A VS Code extension can improve commit messages without writing them for you: validate the text people enter, explain what fails, and let them correct it before committing. VS Code exposes its Source Control input box through the Extension API, including a readable and writable message value. The precise rules, tests, and implementation of the extension in this headline are not established here, so this build story focuses on the verified integration point and the design choices that make a non-AI validator useful.
Where the extension fits in VS Code
For the built-in Git workflow, the natural place to check a commit message is the Source Control input box above the Source Control view. VS Code’s Extension API documentation describes that box as a place for the user to enter a message and exposes its value through SourceControlInputBox.value. An extension can read or set that value. A SourceControl can also provide an acceptInputCommand to handle acceptance of an input message.

That API belongs to VS Code’s broader Source Control Management surface, not exclusively to Git. A concrete implementation should confirm which provider it targets before claiming that it works with every source-control extension. For a Git-specific extension, the useful sequence is to observe or validate the message as the user edits it, then respond when the user tries to accept it.

What “bad commit messages” means in a rule-based design
A validator does not need to invent a message. It needs an agreed format and a clear way to tell the writer whether the current text meets it. Common rule categories include a required type prefix, a subject-length limit, and a maximum line length for the body. The actual extension’s rules cannot be confirmed without its source or project documentation, so these are design options rather than claims about its implementation.

Choose rules the team can explain
- Type prefix: require a recognizable category such as
feat:orfix:when a project follows a typed convention. - Subject length: set a maximum for the first line if the team wants concise summaries.
- Body line length: optionally flag overly long lines in longer explanations.
- Project configuration: if the repository already defines commit rules, prefer reading that configuration over silently imposing a separate standard.
Every rule creates a trade-off. Strict checks make messages more consistent but can reject valid project-specific wording. A warning lets a person proceed while still surfacing a problem; a blocking error enforces the rule more strongly. The interface should identify the failed rule and, when possible, point to the relevant part of the text rather than merely saying the message is invalid.
Validate the message; do not confuse that with generating one
VS Code also documents AI-assisted commit-message generation from staged changes. Its source-control guide describes a sparkle action that generates a message using a configured utility model and notes setup requirements. Availability and account or configuration requirements can vary by VS Code version and setup.

A deterministic validator serves a different purpose: it checks a message the person has written against explicit rules. It can be useful whether or not AI generation is available, and it does not need to send staged changes to a model. “No AI required” therefore describes the extension’s approach, not a claim that VS Code has no AI commit-message feature.

VS Code separates saving files, staging changes, committing, and pushing. The message is used when creating the commit; a local commit is not uploaded until it is pushed. The staging and committing guide describes entering a message and selecting Commit. For longer messages, users can also write in the COMMIT_EDITMSG editor when git.useEditorAsCommitInput is enabled.

This separation matters when designing validation. A check on the Source Control input box addresses that message-entry path. If a project also permits composing a message in the editor, an extension should verify whether its validation covers that route too rather than assuming that one input surface covers every commit.

Separate Marketplace extensions illustrate possible approaches; their features should not be attributed to the extension in this build story.

| Example | What its listing describes | Design approach |
|---|---|---|
| Git 50/72 Commit Message Formatter | Validates subject and body lengths, can flag a missing type: prefix, and offers quick fixes. Its listed defaults are a 50-character subject and 72-character lines, with settings to change them. |
Length checks and configurable type linting, with optional formatting. |
| vscode-commitlint | Runs commitlint as a message is written, reports errors and warnings, highlights affected text, detects project configuration, and supports both the built-in SCM input and a full editor. | Use commitlint configuration or user-provided rules; integrate validation in more than one editing surface. |
| VSCode Conventional Commits | Describes a picker for Conventional Commit messages and support for commitlint configuration. Its listing also mentions optional commit and push behavior. | Help compose a structured message through a picker, with configuration support. |
These examples make clear that “fix bad messages” can mean validating, highlighting, formatting, or guiding composition. A build should state which of those it actually implements, where it runs, and whether a failed check warns or blocks. The extension’s own code and listing are needed to verify those particulars.
What can and cannot be claimed about this build
The verified technical foundation is that VS Code exposes a Source Control input value and offers a command hook for accepting input. That supports an extension design centered on checking a message before acceptance. The available evidence does not establish this specific extension’s repository, exact rules, release or Marketplace status, compatibility range, test results, or whether it uses warnings, quick fixes, or blocking validation. No measured time savings or reduction in bad commits is established either.

Those details matter to anyone deciding whether to adopt or extend the project: inspect its code and documentation for the actual behavior, then test the entry paths and rule configuration used by the team. A validator is only as useful as the match between its rules and the repository’s conventions.
