SEOPress is the clearest documented choice for editors who want to assign a different Open Graph image to each page and preview the result. Yoast SEO is another strong option, with a documented page-level social image and fallback order. For automatically generated, template-based social graphics, consider ogdynamic. The standalone WordPress.org Open Graph plugin is more suited to automatic image selection or developer customization than to manual per-page editing.
This is a comparison of documented features, not hands-on testing. Plugin interfaces and features can change; check the current plugin documentation and editor interface before choosing.
Which plugin should you choose?
| Plugin or service | Best fit | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| SEOPress | Editors who want to select and preview an image on each entry | Manual social image editing for individual posts, pages, post types, and taxonomy terms; Facebook and X previews in its SEO metabox; global and post-type defaults. |
| Yoast SEO | Sites that want a page-level social image with defined fallbacks | A user-defined Facebook image in the Social tab of the post or page metabox, followed by documented image fallbacks. |
| ogdynamic | Sites that want social images generated from reusable templates and WordPress data | A hosted image-generation workflow with template fields that can map to content such as a post title or featured image. |
| Open Graph | Sites that want automatic image selection, or developers who can customize it | Automatic image selection and developer filters; the WordPress.org listing says it has no admin configuration page. |
| Rank Math | Developers who need image-output customization | The cited developer documentation covers filters for changing image output, defaults, and image sizes. Ordinary editor navigation and current page-level UI are not established here. |
SEOPress: the most direct documented per-page workflow
SEOPress documents manual editing of the social title, description, and image for each post, page, post type, or taxonomy term. Its SEO metabox also offers Facebook and X previews, with checks for image size, dimensions, and format. That combination makes it the most directly documented match here for an editor choosing a unique image and reviewing the card in the editing workflow.
SEOPress also documents default Open Graph images and an option to apply a default when no other image is specified, along with a custom og:image for post-type archive pages. Treat defaults as fallbacks, not as proof that a chosen page image is being replaced or retained: check the generated tags and preview for your site’s configuration.

Yoast SEO: a page-level image with a clear fallback order
Yoast’s technical specification gives this image-selection order:
- A user-defined “Facebook image” in the Social tab of the Yoast metabox.
- A featured image for a page where applicable.
- A prominent image from the content.
- A template-level social default.
- The site’s fallback or default social image.
The specification says the featured-image fallback in that step applies only for posts. If a page displays an unexpected image, check whether its custom social image is set and then trace the applicable fallbacks.
Rank #2
Yoast says Open Graph data is enabled by default. It also warns that another plugin emitting Open Graph data at the same time can lead social networks to show the wrong title, description, or image. If Yoast is your metadata provider, avoid duplicate Open Graph output from another plugin.
ogdynamic: generate social images from templates
ogdynamic is a different kind of workflow from choosing an existing image in a page editor. Its WordPress.org listing describes templates with fields such as title, subtitle, and image that can be mapped to WordPress data, including a post title or featured image. The listing says generated images are 1200×630 pixels and hosted on its servers, and that an account is required.
The listing says it can work alongside named SEO plugins and prevents duplicate og:image output when it generates an image. Those are vendor/listing claims, not independently tested compatibility results. Its stated 1200×630 size is not a universal current requirement for every social platform.
Open Graph and Rank Math: better suited to developer-led customization
Open Graph
The WordPress.org Open Graph plugin listing says it chooses the featured image first, then images in the content and attached images, with the site icon, custom logo, or header image as fallbacks. It says there is no admin page for configuration and that customization uses filters. That may work for automatic selection or a developer-maintained setup, but it is less direct for an editor who needs a custom-image field on each page.
Rank #4
Rank Math
The cited Rank Math documentation establishes developer filters for changing image output, suppressing a default or content-derived image, and choosing image sizes. It does not establish the current editor workflow, plan restrictions, or ordinary page-level UI. Confirm those in current user-facing documentation or the plugin itself rather than assuming the developer hooks describe what editors see.
How to choose for your WordPress site
- Need editors to set a unique image? Favor a plugin that explicitly documents a page-level field. SEOPress and Yoast both document one.
- Need predictable behavior when the field is empty? Compare fallback precedence. Yoast documents its hierarchy; SEOPress documents global and post-type defaults.
- Need to check a card while editing? SEOPress documents Facebook and X previews in its SEO metabox.
- Need branded graphics generated from content? Consider ogdynamic’s template-based hosted workflow rather than treating it as a manual image field.
- Need custom logic maintained by a developer? The Open Graph plugin and Rank Math documentation describe filter-based options, but confirm that their current behavior fits your implementation.
- Already have an SEO plugin? Check which plugin emits Open Graph tags before adding another. Duplicate output can confuse social preview selection.
Set an image and verify the output
- Choose one plugin or service to produce Open Graph metadata for the page. Disable or configure other emitters so they do not output competing tags.
- Open the target post or page in WordPress and use the chosen plugin’s documented social-image control. In Yoast, the documented location is the Social tab of the Yoast metabox. SEOPress documents editing the image in its SEO metabox.
- Choose the page-specific image when the page needs a distinct share card. Configure global or post-type defaults for entries without a specific image.
- Review the plugin preview if available, then inspect the live page’s generated Open Graph metadata. A preview in the editor is useful, but checking the live output can reveal conflicts or configuration differences.
- If a social platform still shows an older or unexpected card, distinguish the live page metadata from the platform’s fetched preview. Platforms may cache previews; use that platform’s current refresh procedure if needed.
ScreenshotNeo as a related tool for checking page appearance
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a WordPress plugin for setting Open Graph metadata. It can capture a page’s rendered appearance, which is useful for checking what the page itself looks like; it does not replace inspecting the Open Graph tags or a social network’s fetched card. Its clean-shot workflow removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and its response identifies page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools.
To try it, make a GET request with the target URL and your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting an Open Graph image change the page’s featured image?
Not necessarily. Social-image fields and featured images are distinct inputs; a plugin may use the featured image as a fallback when no social image is set.
Why can a social network show a different image from the one I selected?
Possible causes include fallback precedence, duplicate Open Graph tags, differences between editor preview and live page output, or a cached platform preview.

Is 1200×630 required for every Open Graph image?
No universal requirement is established here. That is the size ogdynamic says it generates, not a confirmed rule for every platform.
