Jetpack AI, WordPress.com’s built-in AI Assistant, the official WordPress AI plugin, and AI Engine cover different workflows; the available feature information does not establish one as the best-performing option overall.
Choose a plugin by the task you need done
“AI plugin” is a broad label, not a single product category. The WordPress.org AI tag includes site-building tools, SEO features, chatbot frameworks, provider connectors, and other products. Its AI tag page is useful for discovery, but it is not a tested ranking.

- Writing and editing: Look for drafting, rewriting, proofreading, and content-formatting features in the editor you actually use.
- Visitor support: Check what content a chatbot can use, how it handles questions beyond that material, and whether you can control its access.
- Provider connection: Confirm which AI services the plugin supports, whether you must supply an API key, and how provider usage is billed.
- Agent actions: If an AI agent may update posts or interact with site content, check which actions and permissions are available and what approval controls exist.
- Media or SEO: Verify the particular image, media, or SEO function you need instead of assuming it is included because a plugin uses AI.
Before comparing products, write down one representative task and a success measure—for example, how much editing a draft needs, whether answers stay grounded in approved site material, or whether a post update requires human approval.
How the main WordPress AI options differ
| Option | Best fit | Setup and availability | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jetpack AI | Writing and editing in WordPress, with content and media generation features described on its product page | A Jetpack plugin workflow; the product page describes a limited free allowance and a paid plan | Current plan limits, billing, editor compatibility, and whether the features you need are available on your site |
| WordPress.com AI Assistant | Assistance within the WordPress.com site editor and Media Library | WordPress.com announced opt-in availability for eligible Business or Commerce plan sites at no extra cost at the time of its announcement | Current plan eligibility, opt-in status, and feature availability; this is not a universal feature of self-hosted WordPress |
| Official WordPress AI plugin | Trying WordPress AI features and experiments, including content assistance, with a configured provider | The listing says users need an API key for a configured provider connector, such as OpenAI, Google AI, or Anthropic | Provider setup, API billing, the current scope of features, and compatibility with your site |
| AI Engine | A broader set of described tools, including chatbots, content generation, provider connections, and MCP capabilities | The listing instructs users to obtain a key from OpenAI or another preferred provider and configure it in plugin settings | Which features are in the free core plugin versus paid features, plus permissions and provider costs |
The table summarizes product and platform descriptions, not independently measured quality or performance. Plugin catalogs, features, plans, quotas, and platform eligibility change; confirm current details on the linked official pages before installing or budgeting.
#1 Best Overall
Jetpack AI: editor-focused assistance
Jetpack’s product page describes prompt-based generation of text, images, tables, and lists, as well as tone adjustment, proofreading, and title and summary generation. It also displays a limited free allowance and a paid plan; confirm the current quota, billing terms, and renewal price directly with Jetpack before relying on them. The Jetpack WordPress.org listing and changelog includes recent AI development, including an AI Hub, feature controls, MCP setup, and agent-related settings. A changelog entry does not establish that every feature is available on every plan or site.
WordPress.com AI Assistant: a hosted-platform feature
WordPress.com announced its AI Assistant on February 17, 2026, and updated the announcement on April 8, 2026. At that time, it said eligible sites on Business or Commerce plans could opt in at no extra cost, with the assistant working in the site editor and Media Library. Check the WordPress.com announcement for current eligibility; its stated availability is specific to WordPress.com and should not be treated as a feature included with every self-hosted WordPress installation.
The official WordPress AI plugin: connect a provider
The official AI plugin listing describes AI features and experiments, including content assistance. It says a configured AI Connector and provider API key are currently needed. The Learn WordPress setup lesson walks through installation and connecting a provider. Check the current listing and provider terms to understand what is available and how requests may be billed.

The AI Engine listing describes chatbots, content and media tools, provider connections, and MCP capabilities. That breadth may suit a site that needs more than editor assistance, but a feature list alone does not show how well a tool handles your content or what each feature costs. Check which functions are included in the free core plugin, what requires a paid feature, and what access the plugin needs.

Understand MCP before connecting an AI agent
MCP is an integration approach for connecting AI agents to tools and services. It is a different use case from asking an assistant to draft or revise text in an editor: an agent connection may expose site data or actions, depending on the integration and permissions.
WordPress.com’s MCP tools for AI agents support page, reviewed October 6, 2026, says agents such as Claude or ChatGPT can connect to WordPress.com accounts. It also says MCP is available on self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack with a Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete plan. These requirements are specific to the documented WordPress.com and Jetpack connection; verify current plan and capability details before enabling it.

- Check which site information an agent can read and which actions it can take.
- Limit access to the users and roles that need it, and look for approval controls before changes go live.
- Test on a staging site with non-critical content before connecting an agent to a production site.
Check compatibility, costs, and data handling
A plugin’s headline features do not tell you whether it fits your WordPress setup. Before installation, verify its current compatibility with your WordPress version, editor, theme, page builder, WooCommerce setup, and other active plugins. Check multisite support separately if your site uses it.
- Provider and billing: Find out whether AI usage is included in a plugin or hosting plan, requires a separate subscription, or is billed through a provider API key. Account for repeated requests, not just setup.
- Data handling: Read current vendor and provider documentation to learn what prompts and site content are sent, how they are retained, and who can access them. Do not infer privacy protections from an AI label.
- Access and roles: For chatbots and agents, establish which content, settings, or commerce functions are exposed and who can trigger actions.
- Support and total cost: Include any required plugin upgrade, provider usage, hosting-plan eligibility, and support terms when comparing options.
Run a small trial before choosing
- Pick one real task. Use a representative draft, visitor question, or proposed post update, and define what a good result looks like.
- Check the current listing and setup. Confirm compatibility, required provider connections, feature availability, and billing before enabling the plugin.
- Test on staging. Use a copy of the site for changes that could affect published content, user access, or commerce.
- Review the result yourself. Check factual errors, editing effort, accessibility, and whether the result fits your site’s tone and workflow.
- Assess the full cost and control model. Include API or plan costs, permissions, and the steps needed to review or reverse an action.
Feature descriptions can help narrow the shortlist, but they do not establish that one plugin produces more accurate content, improves search rankings, or saves more time than another. Choose based on the workflow you tested and the controls and costs your site requires.
