The practical approach is to choose a block theme whose templates, patterns, styles and editing workflow match your site, then test it before changing a live design. Twenty Twenty-Five is the clearest documented starting point because WordPress shipped it as the default theme for WordPress 6.7, but that historical status does not make it the newest or best option in September 2026.
What “Full Site Editing” means in WordPress
WordPress now generally calls Full Site Editing themes block themes. They use blocks not only for post and page content, but also for site-wide areas such as headers, footers, navigation and templates. When a block theme is active, the Site Editor becomes the place to edit those areas.
In WordPress versions above 5.9, the developer handbook identifies block-format templates as the defining implementation feature for this approach. Block themes also replace many classic-theme widget controls with blocks. The Customizer is not available by default when a block theme is active, so the editing experience is materially different from a traditional theme.
That does not mean every block theme gives you the same level of control. Available templates, style variations, patterns and navigation arrangements depend on the individual theme.

- Templates: change layouts used by posts, pages, archives, search results and other content types when the theme provides those templates.
- Template parts: edit reusable site areas such as the header, footer and sidebar.
- Navigation: manage menus with the Navigation block rather than relying on a classic menu screen alone.
- Styles: adjust site-wide typography, colors, spacing and other design settings exposed by the theme.
- Patterns: insert prebuilt sections and layouts supplied by the theme or created for the site.
The exact controls and starting layouts vary. A theme may expose many patterns but few templates, or provide a restrained design with fewer choices. Evaluate the actual Site Editor experience instead of assuming that the phrase “full site editing” describes an identical feature set across themes.
How to find FSE themes in WordPress
- Open the official WordPress.org Theme Directory.
- Select the Block Themes filter. WordPress also provides feature filters for narrowing the results.
- Use the directory’s preview option on candidates that appear suitable.
- Inspect the preview for the pages your site needs: homepage, posts, pages, archives, search, navigation, header and footer.
- Install a candidate on a staging or test site before replacing the design of a production site.
A preview is more useful than a screenshot because it lets you judge the relationship between the theme’s layouts and your own content. It can also reveal whether the visual style is appropriate for your site type before you commit to customization.
The strongest documented starting point: Twenty Twenty-Five
WordPress documents Twenty Twenty-Five as the default theme for WordPress 6.7. Its documentation describes support for the Site Editor, Styles, templates and patterns, and lists minimum requirements of WordPress 6.7 and PHP 7.2.
Rank #2
Those requirements must be treated as a compatibility check, not as a promise that every hosting environment or plugin combination will behave identically. Confirm your installed WordPress and PHP versions before activation, and test the theme with the plugins and content that matter to your site.
Twenty Twenty-Five’s default-theme designation is tied to the WordPress 6.7 release. It is historical context, not proof that it is the newest or objectively best theme in September 2026.
What Twenty Twenty-Three tells you about historical theme claims
WordPress describes Twenty Twenty-Three as the default theme for WordPress 6.1 and as a minimalist block theme. Its documentation notes ten community-submitted style variations. That information explains the theme’s original positioning; it should not be read as evidence that it belongs at the top of a current 2026 shortlist.
Rank #3
Choose by site type and editing comfort
| Site situation | What to inspect in the preview | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Blog or publication | Post, archive, category and search templates; readable typography; author and metadata patterns | Most visitors enter through posts or archives, so those templates need to fit your content volume. |
| Business or service site | Landing-page patterns, clear navigation, page templates and prominent call-to-action areas | The theme should make key pages easy to assemble without rebuilding the header and footer repeatedly. |
| Portfolio or creative site | Gallery or grid patterns, flexible page layouts and style variations | Visual presentation may matter more than a large set of editorial templates. |
| WooCommerce store | Store-specific templates and patterns supplied by the theme and compatible with your WooCommerce setup | A general-purpose block theme is not automatically a complete store design. |
| Site maintained by a non-developer | Understandable Site Editor controls, sensible defaults and reusable patterns | More theoretical flexibility is not helpful if the maintainer cannot safely update the site. |
These are evaluation axes, not an official WordPress scoring system. Weight them according to the people who will actually maintain the site.
A practical selection checklist
1. Confirm software compatibility
Check the theme’s stated WordPress and PHP requirements against your installation. For Twenty Twenty-Five, the documented minimums are WordPress 6.7 and PHP 7.2.

Write down the page types your site uses, then verify that the candidate supplies suitable templates or that you are prepared to create them in the Site Editor.

3. Test site-wide editing
Open the header, footer and navigation in the Site Editor. Check whether the controls are understandable to the person responsible for future updates.
4. Compare styles and patterns
Try the available style variations and insert representative patterns using your own text and images. A demo that looks good with placeholder content may not suit your real content.
5. Test on staging
Use a staging or test installation before switching a live site. Check responsive layouts, menus, forms, plugin output, custom post types and any template overrides that your current theme or plugins depend on.
Best Value
6. Record what the theme does not provide
Note missing templates, blocks or design controls. A short list of gaps is more useful than choosing a theme solely because its demo homepage looks attractive.

A block theme is the better fit when you want to edit headers, footers, navigation and templates with the same block-based system used for page content. A classic theme may remain more comfortable if your team depends on the Customizer, widgets or a workflow built around classic theme settings.
The choice is especially consequential for an existing site. Switching themes can change template structure and styling even when your content remains intact. For a WooCommerce site, verify the theme’s store templates and test the checkout, cart, product and account experiences rather than assuming that any block theme is store-ready.
What this guide can—and cannot—rank
The available WordPress documentation supports a criteria-based selection guide, not a defensible market-wide top-ten ranking. It does not establish comparable 2026 measurements for speed, accessibility scores, conversions, user satisfaction, support quality or maintenance across third-party themes. Treat lists that present a single “best” winner without comparable evidence cautiously.

Theme availability, requirements and maintenance can change after publication. Recheck the live directory entry and the theme’s own documentation when you are ready to install.
Bottom line
Start with the WordPress.org Block Themes filter, preview candidates using the pages your site actually needs, verify WordPress and PHP requirements, and test the winner on staging. Twenty Twenty-Five is a well-documented baseline for WordPress 6.7 and later environments that meet its PHP 7.2 minimum, but the right 2026 choice is the theme whose templates, patterns, styles and Site Editor workflow fit your site—not a universal ranking.
