To make a print-on-demand (POD) shop in WordPress, use self-hosted WordPress for the website, WooCommerce for the storefront and checkout, and a POD provider such as Printful to make and ship customized physical products. You connect the provider to WooCommerce, create and submit products, configure store settings, then test a complete order before opening sales.
What you need before you start
A POD shop has three parts: your WordPress site, WooCommerce’s store and checkout, and a fulfillment provider that produces and ships the goods when customers order. The provider connection does not build the entire shop for you: you still create product listings, set retail prices, choose which destinations to serve, and configure payments, shipping, taxes, and customer notifications.
The WooCommerce store-building guide describes installing WordPress on a web host before adding WooCommerce. This walkthrough follows that self-hosted setup; WordPress.com plans may have different commerce and plugin requirements, so check the plan’s current support rather than assuming it works identically. WooCommerce’s online-store guide covers the hosted WordPress route.
Set up WooCommerce
Install WooCommerce on your WordPress site and follow its setup wizard. It collects store information and guides you through core tasks such as adding products, configuring payments, choosing tax and shipping approaches, and customizing the storefront. Payment options depend in part on your country and the information supplied during setup.

The wizard’s checklist is a useful working list, not a substitute for checking your own settings. Keep track of these items as you configure the store:
- Store details and the storefront presentation customers will see.
- At least one product with a clear name, description, price, and visibility setting.
- A payment method configured for your business and tested at checkout.
- Shipping zones and methods that return the rates you intend for your actual destinations.
- A tax approach appropriate to your circumstances and jurisdictions.
See WooCommerce’s setup wizard documentation for its current checklist. Tax duties are jurisdiction- and seller-specific; neither a POD provider nor a general setup guide can determine your obligations without those details.
Connect Printful to WooCommerce
Printful is one documented example, not the only possible POD provider. In WooCommerce’s documented flow, connect it from the WordPress dashboard by opening the Printful tab, clicking Connect, and approving the integration. Exact dashboard labels can change. Once connected, a sale in the WooCommerce store can be imported to Printful for fulfillment; Printful describes producing, packaging, and shipping the products under the merchant’s brand. See the Printful integration guide.

If the connection reports an incorrect URL, WooCommerce’s Printful documentation suggests checking Stores > Edit and confirming that the store URL is the site domain, not a subdirectory such as /store or /shop. That is a documented cause for this URL error, not a universal explanation for every failed connection.

Connecting Printful and publishing a product are separate tasks. After authorization, you still need to choose the item and variants, prepare the artwork and listing, set the retail price, and submit the product to WooCommerce.
- Open the product creator. In Printful, the documented routes are Stores > your WooCommerce store > Add product, or My products > Published > your store > Create product. Labels may vary as the dashboard changes.
- Choose the product and variants. Select a category and model, then choose available colors and sizes for the listing.
- Prepare the design. Upload your artwork and position it on the product. Review the available mockup images and choose the ones that represent the listing well.
- Write the listing. Add a customer-facing title and description, set the retail price, and choose whether the item should be visible in your store.
- Submit it to WooCommerce. After submission, look in WooCommerce’s Products area to confirm the listing appeared and its details are correct.
Printful’s instructions describe this workflow in its product configuration and sync guide. Its integration skips virtual or downloadable WooCommerce items because Printful fulfills physical products that require shipping.

Set a price that accounts for more than production
The difference between the retail price and the provider’s fulfillment price is not automatically your net profit. Printful notes that the displayed difference does not necessarily include shipping, taxes, platform fees, or other costs. A safer way to set a price is to make a product-by-product worksheet before publishing:
- Retail price charged for the item.
- Provider’s fulfillment charge for the chosen product and variants.
- Shipping cost and whether it is charged to the customer or absorbed by you.
- Payment processing, platform, and other applicable operating costs.
- Taxes or other amounts that affect what you retain, based on your situation.
Use the resulting estimate to decide whether the price and shipping presentation make sense; it is not a guaranteed margin. Product costs, shipping, tax treatment, and payment costs depend on the provider, product, destination, and your setup.

Before taking orders, confirm that the choices made during setup work together with the POD provider’s fulfillment arrangement. WooCommerce lets you configure shipping zones and methods, but you must check the rates and destinations you actually intend to offer. Do not assume that a provider’s available destinations, charges, or delivery estimates are identical for every product or location.

Choose a tax approach appropriate to your business and the places where you sell. WooCommerce’s setup materials describe manual and automated configuration paths, but they do not establish what any particular seller owes. For an individual obligation, check the relevant tax authority or consult a qualified professional.
Confirm that your payment option is available to your business and that customers receive the expected order and payment emails. The WooCommerce checklist specifically calls for testing an order, payment, and email notifications before launch. Its setup documentation explains the launch checks.

Place an end-to-end test order and inspect the experience as a customer would. Use WooCommerce’s launch checklist to verify the order, payment, and email notifications, and confirm the result in your store and connected fulfillment workflow. Check that the product page, selected variants, checkout charges, and confirmation messages match what you intended. If something is wrong, correct the relevant product or store setting and repeat the test before promoting the shop.

The WordPress.org listing for the Printful Integration for WooCommerce plugin describes installing and activating the plugin, connecting it or adding an API key, and configuring Printful shipping and applicable tax settings. It also advertises discounted samples; availability and discount terms can change, so verify them with Printful rather than treating a discount as guaranteed. A sample can help you inspect a product before selling it.
Choosing a POD provider
This walkthrough documents Printful’s connection and product workflow; it is not a ranking of providers. Compare alternatives using criteria that affect the actual offer you can make to customers:
- Catalog range, product quality, and available variants.
- How the WooCommerce integration connects and syncs listings and orders.
- Product cost plus shipping and other costs that contribute to total cost.
- Shipping destinations, rates, and delivery estimates for your products.
- Sample availability and the ability to check quality.
- Branding and packaging options, plus support and how order problems are handled.
Verify current catalog, costs, coverage, delivery estimates, and policies directly with each provider before deciding. Those details can vary by product and destination.
Quick Recap
