Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a new Xbox Series X or Series S, buy accessories to solve a specific need—not just to fill out the setup. The console package includes one controller, and most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories work with Series X|S, so check what you already own first. A second player may call for another controller; private audio and chat may call for a headset; a crowded game library may call for extra storage.
What should you buy first?
Start with what is missing from your setup. Xbox’s accessories catalog groups its official products under controllers, headsets and communication, charging solutions, and storage. That makes the practical choices easier to separate:

- More than one player: consider a second Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Private game audio or voice chat: compare a wireless headset with a wired stereo headset.
- More room for games: choose between an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card and a USB 3.1 external hard drive, understanding that they are not equivalent options.
- Fewer disposable batteries: Xbox lists a Rechargeable Battery + USB-C as a charging option.
These are category-based recommendations, not a performance ranking: the available product information does not establish which controller is most comfortable, which headset sounds best, or which option offers the best value. Xbox’s accessories catalog lists the official categories and products.
Do you need another controller?
A Series X package includes one controller, an HDMI cable, and a power cord. If you want local multiplayer or need a replacement, the standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the straightforward option listed in Xbox’s catalog. Before buying, check the box contents and whether an Xbox One controller you already own will work: Xbox says most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories are compatible with Series X|S. Xbox’s Series X page covers compatibility and storage guidance.

Standard or premium?
Xbox also lists the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Treat that as a premium-feature alternative rather than an automatic upgrade for everyone. The cited product information does not support a claim that it is better for every player or quantify a performance advantage. Choose based on the features you specifically want, and compare the exact model details before purchasing.
Should you choose a wireless or wired headset?
Xbox lists both the Xbox Wireless Headset and the wired Xbox Stereo Headset, as well as compatible headsets from other manufacturers. A wireless model avoids a cable running to the controller; a wired model is a simpler choice if you prefer a direct connection. Those are setup trade-offs, not findings about sound or comfort.

Before buying, check whether the headset meets your needs for game audio and chat, whether its connection method suits your setup, and whether it is compatible with the devices you plan to use. Comfort and budget matter too, but the cited sources do not provide comparative listening tests, comfort measurements, or a verified ranking of headset models. Xbox’s US catalog lists additional third-party options: Xbox accessories and compatible products.
Which storage option fits a Series X|S?
Choose an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card if you want added storage that Xbox describes as matching the console’s internal SSD performance. The Seagate product page lists 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB versions and says the card is compatible with Xbox Series X and Series S. Seagate’s page describes it as maintaining the same peak speed and performance as the console’s internal SSD; that is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent comparative test. See the Xbox/Seagate Storage Expansion Card specifications and capacities.

Xbox also says Series X supports USB 3.1 external HDD storage. That is a separate route for adding storage, not another name for the expansion card: the cited Xbox guidance does not describe a USB HDD as matching internal SSD performance. If internal-SSD-level performance is your priority, the expansion card is the option specifically presented for that purpose. If considering a USB hard drive, confirm the console’s current guidance for the games and storage behavior you care about before buying; the cited material does not establish detailed game-by-game storage or transfer rules.

Accessories are optional unless they meet a real need. If you play alone and the included controller works for you, an extra controller can wait. If you do not need private audio or voice chat, a headset can wait. If your current storage is sufficient, there is no need to choose an expansion card or external HDD immediately. Xbox’s catalog also lists a rechargeable battery and USB-C charging option, which may be useful if you want a rechargeable setup rather than buying another controller.
