WPScan is the best choice for a quick, permission-based online check of a WordPress URL. For continuous protection that can inspect files on the site itself, use an installed scanner such as Wordfence or Jetpack Scan. Jetpack Protect is a lighter option for daily vulnerability checks. No scanner proves that a site is secure: findings still require patching, backups and, when necessary, incident response.
Which WordPress scanner fits your situation?
| Tool | Best for | How it scans | Coverage described by the vendor | Cadence and response |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WPScan | A one-time external check | Enter a site URL for an instant online report | WordPress core, plugin and theme vulnerabilities in its vulnerability database | On-demand report; you must confirm permission to scan |
| Wordfence | Deep, installed malware and integrity scanning | Plugin scans the WordPress installation and content | Malicious code, backdoors, shells, malicious URLs, infection patterns, posts, pages, comments, sensitive files, and vulnerable or outdated core, plugins and themes | Scheduled or manual scans, alerts and remediation tools; some Free protections are delayed |
| Jetpack Scan | Automated monitoring with guided cleanup | Installed service checks site files and known vulnerabilities | Plugins, must-use plugins, themes, uploads, and selected WordPress root and wp-content files |
Automated scans, email alerts and one-click fixes for many findings |
| Jetpack Protect | Daily vulnerability alerts | Automated service associated with the site | Known vulnerabilities in WordPress core, themes and plugins | Daily scans; WordPress.com documentation says its Jetpack Scan data comes from WPScan and the WordPress.com security team |
These are different scopes rather than a verified accuracy league table. An external URL scan cannot see everything an authenticated plugin can inspect, while an installed scanner requires access to the site and its files.
Best for a fast, free external check: WPScan
WPScan provides a free, instant report for a website URL. Before submitting a target, confirm that you own it or have explicit authorization. The service presents the confirmation, “I have permission to scan this site and agree to the Terms of Service.” Scanning someone else’s site without permission can violate policy or law.
WPScan is useful when you need a quick exposure check before installing anything. Its stated vulnerability database covers WordPress core, plugins and themes. The result is an external assessment, so it should be treated as a starting point: it does not replace a file-integrity or malware scan inside the WordPress installation, nor does it fix the issues it identifies.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Use WPScan when
- You need an immediate check of a site URL.
- You cannot yet install a security plugin.
- You want to identify known vulnerable versions of core, plugins or themes.
Best installed scanner for malware and site files: Wordfence
Wordfence Scan checks the installation for malicious code, backdoors, shells, malicious URLs and infection patterns. It also examines posts, pages, comments, publicly accessible sensitive files, and vulnerable or outdated WordPress components.
The vendor recommends Standard Scan for most sites. Standard Scan does not include plugin- and theme-repository comparison checks by default; you can enable those checks in the scan settings when you need file-change comparisons. High Sensitivity scans use more server resources and take longer, so schedule them for periods of low traffic and watch the hosting account’s CPU and memory limits.

What Wordfence Free changes
Wordfence Free includes malware scanning and vulnerability alerts. Wordfence states that firewall rules and malware signatures in the free version are delayed by 30 days compared with its real-time feed. That delay matters most when a new exploit is actively circulating; it is a product limitation, not evidence that the scanner is inaccurate.
A practical Wordfence workflow
- Install and activate Wordfence from the WordPress dashboard, then complete its setup prompts.
- Open Wordfence > Scan and run the recommended Standard Scan.
- Review each result’s file path, rule explanation and severity instead of deleting files blindly.
- Enable repository checks in scan settings if you need plugin or theme file comparisons.
- Update vulnerable components, remove software you no longer need, and restore or quarantine compromised files using a known-good backup or the vendor’s remediation guidance.
Best for automated monitoring and one-click fixes: Jetpack Scan
Jetpack Scan describes automated checks for known vulnerabilities and suspicious changes in plugins, must-use plugins, themes, uploads, and selected files in the WordPress root and wp-content directories. It sends email alerts and offers one-click fixes for many findings.

- FIDO Certified Security Key - Meets FIDO and FIDO2 standards. Works with Google, Microsoft, GitHub, Dropbox, and more. Please check service compatibility before purchase.
- Passwordless Login with Passkey - Supports passkey login via WebAuthn and CTAP2. Enjoy password-free sign-ins where supported. Not all websites or services currently support passkeys.
- Advanced Multi-Factor Authentication - Offers 200 FIDO2 passkey slots and 50 OATH-TOTP slots. Strong, flexible 2FA/MFA support across various apps and authentication platforms.
That convenience is most useful for site owners who want an ongoing service rather than a manual scan. Jetpack cautions that threats present before Scan was activated may need additional cleanup, so a newly enabled service should not be treated as a guaranteed historical sweep or a substitute for professional incident response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best for daily vulnerability alerts: Jetpack Protect
Jetpack Protect describes daily automated scans for vulnerabilities associated with WordPress core, themes and plugins. It is narrower than a full malware and file-integrity investigation because its stated focus is known component vulnerabilities.

Online scan versus installed scan
External URL scan
- Requires only a URL and authorized permission.
- Quickly identifies some publicly observable versions and known vulnerabilities.
- Cannot reliably inspect private files, database content, server configuration or hidden persistence.
Installed site scan
- Can inspect files, uploads and WordPress content from inside the installation.
- Supports recurring schedules, alerts and remediation workflows.
- Consumes hosting resources and requires plugin access, maintenance and careful handling of false positives.
How to act on a scanner result
- Confirm the finding. Record the affected component, installed version, file path and severity. Check the vendor’s explanation before changing files.
- Make a recovery point. Create a tested backup of the database and files, stored separately from the live host.
- Patch or remove. Update WordPress, plugins and themes from trusted sources. Delete abandoned or unused extensions rather than leaving them enabled.
- Investigate malware separately. Unexpected administrators, modified core files, unfamiliar PHP files, redirects or suspicious scheduled tasks may require a clean restore and credential rotation.
- Rescan and monitor. Run the relevant scan again, check logs and keep recurring alerts enabled.
Limitations every scanner user should understand
- A known-vulnerability database can miss a newly disclosed issue, a private vulnerability, or a compromise unrelated to a listed component.
- A clean result is a point-in-time observation, not a security guarantee.
- Repository comparison and high-sensitivity checks may be optional, resource-intensive or delayed depending on the product and plan.
- Previously infected sites can require manual forensic cleanup even when an automated tool offers a fix.
Recommendation
Choose WPScan for a fast, authorized URL report; choose Wordfence when malware detection and detailed inspection of a self-hosted installation are the priority; choose Jetpack Scan when automated monitoring and one-click remediation are more valuable; and choose Jetpack Protect for daily checks focused on known core, plugin and theme vulnerabilities. For higher-risk sites, combining an external check with an installed scanner, reliable backups, prompt updates and an incident-response plan gives broader coverage than relying on any single product.
