Upload a .webp file from Media → Add New (or the editor’s image-upload control), then insert it in a post or page like a JPEG or PNG. Native WebP upload support arrived in WordPress 5.8, but your host must provide WebP-capable GD or Imagick image processing. If WordPress cannot upload or resize the file, check that server support before installing a plugin.
What you need before uploading WebP
- WordPress 5.8 or newer: this is the release that added native WebP upload and use.
- WebP-capable server processing: WordPress relies on the GD or Imagick library supplied by your host to read, resize and generate image sizes.
- A valid WebP file: export one from an image editor, a command-line converter or a tool such as Squoosh.
Basic WebP use does not inherently require a plugin. A plugin may still be useful for bulk conversion or a specialized delivery strategy, but it cannot compensate for a host whose image library lacks WebP support.
Upload and insert a WebP image
- Confirm the site version. In the dashboard, open Dashboard → Updates and check that WordPress is at least 5.8. Keep a current backup before updating.
- Prepare the file. Export the image as
.webp. Choose lossy compression for smaller photographic files, or a lossless setting when preserving exact pixel data matters. Verify transparency or animation requirements before conversion. - Upload it. Open Media → Add New, select the WebP file, and wait for the upload to finish. You can also select the image block in the editor and use its upload option.
- Insert it. In a post or page, add an Image block, choose Media Library, select the WebP, and set the size, alignment, link and alt text.
- Check the public page. Preview or publish the content, open it in a private browser window, and confirm that the image displays at the intended dimensions. Check the browser’s network or page-inspection tools if you need to verify the delivered file type.
Choose the right WebP workflow
| Workflow | Best for | What happens | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upload an existing WebP | New posts and manually prepared assets | You convert the image first, then upload and insert it through WordPress. | Existing JPEG and PNG files remain unchanged unless you convert them separately. |
| Conversion plugin or server workflow | Sites with large existing media libraries | A tool creates WebP versions or changes delivery behavior according to its settings. | Results depend on the plugin, WordPress version, storage policy and host processing support. |
| WordPress 7.1 client-side processing | Sites running WordPress 7.1 with a supported browser | Browser-side processing can compress, resize, convert and generate thumbnails, including JPEG-to-WebP conversion. | It is version- and browser-dependent; other versions or unsupported browsers may use a different path. |
Do not assume that uploading a JPEG automatically creates or serves a WebP everywhere. Conversion behavior, generated sizes and whether the original format is retained depend on the installed version and configuration.
WebP quality, transparency and animation
WebP can contain lossy, lossless, transparent and animated images, but WordPress’s resizing path and server library affect what survives processing. The WordPress 5.8 Core documentation noted that animated and alpha-channel uploads were resized as lossy images, while lossless handling depended on Imagick support at that time. Test an important transparent logo or animated file after upload rather than assuming every generated thumbnail matches the original.

- Convert pictures in to batch mode and export jpeg, png, jpg or other image format
- Photo size converter helps to compress and resize pictures in high quality
- Jpeg converter easily converters multiple pictures in to other image format
- Share images by reducing and compressing the image sizes by maintain quality
- Choose compress level and reduce the image size to easily share pictures
Alt text and accessibility
WebP does not change accessibility requirements. In the Media Library or Image block, provide meaningful alternative text for informative images. Leave alt text empty only for genuinely decorative images, and do not put captions or essential instructions solely inside the bitmap.
Why WordPress rejects or cannot process a WebP
“Sorry, you are not allowed to upload this file type”
- Confirm the file really ends in
.webpand opens in an image viewer. - Check the WordPress version; native support begins with 5.8.
- Ask the host whether its GD or Imagick build includes WebP support. A security or MIME-type policy can also block uploads.
Upload succeeds but resizing fails
WordPress may accept the original file but fail while creating thumbnail or intermediate sizes. Open the site’s media or server diagnostics and check the image-processing library details. Have the host enable a WebP-capable GD or Imagick build, then retry the upload. Re-uploading alone will not fix a library that cannot decode or encode WebP.

The image is blurry, loses transparency or will not animate
Inspect the source export settings and the generated WordPress size. A lossy conversion or a resizing path that does not preserve alpha or animation can change the result. Keep the original source, generate a suitable static fallback when animation is essential, and test the exact size used in the page.
How much smaller is WebP?
WordPress Core’s 2021 WebP support note reported WebP files were about 30% smaller on average than JPEG or PNG equivalents. A 2022 Core proposal similarly described an approximately 30% average reduction for WebP generated from JPEG at similar visual quality. These are attributed averages, not a guarantee for every image; photographs, graphics, compression settings and dimensions produce different results.

Keeping both original JPEG files and WebP variants also consumes additional storage. The 2022 proposal estimated roughly 70% additional storage in its example, but that was proposal-era context rather than a universal current measurement. Decide whether originals are needed for editing, compatibility or metadata before deleting anything.

The WordPress Core developer note published in July 2026 describes client-side media processing in WordPress 7.1, enabled by default in supporting browsers. The browser can perform compression, resizing, format conversion such as JPEG to WebP, and thumbnail generation before media reaches the server. This does not make every WordPress installation automatically convert every image: the site must run 7.1, the browser must support the feature, and the configured workflow determines what is stored and served.

A practical verification checklist
- The file appears in Media → Library with a WebP extension.
- The intended image size exists and displays on the public page.
- Transparency, animation and visual quality match your requirement.
- Alt text and any caption communicate the image’s purpose.
- The host’s GD or Imagick implementation can process future uploads.
- You know whether the site retains originals and whether any conversion tool creates duplicate variants.
