The best workout app depends on what you want to do: Nike Training Club is a strong free starting point for general workouts, Fitbod focuses on adaptive strength plans, Nike Run Club is built around running, and Strava emphasizes outdoor activity tracking and social features. For instructor-led classes, consider Peloton, Apple Fitness+, or FitOn. These are category matches, not a universal ranking or evidence that an app itself improves health.
Choose an app by the workout you will actually do
A large class library is not automatically useful if you want a progressive lifting plan; a GPS tracker is not a substitute for guided instruction. Start with the activity and coaching format that fit your routine, then check equipment, device support, and subscription terms.

- General home workouts: Look for a mix of workout types, levels, durations, and equipment filters.
- Strength training: Decide whether you want a plan that adapts to past sessions, a class to follow, or a log for recording sets.
- Running or cycling outdoors: Prioritize route or GPS tracking, activity metrics, and any social features you will use.
- Instructor-led classes: Check whether the app has the class styles and live or on-demand format you prefer.

Before following a plan, check the session description for intensity, duration, and equipment. Start at a level you can perform comfortably, and do not treat an app’s suggested progression as medical advice or a substitute for professional guidance when you have an injury or health concern.
Do you need equipment?
Not always. Apple’s App Store editorial describes Peloton classes ranging from machine-based sessions to bodyweight workouts, and Nike Training Club offers equipment filters. Check the equipment listed for each session rather than assuming an entire app is either equipment-free or requires a home gym. If a routine calls for weights, adjustable dumbbells may be useful, but they are not a prerequisite for bodyweight sessions.

Check device support, subscriptions, and location use
Confirm the devices you rely on
Before subscribing, check the app’s current listing and requirements for your phone, watch, and operating system. Apple Fitness+ is described by Tom’s Guide as integrating with Apple Watch, but that does not establish compatibility with other watch ecosystems. If you want workouts to appear on a watch or activity data to sync between services, verify that specific connection before committing.
Look beyond the headline price
Check whether the classes, plans, offline access, or other features you care about are included in the free tier or require a subscription. A free app may still have paid extras, as Apple’s description of FitOn’s PRO features illustrates. Review the current price, billing period, trial terms, and renewal details shown for your region in the app store or service before signing up.

Review location permissions for tracking apps
GPS-based outdoor tracking can require location access. If you use an app for routes or activity recording, review its current privacy policy and your phone’s location permissions, and decide whether the tracking features are worth sharing location data. The product descriptions cited here do not establish each app’s current data collection or sharing practices.
What workout apps can—and cannot—tell you about health
These apps provide workouts, plans, classes, or activity-tracking features; those descriptions are not clinical evidence that a particular app will make someone fit or healthy. No publication-ready health-outcome statistic is established by the cited material. Choose an app as a tool for carrying out an activity you intend to do, rather than as a promise of a health result.
