The best WordPress theme for a church depends less on its demo homepage than on what your congregation needs to publish and who will maintain it. Dedicated church themes can bundle sermon, event, and location tools; general-purpose themes such as Astra and Kadence offer flexible foundations that may need more plugins or setup. Here are five options, what their published features do—and do not—establish, and how to choose without locking church content into the wrong workflow.
Compare the church WordPress theme options
The options below are not a controlled, independent ranking. Their features may live in the theme, an included plugin, a separate plugin, or a page-builder workflow. Treat official directory and vendor descriptions as claims about listed features, not proof of speed, accessibility, or suitability for your church’s specific setup.

| Option | Type and editing approach | Church-specific starting point or content tools | Cost model | Maintenance considerations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astra | General-purpose; supports builders including Spectra, Elementor, and Beaver Builder, according to its WordPress.org listing. | White Oak Media describes church and nonprofit starter layouts; some stronger starter templates are behind Astra Pro. | Free theme with paid upgrades and support; verify which starter layouts and capabilities require a paid tier. | WordPress.org showed version 4.14.0, updated September 24, 2026, and over one million active installations when retrieved. Builder choice can affect volunteer handover. | A church that wants a flexible base and is willing to assemble its pages and church functions. |
| Kadence | General-purpose; its directory listing describes a drag-and-drop header and footer builder, starter templates, and global font and color controls. | White Oak Media describes a church-specific starter homepage and recommends the free version for churches starting out; that is editorial advice, not an independent test. | Free theme with paid upgrades and support. | WordPress.org showed version 1.5.2, updated July 24, 2026, and 500,000+ active installations when retrieved. Check whether the chosen workflow remains manageable for future volunteers. | A congregation seeking a flexible, low-cost start and comfortable building around the block editor and available integrations. |
| Cathedral | Church-specific block theme designed for the Gutenberg/block editor, according to its WordPress.org listing. | Block patterns and WooCommerce support are described on the listing; it is aimed at churches, parishes, and religious organizations. | Listed in the WordPress.org theme directory; check the listing for current terms and details. | The listing showed 200+ active installations when retrieved. That count alone does not establish theme quality or support. Confirm update history and compatibility before adopting it. | A congregation that wants a block-based church design and may also need online sales. |
| ChurchThemes.com: Jubilee, Saved, Maranatha, Exodus, Resurrect | Specialist church themes from one vendor. | The vendor says its Church Content plugin is included with all its themes and handles sermons, events, locations, and other church content. | Paid vendor offering; the site advertises a 45-day money-back guarantee. Confirm current prices, renewal terms, and guarantee conditions with the vendor. | Understand what happens to content and layouts if you change themes or stop using the vendor’s plugin. The vendor’s own feature description is available on its themes and plugins page. | A church prioritizing an integrated church-content workflow and willing to evaluate vendor-specific portability. |
| ThemeForest church themes | Marketplace of individual themes; editing approach and included components vary by product. | The category describes features such as event calendars, sermon archives, and prayer walls; verify whether each is built in, bundled, or supplied by a separate plugin. | Individual one-time product prices vary. At retrieval the category listed Native Church at $89, Real Church at $79, and Nazareth at $69; prices and availability can change. | Check the individual product’s update date, compatibility, support, dependencies, and portability. The category showed 74 themes when retrieved. | A church that wants to compare feature-heavy designs and can inspect each product’s implementation before purchase. |
White Oak Media’s comparison recommends Kadence as its top free option and describes Astra as lightweight and church-starter-friendly. Those are the publisher’s judgments, not independent performance measurements. Astra’s and Kadence’s official listings are here and here; review the current listings rather than assuming retrieved version or installation figures remain current.
Decide what the site must publish
Start with the content your church will actually maintain, not the number of features shown in a demo. Make a short list of recurring needs:
#1 Best Overall
- Enough forms for 1 year for churches of approximately 150 members
- 5 3/16" x 9"
- Includes forms for church receipts, member contributions, and disbursements
- Sermons: audio, video, text, or a combination, plus searchable archives.
- Service times, locations, ministries, and contact information.
- Events and calendars, including registration if needed.
- Online giving, prayer requests, and livestream embeds.
- Multilingual content, if the congregation needs it.
For each item, identify where the functionality lives: in the theme, in a bundled plugin, in a separate plugin or service, or only as sample demo content. A theme’s design can make a page look ready without providing a maintainable system for publishing that content.
Match the editing workflow to volunteer capacity
A beautiful site can become difficult to maintain if only one person understands how its pages were assembled. Ask the person who will handle routine updates to try the actual workflow: edit a service time, add an event, publish a sermon, and replace a homepage image. Determine whether those tasks use WordPress’s native block editor, a third-party builder, or a vendor-specific interface.

- Classic Design: the wordless book utilizes 5 different colors to depict the concept; Yellow symbolizes heaven, black represents sin, red implies the blood shed by Christ due to his death, white symbolizes redemption, and green represents Christ new life
- Small and Portable: the felt book is approximately 1.97 x 2.76 inches/7 x 5 cm and is designed for easy use; Its miniature size can be easily put into a pocket, suitable for presentations and discussions on many occasions
- Sufficient Quantity: the package contains 48 wordless books; These books are suitable for distribution or donation during church events, missionary visits, or group gatherings, so that everyone can have their own copy
- Suitable Material: the Christian books are made of felt, which allows the books to withstand daily routine handling without being easily worn or damaged; You can boldly share your faith without worrying about wear and tear
- Promote Religious Education: the Redemption Book is a good tool for conveying the basic teachings of the faith; Whether donated to churches, missionaries, or personally introduced to the plan of salvation, these books are effective educational resources
- Prefer a workflow that more than one volunteer can learn and document.
- Check whether routine content editing is separate from page-layout editing.
- Ask what happens to page layouts if the church stops paying for a builder or vendor plan.
- Review documentation and support channels, and identify who can take over if the current volunteer leaves.
Check portability before choosing bundled church features
Dedicated church themes and vendor plugins can reduce setup work when their content model fits the church. The trade-off is that sermons, events, or locations may depend on a plugin or theme-specific structure. Before committing, ask the vendor how that content remains available if you switch themes, discontinue a plan, or replace the plugin. Test an export or migration path on a staging site if possible; do not assume that changing the visual theme automatically preserves a usable archive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCalculate total cost and verify the listing
The theme’s initial price is only one part of the cost. Compare the first year and renewal period, including premium theme tiers, page builders, church-content plugins, giving and event services, and support. A free theme may need paid additions; a bundled feature may save setup but tie content to a particular plugin.

Before installing, check the current WordPress.org or vendor product page for update recency, WordPress and PHP requirements, documentation, support arrangements, and the terms of any refund offer. For marketplace products, inspect the individual theme page rather than relying on category-level descriptions. Counts, versions, prices, inventory, and update dates are snapshots that can change.
Assess accessibility and mobile presentation on your own site
A directory listing may describe accessibility readiness or mobile-first design, but that does not demonstrate that your finished church website is accessible or works well on phones. Your selected colors, fonts, images, forms, embedded media, and plugins all affect the experience. Preview important pages on mobile and check that menus, service information, event details, giving flows, and sermon controls are usable. Accessibility and speed should be assessed on the actual configuration, not inferred from a theme description.

- How to walk into church?
- If you go to church, this Brief Book is for you
- This outstanding book is packed with profound reflection on what church is.
Which option should your church shortlist?
- Shortlist Kadence or Astra if you want a general-purpose base, value design flexibility, and can select and maintain the plugins or builder workflow your church needs.
- Shortlist Cathedral if a church-oriented block theme and block-editor customization suit your team; verify its current updates and requirements.
- Shortlist ChurchThemes.com if an integrated church-content plugin for sermons, events, and locations matters more than avoiding vendor-specific dependencies.
- Browse ThemeForest selectively if a particular product’s design and included features match your needs, after checking its individual update history, dependencies, support, and content portability.
Choose the option your next volunteer can safely maintain, not merely the one whose demo looks most complete. For a broader directory of free WordPress themes, WordPress.org’s themes page showed a specific count of 8,655 themes when retrieved in 2026: wordpress.org/themes/. The directory also uses a separate “over 15,000” description on that page, so those figures should not be treated as a single reconciled count.
