Best Xbox Network Settings for Lower Multiplayer Latency

Measure your Xbox connection first, then troubleshoot Wi-Fi, NAT, and optional QoS tagging based on what your network supports.

There is no single Xbox setting that reliably lowers multiplayer latency on every network. Start by measuring the console’s connection, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if wireless seems unstable. Xbox’s optional QoS tagging is worth testing only if your router or managed network prioritizes tagged traffic; on incompatible equipment, it can cause connection problems.

Record a baseline before changing settings

On the Xbox, open Settings > General > Network settings and select Test network speed & statistics. Note the reported latency and packet loss, along with the connection type, before making changes. Run the test again under similar conditions after each change so you can tell whether anything actually improved.

Download speed and latency measure different things: a fast download result does not by itself show that a multiplayer connection has low or stable latency. The available Xbox troubleshooting guidance does not establish a universal latency number that every player should target.

Check NAT when multiplayer connections fail

In Network settings, check the console’s NAT type if you cannot join a game, connect to other players, or use multiplayer features reliably. NAT is useful diagnostic information for connection and matchmaking problems; checking or changing it is not, by itself, a demonstrated way to lower in-game ping. Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S connectivity guide also recommends running the network test and checking NAT type.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection

If the console is on Wi-Fi and you are seeing unstable results or packet loss, connect it to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. Rockstar support recommends trying a wired connection when troubleshooting persistent Xbox connectivity issues. Use an Ethernet cable that reaches the router; the cited guidance does not require a special cable category or guarantee a specific latency improvement.

Compare results as fairly as possible: use the same console, game or test, and similar network conditions. Ethernet can help identify whether the wireless link is contributing to instability, but it cannot fix congestion or problems elsewhere between your home network and the game server.

Test Xbox QoS tagging only if your network supports it

Xbox offers optional Quality of Service (QoS) packet tagging for outbound multiplayer traffic. Microsoft describes its purpose as helping reduce the effect of network congestion on tagged latency-sensitive traffic when the network supports prioritization. It is not a universal ping-reduction switch, and Microsoft warns that some network devices or managed network configurations may cause connection issues when tagging is enabled.

  1. On the console, go to Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > QoS Tagging.
  2. Enable WMM tagging for Wi-Fi, DSCP tagging for Wi-Fi or a wired connection, or test the available option appropriate to your connection.
  3. Repeat the network test under similar conditions and check whether multiplayer performance or connection reliability changes.
  4. If connection problems appear after enabling tagging, turn it off and compare again.

These tags can only help if the router, access point, or managed network recognizes and prioritizes them. If you do not know whether your network supports that behavior, treat QoS tagging as an optional comparison—not a setting to assume will help. Microsoft explains the feature and its limitations in its Xbox QoS packet tagging documentation, updated April 28, 2025.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence

  1. Run Test network speed & statistics and record latency, packet loss, and whether the Xbox is using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Check NAT type if the problem is joining or connecting to multiplayer sessions.
  3. If using Wi-Fi and results are unstable, try Ethernet and repeat the same checks.
  4. Only then compare QoS tagging enabled versus disabled, keeping other conditions as similar as possible.

Change one thing at a time. If results vary from test to test, repeat them before attributing a difference to a setting. The cited sources describe the Xbox diagnostics and QoS behavior, but do not report measured latency improvements from enabling tagging.
