Better-PaaS turns a Linux server you control into a place to deploy Git-based apps: it builds with Nixpacks, runs apps in Docker containers, and routes them through Caddy with HTTPS. Its agent-first approach lets you authorize scoped access through the paas CLI and connect supported coding assistants through MCP, rather than routinely putting the administrator token on your laptop. It is aimed at side projects, hobby apps, and internal tools on one server—not multi-region auto-scaling.
What Better-PaaS does
Better-PaaS is open-source, self-hosted platform-as-a-service software. You provide and operate the server; the platform supplies a control plane and dashboard for deploying and managing apps from Git repositories. The project describes its control plane as a small Go server and its dashboard as a Next.js web app.

The documented deployment path is Git repository → Nixpacks build → Docker container → Caddy routing and HTTPS. The product overview also lists databases, custom domains, scheduled jobs, backups, logs, and an in-browser shell as capabilities. These are documented features, not independent performance or reliability findings.
What you need to run it
The quickstart calls for a Linux VPS running Ubuntu or Debian, root or sudo access, and an app in a Git repository. It documents these ports:

Open the required ports in both the host firewall and the provider firewall, if the provider has one. The quickstart then covers installation, dashboard login, choosing a repository and branch, and checking the app’s status and URL. Its “under 10 minutes” wording is the project’s estimate, not a guaranteed setup time.
How agent access works
Rather than use the administrator token for routine assistant access, Better-PaaS documents a CLI flow that issues a scoped agent token. The guide says the token is saved in ~/.paas/config.json and the admin token is not saved on the laptop. The documented local CLI requirement is Go 1.22 or later.

Available permissions depend on the profile. The repository distinguishes, for example, read-only Observer access from Deployer permissions. MCP does not expose every platform action: the documentation says destructive actions and some resource-management operations are not currently available through those tools.
What the documented security controls do—and do not—establish
Better-PaaS says agent tokens can be scoped, revoked, and audited, and that mutating API requests are recorded. It also documents AES-256-GCM encryption for saved Git-related credentials. These are product documentation claims, not the results of a third-party security audit.
There is an important limit to the at-rest encryption model: by default, the encryption key is stored beside the database. As the security guide puts it, “By default the key lives next to the database, so encryption at rest doesn’t stop an attacker who can already read the entire data directory.” The documented arrangement therefore does not protect those credentials if an attacker can access the complete data directory.
Who it suits, and where the trade-off lies
Better-PaaS is a fit to consider if you want to run Git-based apps on infrastructure you control and are comfortable operating a server. You retain control over the server, application data, and runtime, but you also take responsibility for infrastructure and server operations.

The project positions it for one-server workloads such as side projects, hobby apps, and internal tools. It explicitly says it is not designed as a multi-region auto-scaling cloud. If you need that scaling model or want a provider to take on more of the infrastructure work, a managed deployment platform may suit you better. With Better-PaaS, also determine who will handle database and backup responsibilities for your particular deployment; the product lists database and backup features, but self-hosting does not transfer server operations to a hosting provider.

Software price and infrastructure costs
Better-PaaS’s pricing page says the software is free under the AGPL-3.0 license; you pay your chosen provider for infrastructure. The page names Hetzner and DigitalOcean as examples, not required providers. It also notes that resource needs increase for production workloads or heavy Nixpacks builds, without providing an independent benchmark. Check the current pricing page and your provider’s terms when estimating a deployment.
