For a speech-focused setup, compare the RØDE PodMic, Shure MV7X and Audio-Technica AT2040: each is a dynamic XLR option, but they differ in pickup pattern, manufacturer-stated gain needs and included mounting features. There is no verified head-to-head test here, so treat these as candidates to match to your setup—not tested winners.
How to choose an XLR mic for streaming
XLR describes the microphone’s connection, not a complete computer audio setup. A computer streamer generally needs an audio interface or mixer between the microphone and computer, plus an XLR cable. A stand or boom arm holds the mic; headphones are useful for monitoring. Shure’s setup guide explains the interface or mixer connection path: Shure’s streaming setup guide.

Start with your room and pickup pattern
Dynamic microphones can be a sensible shortlist for speech in a room with some background noise or reflections. RØDE says dynamic mics are less sensitive to room noise and reflections, but that does not mean they cancel noise or make room treatment unnecessary. Mic position, room conditions and your speaking technique still matter. See RØDE’s microphone guidance for streaming.
Pickup patterns are another factor. The PodMic is cardioid; the AT2040 is hypercardioid. These labels describe different pickup shapes, not a verified head-to-head noise-rejection result. Think about where your keyboard, other people and reflective surfaces are in relation to the mic, and position yourself consistently in front of it.
#1 Best Overall

Directional cardioid dynamic microphone corded will not exaggerate your voice, while rejects unwanted off-axis noise for vocal originality and intelligibility during your PS5 gaming streaming video recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Check gain compatibility before buying
The microphone’s output and your interface’s preamp determine how much gain you may need. Shure says the MV7X works with almost any audio interface without additional gain; this is the manufacturer’s claim, not a guarantee for every interface, speaking distance or recording level. Shure says the SM7B needs more gain than many entry-level or mid-tier preamps. Its streaming setup guide recommends an inline preamp for that setup, but whether you need one depends on your interface and gain chain.
Compare the whole setup, not only the mic
An XLR mic’s purchase price is only part of the setup cost: include an interface or mixer if you do not already own one, as well as an XLR cable. A boom arm, headphones and acoustic treatment may be useful, but are not all mandatory for the mic to connect. Current prices and the combined cost of each microphone plus an interface were not established here, so check your region’s current listings before choosing.

Which one fits your streaming setup?
Choose the PodMic if its built-in practical features suit you
The PodMic is worth comparing if you want a manufacturer-positioned livestreaming and speech mic with an internal pop filter, internal shock mount and integrated swing mount. Its listed cardioid pattern is one consideration for positioning, not proof that it will outperform another mic in your room.

- [Authentic Sound Integrity] Experience natural sound reproduction with the podcast microphone with boom arm, preserving audio without distortion. The XLR dynamic microphone boasts a SPL of 120dB-handling extreme instrument sound pressure and sharp transients—delivering original and consistent recordings. Cardioid pattern reduces ambient noise, ensuring your voice takes center stage. (For better input volume, record within 2'' to 6''.)
- [Flexible Connectivity Options] Equipped with both USB and XLR connections, recording studio microphone kit offers versatility to suit your streaming/gaming needs. Seamlessly transition between plug-and-play USB convenience or enhanced XLR connectivity, providing flexibility and studio-grade sound reproduction.
- [Robust Boom Arm Support] Crafted from durable metal, the boom arm microphone stand ensure secure placement of the XLR/USB dynamic microphone. Whether you're podcasting or streaming, the sturdy suspension recording microphone kit lessen collisions and vibrations for uninterrupted and smooth audio quality.
- [Intuitive Controls] Manage your podcast session with intuitive controls. The USB microphone features a tap-to-mute button for instant muting without software adjustments. Fine-tune audio levels with the gain knob, while the headphone monitoring jack and volume knob keep you informed and in control, optimizing recording effectiveness. (All the function keys on the mic are invalid when XLR connection. You can operate on mixer or audio interface to control the XLR mic.)
- [Enhanced Noise Suppression] The included windscreen and shock mount set on the PC microphone for music recording effectively do away with harsh noises caused by explosive sounds and low-frequency vibrations. The heavy-duty boom arm maintains distance from your desktop, preventing noise interference, resulting in smoother, clearer vocals during voice-over and streams. (For optimal input volume, adjust input volume via the mic's gain knob in USB connection, or control on your audio interface when XLR connection.)
Choose the MV7X if interface gain is a concern
The MV7X is a relevant candidate if you want an XLR mic explicitly positioned for spoken word and value Shure’s stated compatibility with almost any interface without additional gain. Check your interface and recording level in practice; the statement should not be generalized to every signal chain.
Choose the AT2040 if you want a more directional pattern
The AT2040’s hypercardioid specification distinguishes it from the PodMic’s cardioid pattern. Consider how you will sit and what is beside or behind you, and do not infer a noise-rejection winner from pattern names alone. Its published sensitivity and frequency response are model specifications, not category benchmarks.
Rank #4
- XLR MICROPHONE: requires an audio interface or mixer with an XLR input, not a USB microphone
- PODCAST-READY SOUND: broadcast-quality dynamic capsule tuned for speech, rejects room noise in untreated spaces
- BUILT-IN POP PROTECTION: internal pop filter and shock mounting tame plosives and desk thumps without extra accessories
- ALL-METAL BUILD: robust body designed to sit on air for years, matches the RØDECaster family
- IN THE BOX: PodMic with integrated swing mount, connects to any XLR interface, mixer or RØDECaster
Consider the SM7B as a gain-chain alternative
The Shure SM7B is a premium reference point rather than one of the three primary XLR candidates above. Shure’s user guide lists sensitivity at -59 dBV/Pa and says it needs more gain than many entry-level or mid-tier preamps. Shure’s streaming guide recommends an inline preamp for its setup; the need for an added preamp depends on your interface and setup, rather than being universal. See the SM7B user guide and Shure’s streaming setup guide.

Want both USB and XLR?
The RØDE PodMic USB is an adjacent hybrid option rather than an XLR-only choice. RØDE describes it as a dynamic microphone with analog XLR and USB-C connectivity, onboard DSP and headphone monitoring, and lists streaming among its uses. It may suit a workflow that values both connection options; see RØDE PodMic USB.

Build the rest of the signal path
- Connect the mic to an interface or mixer. Use an XLR cable from the microphone to the interface or mixer, then connect that device to your computer. Follow the interface maker’s instructions for input selection and gain.
- Place the mic for your voice. Use a stable stand or boom arm, speak toward the intended front of the microphone, and keep your distance and angle consistent. Use headphones if you need to monitor your own level or hear stream audio without relying on speakers.
- Set a clean level. Speak at your normal streaming volume and adjust the interface input gain so your voice is clear without clipping. The right setting depends on the mic, interface, voice and distance; no universal gain number is established for these models.
- Check the complete stream path. Select the interface as your input in your streaming software, make a test recording or private test, and listen for clipping, excessive room sound, cable noise or an unbalanced position before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, that is separate from choosing a microphone for live speech. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly costs $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Copyright and channel rules still matter
A microphone choice does not determine whether a livestream complies with YouTube’s rules. Use music, video and other material you have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies—especially if you plan to repeat recorded material. A dynamic microphone does not make copyrighted background audio permissible, and a 24/7 stream is not automatically exempt from platform rules.
