execution: preserve evidence while you rotate credentials and start hunting.

1) Confirm the affected environment

Identify the exact BeyondTrust Remote Support SaaS tenant(s) involved in your usage. Then compare your tenant identifiers and account configuration against the provider’s published indicators (service status pages, advisories, and customer communications).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record tenant URL(s), admin account names, and all configured SSO/identity connections.
  2. Verify whether any of your users were granted administrative roles recently (within the last 30–90 days).
  3. List all remote support operators (help desk, IT, MSP staff, contractors) and their permission level.

2) Preserve evidence

Once you suspect compromise, avoid deleting logs or disabling forensic visibility. Your goal is to retain enough context to connect sessions, identities, and endpoints.

  1. Export relevant BeyondTrust audit logs (auth events, admin actions, session start/stop, approvals).
  2. Export identity provider logs (sign-in events, token issuance, MFA events, admin role changes).
  3. Export endpoint/network logs for the lookback window you choose (commonly 30–90 days depending on risk tolerance).
  4. Document the timeline: first suspicious event, your detection time, and any containment actions you took.

3) Rotate high-risk credentials and secrets

Credential rotation is not one size fits all. Rotate anything that could reasonably be used for remote access, session initiation, or privilege escalation.

  1. Rotate admin and operator credentials (including any accounts used for unattended support).
  2. Rotate SSO-related secrets used in your environment (if applicable to your configuration, such as client secrets or signing keys).
  3. Rotate service account credentials for integrations (ticketing, directory sync, automation, webhook signing keys).
  4. Re-issue or invalidate long-lived tokens and API keys.

If you use a hardware-backed MFA or passkeys where supported, prefer those for admin accounts. If you only have SMS-based MFA for some users, disable SMS for admins immediately and require stronger factors.

4) Hunt for indicators of compromise

Hunting should combine identity anomalies, admin changes, and session behavior. Focus on changes that occurred around the suspected time window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search for logins from unusual geographies, impossible travel, or new device/browser fingerprints.
  2. Identify new users added to operator/admin roles.
  3. Look for changes to authorization policies and permission groups.
  4. Flag sessions initiated by unexpected accounts, or sessions that were approved unusually fast or without typical workflows.

5) Lock down access paths

While you investigate, reduce the ability for an attacker to continue using remote support features.

  1. Temporarily restrict remote session initiation to a smaller set of trusted operators.
  2. Disable or limit unattended access while you validate endpoint integrity.
  3. Require MFA for all operator actions, not just login.
  4. Review and tighten “who can approve” rules for remote requests.

6) Review remote session activity and approvals

Remote support sessions are the practical place to find misuse. Correlate session metadata with identities and endpoints.

  1. Pull a report of all sessions for the lookback period.
  2. Prioritize sessions initiated by new or rarely used accounts.
  3. Compare typical access patterns (day/time, operator, customer/host) to what happened during the suspected intrusion window.
  4. For any session involving privileged actions, classify affected endpoints for deeper investigation.

7) Patch and harden supporting systems

Even if the provider was breached, your systems might still be exposed if attackers reached endpoints or accounts via remote sessions.

How to check for compromise in logs (what to look for)

Below are concrete log signals to hunt. Different organizations name fields differently, but the behaviors are consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BeyondTrust-side signals

  • Admin and operator role changes: new assignments, permission edits, role transfers.
  • Authentication events: successful logins, failed logins, MFA challenges, token refreshes.
  • Session lifecycle: session created, session approved, session started, session ended, session recordings processed.
  • Policy and configuration changes: changes to access rules, approval settings, unattended configuration.

Identity and sign-in signals

  • Sign-in anomalies: logins from unexpected IP ranges or new devices.
  • MFA irregularities: missing MFA where required, repeated MFA challenges, MFA method changes.
  • Admin activity: creation of new admin users, changes to OAuth/SAML app permissions, consent grants.

Endpoint and network signals

  • Unexpected process execution that aligns with remote sessions (new remote tooling processes, command execution bursts).
  • Suspicious outbound traffic from endpoints shortly after session start.
  • New persistence mechanisms: scheduled tasks, startup items, service installs, unusual registry run keys.

Containing the blast radius if you suspect active misuse

If you find evidence of unauthorized access or tampering, contain before you perfect your investigation. Prioritize prevention of further remote sessions and privilege escalation.

  1. Disable affected operator accounts immediately, starting with any that show anomalous session activity.
  2. Disable unattended access and pause any automation that can initiate sessions or actions.
  3. Revoke tokens and API keys used by integrations or administrators.
  4. Quarantine impacted endpoints for forensic triage if you have endpoint management workflows.
  5. Communicate internally so IT/help desk operators know which accounts and workflows are temporarily blocked.

Recovery and post-incident hardening

Once you’ve contained the issue and verified no further misuse is occurring, rebuild trust through hardening and process changes.

  • Enforce strong authentication for all admin/operator roles and require phishing-resistant MFA where possible.
  • Use least privilege: separate operator roles from admin roles; restrict who can approve unattended access.
  • Improve monitoring: ensure SIEM alerts for role changes, mass session creation, and unusual geolocation sign-ins.
  • Strengthen session governance: require explicit approvals for sensitive operations and log admin actions with high fidelity.
  • Practice incident drills: remote support is a common access path; rehearse how you disable it and preserve logs.

Also coordinate with your service provider on any additional mitigations they recommend (configuration changes, tenant-level actions, or forced resets).

Common mistakes teams make during Remote Support incidents

  • Relying on login success alone: attackers can succeed while doing subtle actions; always review admin actions and session approvals.
  • Rotating only user passwords: API keys, OAuth clients, integration secrets, and signing keys often remain valid longer than expected.
  • Disabling logs too early: containment that removes visibility can destroy your ability to prove scope and identify all affected endpoints.
  • Forgetting non-admin operators: help desk accounts can still initiate sessions that expose credentials on endpoints.
  • Ignoring approval workflow anomalies: approvals are where authorization breaks down; fast or patterned approvals are a strong indicator.

Troubleshooting when the main containment path fails

Sometimes you can’t immediately disable everything (workflow dependencies, emergency access needs, limited admin availability). If containment stalls, use a structured fallback plan.

If you can’t clearly identify the affected accounts

Pivot on behavior instead of identity. Rank accounts by session volume, newness, and correlation with privileged actions.

  1. Export last 30–90 days of session activity sorted by initiation time.
  2. Filter for sessions initiated by accounts with new device fingerprints or unusual IP ranges.
  3. Review “operator” and “approver” pairs for mismatches in typical workflows.

If integration tokens keep working after rotation

Some systems cache sessions or maintain refresh tokens. Treat it as a token lifecycle issue.

  1. Confirm you revoked the right token type (API key vs. OAuth refresh token vs. session cookie).
  2. Invalidate provider-side sessions for the integration accounts if supported.
  3. Check for multiple integration instances using the same credential material.

If endpoint artifacts aren’t showing up in your EDR

Remote session activity might not map cleanly to your EDR detections. Expand the hunt to process ancestry and command-line patterns during session windows.

  1. Correlate session start/stop times to endpoint process creation timelines.
  2. Search for command-line invocations that create persistence or download executables.
  3. Run targeted triage scans on endpoints that had privileged actions during suspicious sessions.

Alternatives and compensating controls while you remediate

During active investigation, you may need temporary ways to provide support without the same risk exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use local or call-based triage for non-admin tasks and restrict any remote actions to a minimal set.
  • Require just-in-time access for privileged operations and time-box admin sessions.
  • Move high-sensitivity operations offline until endpoints are verified.
  • Harden change windows: restrict configuration changes to scheduled maintenance windows with approvals.

FAQs

Does a BeyondTrust Remote Support SaaS breach automatically mean our systems were compromised?

No. SaaS intrusions can range from exposure of configuration or limited data to direct misuse of customer functionality. Your logs and session history are what determine whether you were affected.

What lookback window should we use for hunting?

Most teams start with 30–90 days for identity and session history, then narrow based on the provider’s advisory timeline. If you have strong telemetry retention and high operational risk, longer windows can be justified.

Should we notify customers or internal leadership?

If you find evidence of unauthorized access to customer systems, or if regulated data could be impacted, notification obligations may apply. Coordinate with legal and compliance once you confirm scope.

What’s the fastest path to reduce risk while investigations continue?

Restrict operator permissions, disable unattended access, require strong MFA for all operator actions, and revoke any high-risk tokens or keys used for integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do we handle contractors or MSP operators?

Review operator accounts used by external teams, reduce their privileges during the incident window, and verify their session activity against normal support patterns. Rotate any shared credentials or integration secrets they could access.

Bottom Line

A reported breach of BeyondTrust Remote Support SaaS instances is serious because remote support can translate quickly into privileged access. Your priority is to validate scope using session and identity logs, preserve evidence, and restrict or disable risky access paths while credentials and tokens are rotated.

Once you confirm what happened, harden remote support governance—least privilege, stronger MFA, stricter approval workflows, and alerting tied to session behaviors—so the next incident is slower and easier to contain.
