Passkeys are account-linked cryptographic credentials that let you sign in by approving a prompt on a phone, computer, or security key—often with a fingerprint, face scan, PIN, or pattern. They are designed to resist phishing, but how you store, sync, and recover them depends on the credential provider and the service. Before relying on a passkey, know where it lives and how you would regain access if a device is lost.
What is a passkey?
A passkey is a FIDO cryptographic credential associated with your account at a website or app. It can be stored by a phone or computer, managed by a credential provider, or held in a physical security key. When you sign in, the service asks an authenticator to use the credential, and you approve locally—often with biometrics or your device’s PIN or pattern.

Your fingerprint, face scan, or PIN is not sent to the website as the passkey. It authorizes local use of the credential. The service maintains the account association; the authenticator or credential provider manages the user-side credential. “Passkey” is a cross-platform term, not the name of one company’s proprietary feature. FIDO Alliance’s passkey overview explains the standard and the sign-in flow.
Why are passkeys gaining traction?
FIDO Alliance’s The State of Passkeys 2026: Global Consumer and Workforce Report, published May 7, 2026, found that 75% of surveyed consumers had enabled a passkey on at least one account, and 49% used passkeys regularly when available. The consumer survey was conducted online in April 2026 by Sapio Research among 11,000 adults who regularly sign in to websites, apps, or online services in 10 countries: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, China, and India. FIDO reports a margin of error of ±0.9 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. Read the report and its survey details.

FIDO also estimated that 5 billion passkeys were in active use worldwide in 2026. That is a separate estimate combining publicly available information with FIDO’s internal deployment data, not a number derived directly from the consumer survey. In the workforce survey, 68% of surveyed organizations said they were deploying, piloting, or rolling out passkeys for employee sign-ins. That survey covered 1,400 decision-makers involved in employee sign-in, authentication, or passkey deployment at organizations with 500 or more employees across the same 10 countries; FIDO reports a margin of error of ±2.6 percentage points. FIDO’s 2026 report also found 90% of surveyed consumers were familiar with passkeys.
Are passkeys safer than passwords?
Passkeys use public-key cryptography in an authentication flow tied to the service’s origin. FIDO describes them as designed to resist phishing: the credential is intended for the legitimate site or app, rather than being a reusable secret that a user can be tricked into typing into a lookalike page. That reduces an important risk, but it does not make an account impossible to compromise.
Security also depends on what happens around the passkey. A service may leave passwords or other sign-in methods enabled, and recovery methods can differ in strength. FIDO’s 2026 workforce survey found that 57% of organizations that had deployed passkeys still relied on phishable methods for primary day-to-day sign-in. Passkey availability, therefore, does not necessarily mean passwords have disappeared from an organization’s sign-in process. FIDO’s report provides the deployment context.

For your own account, consider the full path: which provider stores the credential, which devices can use it, how access is restored after loss, and what alternative sign-in methods remain active. A strong passkey is only one part of that picture. FIDO’s passkey guidance describes the credential and recovery considerations.
Where can you store a passkey?
There are three broad choices. FIDO names iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager as built-in credential-manager examples, and 1Password and Dashlane as third-party provider examples. These are examples, not endorsements; exact features, plan terms, device support, and recovery options can vary and change.
| Storage choice | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Platform credential manager | A device ecosystem’s manager stores or syncs credentials across compatible devices. | Whether your devices and the service work with the manager, how syncing works, and how the provider restores access. |
| Third-party passkey provider | A separate provider manages credentials for use across supported devices or environments. | Compatibility with your devices and services, portability, and recovery if you lose access to the provider account. |
| Physical FIDO security key | A key holds a device-bound credential and is used when signing in with the key. | Whether the particular service accepts it, and whether you can securely keep and manage a backup key. |
These are decision categories, not a complete provider-by-provider feature comparison. FIDO identifies compatibility, sync and portability, recovery, and physical backup as the main dimensions to assess. FIDO’s guidance describes storage options and security keys.

What happens if you lose your phone?
The answer depends on where the passkey is stored and what recovery options the provider and service support. A synced passkey may be available on another device through the same provider, but that is not a universal guarantee. Consider separately the loss of one device, loss of the provider account, and loss of access to every device that holds synced credentials.

Apple describes a provider-specific option: passkeys stored through iCloud Keychain can be recovered through iCloud Keychain escrow. Apple says this escrow is protected against brute-force attacks, even by Apple. That is Apple’s description of its own recovery system, not a general property or guarantee of every passkey provider. In FIDO’s 2026 workforce survey, 89% of surveyed organizations said they were confident they could restore access when passkeys were lost. That figure measures respondents’ confidence, not independent verification that every organization’s recovery process works. See the survey context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use a passkey on another device?
Sometimes. If the credential provider syncs the passkey to your other devices and those devices and the service support the required flow, you may be able to use it there. A device-bound credential, including one held on a physical key, works differently. Compatibility depends on the service, provider, browser, device, and software version; there is no single live compatibility matrix that applies to every combination.
Before setting up a passkey, check the service’s current documentation and identify which provider will save it. Confirm whether it syncs to the devices you actually use and how you would sign in if your main device were unavailable. Do not remove other sign-in methods until you understand the service’s recovery process.

Should you use a passkey or a security key?
They are not always competing choices. A passkey may be stored in a synced credential manager for convenient use across compatible devices, while a physical FIDO security key can provide a device-bound credential and may serve as an additional recovery option. Whether that backup is useful depends on the service’s support and your ability to keep the key accessible and secure.
- Prioritize ecosystem compatibility: Check that your devices and the account’s sign-in flow work with the provider you intend to use.
- Understand sync and portability: Find out whether the credential follows you across devices or remains tied to one device or key.
- Plan recovery: Review what happens if a device, provider account, or all synced devices become inaccessible.
- Consider a physical backup: For important accounts, check whether a FIDO security key is accepted and whether managing a physical backup suits you.
These choices are specific to your provider and each service. Follow the service’s current instructions for enrollment and recovery rather than assuming that one setup works everywhere. FIDO’s passkey information covers the storage and security-key options.
Quick Recap
A short checklist before you switch
- Check that the service and your devices currently support the passkey sign-in flow you want to use.
- Identify the credential provider that will save the passkey and whether it syncs to your other devices.
- Read the service’s recovery instructions before removing other sign-in methods or depending on one device.
- For an important account, consider adding a security key if the service supports it and you can manage a physical backup.
- Keep the roles straight: the service associates the credential with your account, the provider or authenticator manages the credential on your side, and your device unlock method authorizes its local use.
