Its all-caps-as-yelling metaphor also offers a useful way to think about tone in developer communication—but the exercise teaches a string transformation, not a proven empathy technique.
What CS50P’s Indoor Voice problem asks you to do
“Indoor Voice” appears in CS50’s Python course, CS50P, as part of Problem Set 0. The assignment asks the learner to write indoor.py, get a line of input, and output that same text in lowercase. Punctuation and whitespace should not change. The instructions allow an explicit prompt or passing a prompt string to Python’s input function, and point learners toward input and string methods as hints. See CS50P’s Indoor Voice specification.

For example, the expected transformation turns HELLO into hello, THIS IS CS50 into this is cs50, and 50 into 50. The task is deliberately small: change letter case, not the message’s other characters.

The page opens with the sentence “WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS LIKE YELLING.” It then recommends writing entirely in lowercase as an “indoor voice.” That language gives the programming exercise its framing; it is not presented as a scientific claim about how people interpret messages.

Why the casing metaphor connects to developer communication
In software work, a message has both content and delivery. A developer may need to explain a bug, request a change, or tell a user that a feature behaves differently than expected. The Indoor Voice prompt makes tone easy to notice: the same words can be framed as shouting or as quieter speech. That makes it a handy analogy for asking how a message might land with its reader.
For instance, consider a hypothetical code-review note: “THIS IS WRONG. FIX IT.” Rephrasing it as “This branch misses the null case; could you handle that before merging?” changes the apparent tone and adds a specific explanation and request. This is an illustration, not an outcome measured by CS50P or evidence that changing capitalization alone creates empathy. The comparison is useful precisely because it prompts separate questions: what tone does the note convey, how might the recipient perceive it, and does it preserve a clear account of the issue?

What software-engineering research says about empathy
Empathy is discussed in software-engineering research in the context of understanding users, developers, and other stakeholders. The research below examines the topic through different methods; none tests whether completing Indoor Voice changes a learner’s empathy or communication habits.
Developer and end-user relationships
A 2024 mixed-methods case study by Hashini Gunatilake, John Grundy, Rashina Hoda, and Ingo Mueller examined empathy between software developers and end users. The authors considered factors that enable or impede empathy and possible strategies for addressing barriers. Read the 2024 case study.
Interviews with developers and stakeholders
A 2026 socio-technical grounded-theory study by Gunatilake, Grundy, Hoda, and Mueller used in-depth semi-structured interviews with 22 software developers and stakeholders interviewed — Monash University research record, 2026. That number is the study’s interview sample, not an estimate of developers generally. The work considers empathy in software engineering more broadly; it does not measure the effect of a classroom string exercise. Read the Monash University research record.

Practitioner writing and expert perspectives
A separate 2026 article in ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology, by Lidiany Cerqueira and co-authors, analyzed 55 web articles analyzed — ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology authors, 2026. The articles came from DEV and Medium; the researchers also conducted a follow-up survey with empathy experts. Its abstract discusses barriers including toxic culture and excessive technical focus, alongside practices and outcomes related to collaboration, communication, and well-being. The 55 articles describe the study corpus, not a population-wide statistic. Read the ACM article.

A 2023 paper on empathy models in software engineering describes the area as under-researched and argues that existing models need consideration for their suitability and adaptation to software engineering. That is a reason to avoid turning the metaphor into a universal rule: considerate communication is a worthwhile goal, but these sources do not establish a single formula or quantify the effect of casing. Indoor Voice can make a narrow technical lesson memorable: transform letters to lowercase without altering punctuation or whitespace. Its all-caps and “indoor voice” wording also gives teachers and learners a natural opening to discuss how communication sounds to another person. That second use is an interpretation of the framing, not a stated learning objective or tested result of the assignment.
Keeping that boundary clear matters. The empathy studies examine broader developer–user and developer–stakeholder relationships, using case-study, interview, and article-analysis methods. They offer context for why empathy is discussed in software engineering, but they do not show that this particular CS50P problem improves it. Treat the analogy as a prompt for reflection: communicate clearly, consider how tone may be received, and do not mistake a change in capitalization for proof of understanding.
