Electric vehicles are classified by how they get and store energy, whether they plug in, and what powers their wheels. A BEV runs only on battery electricity; a PHEV combines a plug-in battery with a fuel-burning engine; a conventional HEV cannot be plugged in; and an FCEV uses hydrogen to generate electricity onboard. In this article, “EV” is an umbrella term for these categories, although official sources use it differently.
What are the different types of electric vehicles?
The key distinction is not simply whether a vehicle has an electric motor. The questions to ask are whether it can be plugged in, whether it has a combustion engine or hydrogen fuel cell, and what supplies power to the wheels.

| Type | Energy source and propulsion | Can it plug in? | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery electric vehicle (BEV) | Rechargeable battery supplies electricity to an electric motor. | Yes | Battery-only electric propulsion; no onboard combustion engine for propulsion. |
| Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) | Electric motor and rechargeable battery alongside a combustion engine and fuel tank. | Yes | Can run in electric mode, but can also use fuel. |
| Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) | Combustion engine, electric motor and battery. | No | Battery is replenished through regenerative braking and engine operation. |
| Mild hybrid | Combustion engine with a small assisting motor and battery. | No | The motor assists the engine but cannot drive the vehicle, according to the Australian government’s description. |
| Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) | Hydrogen fuel cell generates electricity for an electric motor. | Not by plugging into a grid, as described by the Australian government source. | Electric propulsion using hydrogen as onboard fuel. |
| Range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) | Driven by an electric motor; its battery can be charged using fuel or mains electricity. | Yes | A special case of PHEV in UK statistical notes; some PHEV totals include REEVs. |
The categories and definitions in this table follow the Australian Government’s electric-vehicle definitions and types of electric vehicles, except the REEV statistical treatment, which follows the UK Government’s vehicle licensing statistics notes.
What does BEV mean?
BEV stands for battery electric vehicle. A rechargeable battery supplies electricity to the motor, and the vehicle plugs in to recharge. It has no onboard combustion engine for propulsion, so it produces no direct tailpipe emissions while operating. That describes emissions at the vehicle, not the emissions associated with generating its electricity or manufacturing it.

What is the difference between a BEV and a PHEV?
A BEV relies on its rechargeable battery for propulsion. A PHEV—plug-in hybrid electric vehicle—has a rechargeable battery and electric motor as well as a combustion engine and fuel tank. It can be driven in electric mode, but fuel-burning operation produces direct emissions.
Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water characterizes a PHEV battery as typically having a limited range of less than 100 km. This is that source’s general description, not a universal range limit: actual electric range varies by vehicle.

Is a hybrid an electric vehicle?
It depends on what the speaker means by “EV.” A conventional HEV has an electric motor and battery, but it does not plug in. Regenerative braking and engine operation replenish its battery, while the vehicle still relies on conventional petroleum fuel. Having an electric motor therefore does not make a vehicle a plug-in vehicle.

A mild hybrid is a distinct, more limited arrangement: its motor assists the combustion engine but cannot drive the vehicle, according to the Australian government’s description. It should not be treated as interchangeable with every conventional HEV.

What does FCEV mean?
FCEV stands for fuel cell electric vehicle. Hydrogen reacts in a fuel cell to generate electricity for an electric motor, so the vehicle is electrically propelled but carries hydrogen as fuel rather than recharging its traction battery from the grid as a BEV does. The Australian government classifies FCEVs as zero-direct-emission vehicles and describes water vapor as the only by-product of the fuel-cell electrochemical reaction. Those statements concern the vehicle’s operation, not the full emissions of producing hydrogen or building the vehicle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How are REEVs classified?
REEV means range-extended electric vehicle. In the UK Government’s statistical notes, it is propelled by an electric motor and its battery can be charged using fuel or mains electricity. Those notes treat REEVs as a special case of PHEV and say PHEV counts sometimes include them. As a result, a REEV’s classification in a statistic depends on the dataset’s stated scheme.

Why does “EV” mean different things?
“EV” does not have one universal scope across official sources. Australia’s energy department uses the term for BEVs, PHEVs and FCEVs. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center discusses BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs as electric vehicles in broad usage, while also using “plug-in electric vehicles” specifically for BEVs and PHEVs. When a distinction matters, use the full category name or acronym rather than assuming “EV” means only a battery-only car.
