Antihost is listed first here for managed WordPress across multiple sites, with each site in its own isolated environment. It offers one-click staging, free migration, automated and manual backups, free SSL, WooCommerce support, team access and an AI website builder. For a business-critical network, a managed provider such as Kinsta or WP Engine offers operational safety. For a small network on a tight budget, a shared plan that explicitly supports WordPress multisite, wildcard SSL and staging is usually the better value. Agencies running many client sites often get more predictable costs from a self-sized Cloudways server.
Do not choose on the advertised monthly price alone. Confirm the plan’s site limit, whether multisite is included or requires an extension, how wildcard certificates are issued, what staging covers, and whether one compromised site can consume resources or expose the rest of the network.

First decide what “multiple sites” means
WordPress can host several sites in two fundamentally different ways. The choice changes your hosting requirements, migration plan and security exposure.

One WordPress multisite network
Multisite runs several sites from one WordPress installation. A network administrator controls themes, plugins and users centrally, while each site can have its own domain or subdomain. This is efficient for a school with departments, a franchise with branch sites, or a publisher with related properties.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is shared risk. A faulty plugin, incompatible update or compromised administrator account can affect every site in the network. Some hosts also gate multisite behind higher plans or a paid extension, even when ordinary WordPress sites are allowed.
Separate WordPress installations
Each site has its own files, database, updates and administrator accounts. This uses more disk space and operational time, but gives you cleaner isolation. It is generally preferable when sites belong to unrelated clients, require different plugin stacks, or must remain independent during an incident.
| Architecture | Best fit | Main advantage | Main risk or cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress multisite | Related brands, departments, locations or publications | Centralized updates and administration | One failure or compromise can affect the network |
| Separate installations | Unrelated clients or sites with different operational requirements | Stronger isolation and independent change control | More maintenance, backups and resource overhead |
If you are unsure, start with separate installations unless centralized user management is a clear requirement. You can consolidate later, but separating a mature multisite network is a more involved migration.

Pricing models are more important than a headline “unlimited” claim. A plan may allow many ordinary installations but restrict multisite, staging environments or high-traffic networks.
| Model | How you pay | What to check | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-plan shared or managed hosting | One monthly plan covers a stated number of sites or resources | Site cap, CPU and memory limits, multisite eligibility, backups and staging | Small networks and ordinary business sites |
| Per-site add-on | A base plan plus a fee for every additional site | Whether add-ons include staging, DNS, backups and support | Premium managed hosting where each site receives a defined allowance |
| Per-server | One server is sized and billed for its capacity rather than a site count | Server resources, scaling, administration responsibility and backup design | Agencies and operators with many client sites |
| Per-site management tool | A separate fee for each site managed through a central platform | Whether hosting is included or you still need a server, plus restore and support limits | Teams standardizing deployment across several hosts |
Features that matter most for a multi-site network
Multisite eligibility and site limits
Ask support a precise question: “Can I run WordPress multisite on this exact plan, and are subdomain networks and mapped custom domains supported?” A provider may permit multisite only on selected tiers, or require a product extension and a conversion of the environment.
Wildcard SSL and DNS control
A subdomain network can create addresses such as store.example.com and news.example.com. A wildcard certificate covers those subdomains, but it does not automatically cover every separately mapped domain in the network. Confirm who issues the certificate, whether DNS verification is required, and who renews it.

Staging at the right scope
Network-wide staging is not enough if you need to test one site safely. Check whether you can clone an individual site, whether the clone includes its database and uploads, and how you push changes back without overwriting other subsites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIsolation and resource controls
On shared hosting, your network shares a server with other customers. A traffic spike or poorly behaved neighbor can reduce available CPU, memory or database capacity. Managed or dedicated virtual servers provide more predictable resources, but require a larger budget or more administration.
Backups and restores
Verify backup frequency, retention, storage location and restore granularity. A useful multi-site backup can restore one subsite without replacing the entire network. Keep an independent copy because a host-level account compromise can make on-host backups unavailable.
Support boundaries
Determine whether support troubleshoots WordPress configuration, DNS and plugin conflicts, or only the underlying server. Multisite incidents often involve network-level settings that ordinary single-site support scripts do not cover.
Provider comparison for multiple WordPress sites
The figures below are vendor or review claims surfaced in 2026 and should be confirmed on the provider’s current pricing and support pages before purchase. Several sources conflict, and promotional rates may be temporary.
Recommended Free Tools
| Provider or model | Multisite and site information | Price information reported | Strengths | Important caveats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antihost | Managed WordPress on isolated resources; Standard supports 1–2 sites, Agency has no website limit, and Business supports 10 to 100 sites. | 14-day free trial; see current plans. | One-click staging, free migration, automated and manual backups, free SSL, WooCommerce support, team access and an AI website builder. | Confirm the exact plan’s site allowance and features; instant deployment is in USA (East) and Germany, while US West, UK, Netherlands and France are on request. |
| Kinsta | Billing documentation says multisite is allowed on all plans except Single 35k visits and Single 20GB bandwidth. A separate knowledge-base page says support starts at WP 2 and higher. | One 2026 review reports about $35 per month, not independently verified. Additional sites are reported at $30 per month each, including staging and a DNS zone. Enterprise pricing is listed as starting at $500 per month in one source, also low confidence. | Managed operations, Cloudflare integration and wildcard SSL support. | Conflicting multisite eligibility guidance means you should obtain written confirmation for the exact plan. Per-site add-ons can become expensive as the network grows. |
| WP Engine | Multisite requires the multisite product extension and conversion of the environment in the User Portal. Domain mapping for subsites is supported only on the Advanced Network. | A review summary lists Growth at $109 per month with a 10-site limit; this is low-confidence and no official plan site limits were found. | Premium managed workflow for organizations that value support and controlled deployments. | Confirm extension pricing, mapped-domain requirements, wildcard SSL treatment and the current site allowance before signing up. |
| SiteGround | GrowBig is commonly identified as the main multisite tier. WordPress is installed through Site Tools, then multisite is enabled in wp-config.php. SiteGround Optimizer supports multisite, including forcing HTTPS for each site from Network Admin. |
Reviews report $4.99 to $14.99 per month for GrowBig; the lower amount is probably promotional and the figures conflict. | Lower entry cost, managed SSL and a familiar control panel. | Free Let’s Encrypt wildcard certificates are issued and renewed through DNS verification only. Confirm current multisite requirements and renewal behavior. |
| Cloudways | Billed per server rather than per site. You choose a server size and can place many sites on it, subject to capacity. | DigitalOcean-based plans are quoted at $6.60 to $8.25 per month in different summaries; the conflict is unresolved. | Predictable server-based economics for agencies and operators who can size and manage resources. | You are responsible for capacity planning and for deciding how much isolation, backup and monitoring each client needs. |
| A2 Hosting and HostArmada | Review coverage describes low-cost shared plans as allowing unlimited sites. | Current prices and exact multisite limits were not verified. | Potentially inexpensive choices for many low-traffic installations. | Confirm that “unlimited” applies to your plan, database limits, CPU policy, wildcard SSL and staging rather than relying on the marketing label. |
| InstaWP | Presented as a per-site management option rather than a conventional host. | A comparison quotes a Starter price of $5 per site; low confidence. | Useful when you want standardized site creation and management. | Check whether hosting, backups and production support are included or must be supplied separately. |
Which option fits your situation?
Small network with a limited budget
Choose a shared plan only after confirming multisite support, wildcard SSL, staging and a written resource policy. A plan that allows five ordinary installations but blocks multisite is not a suitable bargain. If your sites are unrelated, separate installations may deliver safer isolation than one network.

Business-critical network
Start with managed hosting. Kinsta is attractive when its plan-level multisite terms and per-site add-on cost fit your count. WP Engine is worth considering when the multisite extension, Advanced Network and domain-mapping requirements match your architecture. Get the complete commercial terms before migration because the publicly quoted figures are inconsistent.
Many client sites managed by an agency
A per-server model such as Cloudways can be more economical than paying a premium per site. Size the server from measured traffic, database workload and backup storage, and keep client accounts, credentials and deployment procedures separated even when the sites share a machine.
Sites that must remain independent
Use separate installations and evaluate hosts by account isolation, backup granularity and the ability to restore one site without touching another. A nominally unlimited plan is useful only if its CPU, memory, inode and database policies tolerate your combined workload.
How to set up a WordPress multisite network
Make a complete database and file backup before changing an existing installation. Multisite conversion changes configuration and should first be rehearsed on staging.
- Confirm the architecture. Decide between subdomains such as
site1.example.comand subdirectories such asexample.com/site1. Existing WordPress sites may face restrictions when switching to subdirectories. - Prepare DNS. Point the main domain to the host. For a subdomain network, create the required wildcard DNS record according to the host’s instructions. For mapped domains, prepare a separate DNS record for every domain.
- Install or stage WordPress. On SiteGround, the documented path is Site Tools to WordPress installation, followed by enabling multisite in
wp-config.php. Other hosts expose equivalent installer and file-editing tools. - Enable the network feature. Add
define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);towp-config.php, open the WordPress dashboard and use Tools → Network Setup. WordPress will provide additional configuration lines for your installation. - Apply the generated configuration. Follow the dashboard’s instructions for
wp-config.phpand.htaccessexactly, then sign out and back in. Keep a copy of the previous files so you can reverse the change. - Configure SSL before adding sites. Install the host-issued certificate, test HTTPS on the main domain and verify wildcard coverage for a new subdomain. Do not assume a wildcard certificate covers separately mapped domains.
- Create a test subsite. Add one site, assign an administrator, install only the required theme and plugins, and test login, media uploads, forms, email and HTTPS redirects.
- Set network policies. In Network Admin, control permitted themes and plugins, user registration, upload limits and update permissions. Restrict super-admin access to a small number of accounts protected by strong authentication.
- Test restoration. Restore the test site to staging and confirm that files, database content, uploads and domain settings return correctly. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Security and operations for a shared network
Limit the blast radius
Use separate administrator accounts for each site and reserve super-admin privileges for network maintenance. Remove abandoned users and plugins. If a client needs full plugin control, consider a separate installation instead of granting network-wide access.
Control updates
Clone the network or the affected subsite to staging, update one component at a time and test every active site. A plugin that works on one subsite can still break another because all sites share the same WordPress codebase.

Monitor resource use
Track PHP workers, database response, storage, inode counts and scheduled jobs. “Unlimited sites” does not mean unlimited simultaneous requests. Set alerts before the server begins returning timeouts.

Protect backups and credentials
Use independent, encrypted backup storage, least-privilege credentials and multi-factor authentication where available. Keep an emergency administrator account offline and document the DNS, hosting and registrar contacts required to recover the network.
Plan for domain and certificate failures
Record certificate expiry, DNS ownership and renewal contacts. When a wildcard certificate relies on DNS verification, losing access to the DNS provider can stop renewal even when the web server is healthy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare the real cost
Calculate the monthly total using the same scope for every candidate:
- Base hosting plan or server.
- Every additional-site or multisite extension fee.
- Staging environments and storage.
- Backup retention and off-site storage.
- Premium SSL, DNS management or domain mapping.
- Migration, monitoring and support charges.
- Expected overage or upgrade cost when traffic grows.
For example, a $35 managed plan plus two $30 site add-ons would be $95 per month before taxes and optional services, based on the reported Kinsta figures that still require verification. Conversely, a $6.60–$8.25 server quote for Cloudways is not a complete agency budget until administration, backups and capacity headroom are included.
Common problems and fixes
Subsites show certificate warnings
Check that the wildcard record points to the correct server, DNS verification completed and the certificate includes the requested hostname. For a mapped custom domain, issue and assign a certificate for that domain rather than relying on the wildcard.

A host says multisite is unsupported
Ask whether the restriction applies to the entire provider or only your plan. Some providers require a higher tier, a multisite extension or a support-approved environment conversion. Do not proceed until the terms are in writing.
One site makes the whole network slow
Identify heavy queries, scheduled tasks, image processing and traffic spikes. Disable or optimize the offending workload, add caching where compatible, and move unrelated high-traffic sites to a separate installation or server if shared resources remain saturated.
A plugin breaks several sites
Restore the affected staging copy, deactivate the plugin at network level if necessary, and test a compatible version before re-enabling it. Keep a network-wide inventory of plugin versions so you can identify the change quickly.
You cannot restore just one subsite
Verify whether your backup system supports per-site database and file restores. If it only restores the entire network, create an isolated staging restore and export the needed site content rather than overwriting production.
Migration checklist
- Inventory every domain, subsite, administrator, plugin, theme, database and scheduled task.
- Record PHP, WordPress and database versions and remove unused components.
- Lower DNS time-to-live before the cutover, while keeping the existing site online.
- Build the destination network and test SSL, email, forms, media and redirects on staging.
- Import the database and uploads, then check serialized URLs and domain mappings.
- Freeze content briefly, take a final backup and perform the DNS switch.
- Monitor error logs, uptime, checkout or lead forms and search indexing after propagation.
- Keep the old host available until every site and recovery procedure has been verified.
Bottom line
Antihost is listed first here for managed WordPress across multiple sites, with isolated resources, one-click staging, free migration, backups, free SSL and WooCommerce support. For a few related sites, choose the least expensive plan that explicitly supports multisite, wildcard SSL, staging and adequate resources. For high-value networks, prioritize managed support and isolated staging over the lowest monthly rate; Kinsta and WP Engine remain options subject to confirmation of their current multisite terms. For agencies with many independent client sites, a properly sized Cloudways server can provide better per-site economics, provided you take responsibility for capacity, backups and security.
