For Better Minecraft, allocate at least 4GB of RAM to the client, with 6–8GB recommended. A computer with 16GB of total system memory is the sensible baseline. For a self-hosted server, start at 6GB allocated RAM; use 8–10GB when five or more players are exploring. These figures are configuration guidance, not a guarantee of a particular player count, because world generation, dimensions, entities and view distance can change demand dramatically.

The editions covered by the current guides require 64-bit Java 17 or newer. Every player and the server must run the exact same Better MC edition and mod loader. A fast, modern CPU, SSD storage and a stable upload connection can matter as much as adding memory.

| Use case | Memory guidance | Processor | Graphics | Storage | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum client | 8GB system RAM, with 4GB allocated to Minecraft | Intel Core i3 (8th generation) or AMD Ryzen 3 | Integrated graphics or NVIDIA GTX 660 equivalent | 10GB free | 64-bit operating system and Java 17 (64-bit) |
| Recommended client | 16GB system RAM, with 6–8GB allocated | Intel Core i5 (10th generation) or AMD Ryzen 5 | NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580 or better | 15GB on an SSD | 64-bit Java 17 |
| Self-hosted server starting point | 6GB allocated | At least 4 cores | Not applicable | 15GB free; SSD preferred | Java 17, port 25565, stable connection |
| Self-hosted server for five or more players | 8–10GB allocated | 6 or more cores recommended | Not applicable | SSD strongly preferred | 10+ Mbps upload recommended |
The dedicated-server requirements also describe systems with 8–16GB of total server memory, at least 4–6GB assigned to the game process, a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 with high single-thread performance, and 20GB or more of SSD space. The multiplayer guide is more conservative for an actual self-hosted setup and sets 6GB as its minimum allocation.
How much RAM the Better Minecraft client needs
Minimum that can launch the pack
The minimum client profile is an eighth-generation Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3, 8GB of total system RAM, and 4GB assigned to Minecraft. Integrated graphics or a GTX 660-class card, 10GB of free storage, a 64-bit operating system and 64-bit Java 17 complete that floor. It is a launch-and-play minimum, not a promise of smooth performance: large bases, busy villages and newly generated terrain can still produce frame-rate drops or pauses.

Configuration that leaves useful headroom
The recommended profile moves to a tenth-generation Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5, 16GB of system RAM and 6–8GB allocated to the game. A GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580 (or faster), 15GB on an SSD and Java 17 are the corresponding targets. Six gigabytes is often a practical starting value; eight gives more room for high-resolution resource packs, many entities and long sessions, provided the operating system still has memory available.
Do not give Minecraft all available memory
The Better MC troubleshooting guidance says never allocate more than half of the computer’s total RAM. On an 8GB machine, that means 4GB is the upper limit; on a 16GB machine, 6–8GB is appropriate while Windows or Linux, the launcher, voice chat and background services use the remainder. Excessive allocation can make garbage collection pauses worse and leave the operating system swapping to disk.

How much RAM a Better Minecraft server needs
Start at 6GB for self-hosting
The multiplayer guidance sets 6GB of allocated RAM as the minimum for a self-hosted server. That is a sensible starting point for a small group when players are not all generating new terrain at once. Use a 64-bit Java runtime and assign the memory explicitly in the supplied start script, for example -Xms6G -Xmx6G for a fixed six-gigabyte heap.
Use 8–10GB for five or more active players
For five or more players, the same guide recommends 8–10GB allocated. This is especially relevant when several people travel in different directions, visit other dimensions or load farms simultaneously. The figure is planning guidance rather than a measured capacity guarantee; there is no published benchmark that maps every RAM tier to an exact player limit.

Account for the whole server machine
A server with an 8GB heap still needs memory for the operating system, Java’s native allocations, file cache and any monitoring or backup tools. The dedicated-server requirements describe 8–16GB of total physical RAM depending on player demand, with at least 4–6GB assigned to the server process. In practice, treating 6GB as the minimum allocation and buying total RAM above that leaves safer headroom than trying to run an 8GB heap on an 8GB computer.
CPU, storage and network requirements
Single-thread speed affects tick time
Better MC performs substantial work on a main game thread: entity updates, redstone, chunk preparation and parts of world generation. The multiplayer guide lists four CPU cores as a minimum and six or more as recommended. Core count helps with background tasks, but high single-thread performance is equally important. A newer Core i5 or Ryzen 5 generally fits the recommended class better than an older processor with many slow cores.
Use an SSD and leave free space
The client guidance calls for 10GB free at minimum and 15GB on an SSD as the recommendation. A dedicated server should have at least 15GB free, while the broader server requirements call for 20GB or more on SSD storage. Space is consumed by the modpack, libraries, logs, backups and an expanding world; running a drive nearly full can also reduce its write performance.
Provide upload capacity and the correct port
For internet self-hosting, the multiplayer guide recommends at least 10Mbps upload bandwidth, while the general server requirements list 5Mbps as a minimum. The higher figure is the safer target when multiple players are online. Forward TCP port 25565 to the server computer and allow Java through the host firewall. Actual latency and connection stability matter in addition to the advertised speed.

Java versions, loaders and edition matching
Install 64-bit Java 17
BMC4 for Minecraft 1.20.1 and BMC5 for Minecraft 1.21.1 require Java 17 or newer according to the troubleshooting guide. Use a 64-bit build; a 32-bit runtime cannot address the required heap reliably. If a launcher has its own Java management, verify that the profile points to a 64-bit Java 17 executable rather than an older system installation.
Match the mod loader
The loader depends on the Better MC generation:
| Better MC generation | Minecraft version covered by the guide | Loader |
|---|---|---|
| BMC2/BMC3 | Earlier editions | Fabric |
| BMC4 | 1.20.1 | Forge |
| BMC5 | 1.21.1 | NeoForge |
Do not mix a Fabric client with a Forge or NeoForge server. “All players and the server must use the exact same Better MC version,” so the pack number, Minecraft version and loader must all agree. A mismatch commonly appears as missing-mod errors, a failed handshake or a disconnect before the world loads.
Manual server installation
Manual setup uses the full Server Pack, not the small launcher manifest. The manifest is roughly 50MB and is intended for an app-managed installation; it does not contain everything required to run a standalone server.
- Open the Better MC files listing and download the Server Pack that matches the edition your players use.
- Extract the pack into a dedicated folder on the SSD. Avoid a path that is synchronized by a cloud-drive client.
- Install 64-bit Java 17 and confirm the executable used by the server is that version.
- Run the supplied start script once. It creates the initial configuration and world files, then stops because the EULA has not been accepted.
- Open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save it, and run the script again. - Edit
server.properties. Set a recognizable server name, review the difficulty and whitelist options, and lowerview-distanceto 8–10 if chunk loading strains the CPU. - Set heap flags in the start script. For an 8GB allocation, a typical fixed setting is
-Xms8G -Xmx8G; use 6G for a smaller server and 8–10G for a group of five or more, while preserving memory for the operating system. - Wait for the first world load to finish before joining. The first startup can take substantially longer because libraries are checked and spawn chunks are generated.
LAN play versus an internet server
LAN world
A LAN world requires every player to be on the same local network. It exists only while the host is playing, so closing the host’s game ends access. This is the simplest option for a household or temporary session and does not require port forwarding.

Internet server
An always-available server runs separately from a player’s client. Forward TCP port 25565 from the router to the server’s local address, permit Java in the firewall and give friends the public address and port. Reserve the server’s local IP so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot. A whitelist is advisable when the address is shared beyond the intended group.

Lower view and render distance
Render distance controls how many client chunks are drawn; server view-distance controls how many chunks are sent and simulated. Set both to 8–10 when performance is constrained, then raise them gradually. Lowering these values reduces simultaneous chunk generation and network traffic without changing the modpack.
Use the optimization mods supplied for the loader
OptiFine is not compatible with Better MC. Forge editions include Embeddium and Oculus, while Fabric editions include Sodium, Lithium and Iris. Use the components bundled for the relevant edition rather than adding an unrelated optimization mod that may conflict with the pack.
Reduce competing load
- Close browsers with many tabs, video editors and other memory-heavy applications before launching.
- Keep the world and Java installation on an SSD with generous free space.
- Stop unnecessary server-side map renderers, backup jobs or monitoring tools during troubleshooting.
- Watch CPU utilization and tick time as well as the Java heap; a full heap is not the only cause of lag.
Diagnosing common problems
The game crashes at launch
Check that Java is 64-bit version 17 or newer, the selected loader matches the edition, and the client has the exact pack version expected by the server. On an 8GB computer, reduce the allocation to 4GB rather than assigning more than half the system memory.

The server starts but players rubber-band
Lower server view-distance to 8–10, confirm the server is on an SSD, and inspect CPU usage during exploration. If five or more players are generating separate areas, move from 6GB toward 8–10GB only when the machine has enough total RAM to support that heap.

Players are rejected during connection
Compare the complete Better MC version, Minecraft version and loader on every client and on the server. A single different modpack build can produce a handshake failure even when the displayed Minecraft version looks the same.
The server cannot be reached from outside the house
Verify TCP port 25565 forwarding, the host firewall rule for Java and the router’s current public address. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot; a local test can succeed even when inbound internet traffic is blocked by the router or ISP.
When should you upgrade?
- Upgrade system RAM when the operating system is paging, the launcher closes other applications, or you cannot give the client its required 4–8GB without exceeding half of total memory.
- Upgrade the CPU when tick time remains high with view distance reduced and the heap is not consistently full.
- Move from an HDD to an SSD when terrain generation causes long freezes, startup is slow or disk activity remains at 100 percent.
- Increase server allocation only after checking player activity, dimension travel and simultaneous chunk loading; more heap cannot compensate for a weak single-thread CPU or an unstable network.
Because Better MC editions and their server packs change over time, recheck the edition’s current Java, loader and pack requirements whenever you update the modpack. Keep a copy of the world before changing versions, and update clients and server together.
