To host Beyond Depth-Ver13.0.1, use Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.22 and Java 17. Install Forge in server mode, copy the client instance’s config, kubejs, defaultconfigs, and mods folders into the server directory, remove the client-only mods named by the pack author, then start run.bat. The pack’s author permits server hosting, but redistribution, modification, and re-uploading require explicit permission.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
This guide follows the author’s current workflow for the release uploaded October 11, 2026. It also explains which settings are safe to change, what the official instructions do not specify, and when self-hosting or managed hosting is the better choice.

What you need before installing
Beyond Depth is a large exploration-focused Forge pack for Minecraft 1.20.1. The project describes itself as an exploration modpack with more than 400 mods, more than 35 high-quality bosses, more than 300 new mobs, and more than 500 new structures. Those figures describe the published pack scale, not a guaranteed player capacity for a server.
Use the matching release
- Pack: Beyond Depth-Ver13.0.1
- Minecraft: 1.20.1
- Mod loader: Forge
- Forge installer: 47.4.22
- Java: Java 17
Do not mix files from another Beyond Depth version with this installation. A different pack build can contain different dependencies, scripts, configuration keys, or client/server separation. The official project page also advises against updating individual mods or adding OptiFine.

Client memory guidance
The author recommends allocating 8 GB of memory to the client and lists 4 GB as the minimum. These figures are for launching and playing the client; they are not a published server-memory requirement. No official player-capacity, benchmark, or server-RAM figure is provided, so choose server memory based on your operating system, world size, concurrent players, and observed tick performance rather than treating the client recommendation as a server specification.
Files and access
- A working Beyond Depth client instance, preferably installed through the same pack distribution used by your players.
- Permission to create and modify a server directory on the host computer.
- Java 17 installed and available to the account that will run the server.
- Enough free storage for the Forge installation, copied mods, generated world, logs, backups, and future updates.
- Administrative access to your router if players outside your home network will connect.
How the official server workflow fits together
The client instance is the source of the pack’s scripts, configurations, and mod files. Forge supplies the server loader. The server copy must contain the pack’s shared content but not the visual, menu, HUD, or other client-only additions that cannot run on a dedicated server. After the files are copied and the exclusions are made, server.properties controls basic server behavior and run.bat launches the instance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Install Java 17.
- Download and run the Forge 47.4.22 installer for Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Select Install server and choose a new, empty server directory.
- Copy the four pack directories from the working client.
- Remove every client-only mod listed in the next section.
- Set the required server properties and matching ServerCore options.
- Start the server with
run.bat, accept the EULA when prompted, and test a local connection before inviting others.
Step 1: Install Java 17 and Forge
Install the required Java version
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the machine that will host the server. Verify that the Java installation used by the server is actually version 17; having another Java version installed does not guarantee that Forge will select the right one. If your operating system has multiple Java installations, configure the launcher or batch file so it resolves to Java 17 rather than relying on an unknown system default.
Install Forge as a server
- Download the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1, build 47.4.22.
- Open the installer and choose Install server, not Install client.
- Select a dedicated, preferably empty folder for the server. Avoid placing the server inside the client’s installation directory; keeping the two instances separate makes backups and troubleshooting safer.
- Allow the installer to create the Forge libraries, launcher files, and startup scripts.
The first launch may stop before the server is fully running while it creates files or asks you to accept Minecraft’s EULA. Read the generated log and follow the EULA prompt in the server directory before treating an early exit as a Forge failure.
Step 2: Copy the Beyond Depth files
Close the client before copying files so that configuration files and scripts are not changing during the transfer. From the working Beyond Depth client instance, copy these directories into the Forge server directory:
configkubejsdefaultconfigsmods
Merge or replace files only when the destination is the new server installation. Do not copy the client’s entire game directory indiscriminately: saves, screenshots, launcher metadata, resource packs, shader files, and other client state are not part of the author’s server procedure. If a destination folder already contains files from an earlier pack version, stop and decide whether it is a clean installation or an intentional upgrade; mixing old and new configuration is a common cause of startup errors.
Step 3: Remove client-only mods
The author’s server instructions identify the following files as client-only and instruct you to remove them from the server’s mods folder. Names can include Forge suffixes exactly as shown below, so compare the installed filenames rather than deleting a similarly named server mod by guesswork.

The author notes that rare problems may require adding a mod to the server side. Treat that as a troubleshooting exception, not a reason to copy every client file back. If the server log identifies a missing required dependency, compare the exact mod ID and version with the client, add only the dependency the error requires, and restart. Keep a record of any deviation so every player and future backup uses the same known-good set.
Step 4: Configure server.properties and ServerCore
Enable flight only when you need it
If your group uses a mod or gameplay feature that requires flight, enable the flight option in server.properties. The setting is a server-side permission and does not install a flying mechanic by itself. If you do not need it, leave the default policy in place and let the relevant mod define its own behavior.
Set the server tick-time value
The author instructs administrators to set the server tick time to -1 in server.properties. Edit the existing key rather than adding a duplicate line. Stop the server before editing, save the file as plain text, and restart so Forge reads the new value.

- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Keep render-distance settings synchronized
When changing render distance, change it in both places: the corresponding value in server.properties and the render-distance setting in the ServerCore configuration file. Changing only one can leave the server and optimization layer applying different limits, producing confusing results such as a value that appears to be ignored. Make one change at a time and test with the same client settings so you can identify whether a problem comes from the server limit, ServerCore, or local rendering.
Step 5: Start and verify the server
- Open the server folder and run
run.bat. - Watch the console for Forge and mod-loading errors. A successful startup should remain running rather than returning immediately to the command prompt.
- If prompted, accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated EULA file, then start
run.batagain. - Wait until the console reports that the server is ready before connecting.
- From the same computer, connect with the local address shown by your operating system or use the server list entry appropriate for a local test.
- Join, move through a newly generated area, open a few modded interfaces, and confirm that quests, FTB Teams, and scripts load as expected.
- Stop the server with the console’s normal stop command rather than closing the window, then make a backup of the working directory.
A local test separates pack errors from networking errors. If the server cannot start locally, port forwarding will not fix it; inspect the first meaningful error in the log and correct the missing dependency, Java selection, file placement, or configuration before exposing the port.
Let friends connect from outside your network
The official Beyond Depth instructions do not provide a platform-specific port-forwarding walkthrough. The exact screens differ by router and internet provider, so use your router’s documentation for the required Minecraft server port, forward it to the computer’s local address, and confirm that the host firewall allows Java and the server process. Give friends your public address only after local testing and only if you understand the security implications.
Practical network checklist
- Reserve a stable local IP address for the server computer, or create a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Forward the Minecraft server port to that address, not to a changing laptop address.
- Allow the Java runtime and server executable through the host firewall on the intended network profile.
- Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, because a test from inside the same LAN may succeed even when public forwarding is wrong.
- Do not publish the server console, remote-management ports, or router administration interface to the internet.
- Back up the world before changing router rules or moving the server to another machine.
If your internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work even when the router appears correctly configured. In that case, ask your provider about a public address or use a managed host rather than repeatedly changing local settings.

Client settings and multiplayer compatibility
Beyond Depth includes multiplayer-oriented content such as FTB Teams and quests. Every player should use the same Beyond Depth release and matching mod files. Do not update individual mods simply because a newer file exists; the pack’s scripts and configurations may depend on the versions shipped together.

CurseForge launcher options
The author says to disable the CurseForge option labeled Skip Mojang Launcher, because leaving it enabled causes issues. Apply that change to each player’s launcher profile before troubleshooting server connectivity.
Mac-specific note
Mac users are instructed to remove Spark from the client. This is a client adjustment and does not replace the server-side removal list. Players on other operating systems should not assume that every client-only adjustment applies to them.
Performance adjustments on the client
If a player struggles to maintain performance, lower render distance first. The author also recommends disabling Fresh Animations together with its extensions when performance is poor. These are client-side changes; they do not alter the server’s simulation workload or substitute for the synchronized server and ServerCore render-distance settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosting versus managed hosting
You can host Beyond Depth yourself. The author’s license explicitly states, “You may use this modpack to host a server.” Self-hosting avoids a recurring hosting bill and gives you direct access to files, Java, Forge, logs, backups, and configuration. It also makes you responsible for uptime, networking, security, storage, upgrades, and recovery.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted machine | Managed Forge host |
|---|---|---|
| Installation effort | Install Java and Forge, copy the pack directories, remove client files, and maintain the instance yourself. | The provider may offer a modpack installer or support-assisted setup; confirm that it supports this exact release. |
| File and version control | Full control over Java 17, Forge 47.4.22, scripts, configs, logs, and backups. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and policies; verify that custom Forge builds and file access are allowed. |
| Networking | You handle router forwarding, firewall rules, public addressing, and local outages. | The provider supplies a public endpoint, while you still configure the game and whitelist players. |
| Backups | You must schedule, test, and store backups separately from the live world. | Automatic backups may be available, but retention, restore speed, and download access must be confirmed. |
| Memory and hardware | You choose the machine and can upgrade it, but the hardware is your responsibility. | You select an advertised plan; confirm usable memory, CPU allocation, storage, and the provider’s policy for large modpacks. |
| Geographic latency | Latency depends on your home connection and the host’s location. | You can usually choose a region, but check the actual location and routing for your players. |
| Updates | You control when to back up and apply a pack update. | One-click updates can be convenient, but confirm that they do not update individual mods independently. |
| Support | You diagnose logs, Java, Forge, scripts, and networking yourself. | Support quality varies; ask whether staff will troubleshoot Beyond Depth-Ver13.0.1 rather than only generic Minecraft servers. |
| Price | No hosting fee, although electricity, hardware, storage, and internet costs remain. | Recurring price varies by memory, CPU, location, backups, and contract; no comparative figure is established here. |
What the author recommends
The official project page says, “If you’re looking for a good host i recommend Kinetic.” That is the author’s recommendation, not an independent performance test or a guarantee of current availability. Before paying, confirm that Kinetic currently supports Beyond Depth-Ver13.0.1, Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47.4.22, Java 17, the required memory profile, your preferred region, backups, and access to the files you need to edit.
Best Value
Pine Hosting has published a Beyond Depth installation guide, and VeryGames lists Beyond Depth hosting. Their current compatibility, pricing, locations, support scope, and any affiliate arrangements are not established here, so request those details directly before ordering. General tools documented by Modrinth, including Modrinth Servers, mrpack-install, and the itzg/minecraft-server Docker image, are generic server tools; their documentation does not establish that Beyond Depth is distributed through Modrinth.
Updating, backups, and licensing
Use a controlled update process
- Stop the server normally and create a complete copy of the world,
config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, mods, and server settings. - Record the current pack version, Forge build, Java version, and any manual changes.
- Read the new pack’s release notes and install it in a separate directory first.
- Repeat the server installation procedure and client-only removals for the new release instead of overwriting a working server blindly.
- Test a copy of the world, scripts, quests, teams, and a representative set of modded blocks before switching players.
- Keep the previous directory until the new installation has survived a complete play session.
Never update individual mods inside a working Beyond Depth installation unless the pack author specifically instructs you to do so. A seemingly harmless mod update can change dependencies or data formats and make the server and clients disagree.
Understand the permission boundary
Hosting a server is permitted by the author’s license. The same license says the pack may not be distributed, modified, or reuploaded without explicit permission and directs permission requests to the project’s official Discord. Sharing connection details with your players is different from redistributing the pack archive. Do not mirror the pack, publish a modified download, or upload the assembled server files unless you have obtained the required permission.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The installer will not run or the server exits immediately
- Confirm that the selected Java runtime is version 17 and 64-bit.
- Verify that the Forge installer is build 47.4.22 for Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Run the installer in a clean directory and select Install server.
- Read the first meaningful error in the log rather than the final cascade of dependency messages.
- Check that the EULA file has been accepted after the first launch.
The server reports a missing mod or dependency
Compare the server’s mods folder with the working client, excluding the author’s client-only list. Check the exact mod ID and version in the error. The author allows that rare issues may require adding a mod server-side, but add only the dependency identified by the log and test again.
Players are kicked for mismatched mods
Make sure every player uses Beyond Depth-Ver13.0.1 and has not updated an individual mod. Re-copy the server’s shared pack directories from a known-good client source, then repeat the client-only removals. A server and client built from different pack releases can fail even when their Minecraft and Forge versions appear identical.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The server starts but rendering distance behaves strangely
Check the value in server.properties and the corresponding ServerCore configuration value. Both must be changed together. Also distinguish server view distance from a player’s local render-distance setting; lowering the latter affects only that player’s display.
Friends cannot connect
- Test a local connection first.
- Confirm the server is still running and listening on the expected port.
- Check the host firewall and router forwarding target.
- Test from an outside network, not only from the same home Wi-Fi.
- Investigate carrier-grade NAT if forwarding is correct but the public test still fails.
The client is slow or crashes during visual effects
Allocate the author’s recommended 8 GB to the client if your system can spare it, while retaining enough memory for the operating system. If performance remains poor, lower render distance and disable Fresh Animations with its extensions. Do not respond by adding OptiFine or by independently updating optimization mods; both conflict with the pack’s published guidance.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Beyond Depth-Ver13.0.1 is installed for Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Forge 47.4.22 and Java 17 are being used by the server.
config, kubejs, defaultconfigs, andmodscame from the working client instance.- Every client-only mod in the author’s removal list is absent from the server.
- Flight, tick time
-1, and any render-distance changes are intentional. - Render distance matches between
server.propertiesand ServerCore. - The server starts through
run.bat, accepts the EULA, and passes a local join test. - Backups exist before public access is enabled.
- Players have matching pack files and the CurseForge Skip Mojang Launcher option disabled.
- Any hosting provider has confirmed support for this exact pack and software combination.
For a small group with a reliable computer and internet connection, the documented self-hosted procedure gives the most control. A managed host is worthwhile when you do not want to maintain Java, Forge, router rules, backups, and recovery yourself, but verify exact Beyond Depth support before paying.
