If you would rather make an HTTP request than manage a browser, choose a hosted screenshot API. Among the hosted options here, ScreenshotNeo is the first one to try: it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and charges only for clean shots.
There is no universal winner. The right fit depends on how much control you need over the browser, whether you want to operate its environment, and how the screenshot fits into your application.
Why look beyond wkhtmltoimage?
The wkhtmltopdf project status page describes the Qt/WebKit foundation as old: it says Qt 4 has not been supported since 2015 and the bundled WebKit had not been updated since 2012. Those are historical statements on the project page, not a fresh audit of every package or fork. The page also cautions against using wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML unless it is sanitized.

For pages that rely on dynamic JavaScript, the project’s maintainer, Ashish Kulkarni, advises: “If you’re using it to convert a site which uses dynamic JS, consider using puppeteer or one of the many wrappers it has.” Treat that as maintainer guidance on the project status page, rather than a new announcement.
Which alternative fits your screenshot workflow?
| Option | Best fit | What you take on |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Screenshots within a larger automation flow, visual tests, or captures that need viewport, element, or full-page control. | You operate the automation and browser environment. For meaningful visual comparisons, keep the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware and headless configuration consistent; rendering may vary across environments. |
| Puppeteer | JavaScript applications that fit Puppeteer’s browser automation API, including page and element screenshots. | You write and run the browser automation. Puppeteer’s official overview covers Chrome and Firefox, so it should not be described as Chromium-only. |
| ScreenshotNeo | A URL-to-image or PDF request workflow, or screenshot capture by an AI agent using MCP. | You use an API key and choose request options; the provider handles the browser capture. It offers PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF output, plus options for waits, viewport, full-page capture and more. See ScreenshotNeo. |
| Browserless screenshot API | URL-to-image or HTML-to-image capture through an endpoint instead of running browser instances in your application. | Check the provider’s current limits, authentication, wait behavior and request options. Its screenshot endpoint documents PNG, JPEG and WebP output and Puppeteer-style options. |
| ScreenshotOne API | An HTTP request workflow for returning screenshots and setting capture options. | Use HTTPS: its documentation warns that HTTP does not encrypt API keys, authorization headers, cookies or other sensitive request data in transit. |
Playwright: choose it for control and repeatable visual workflows
Playwright supports viewport, element and full-page screenshots, and can be used in visual comparison workflows. It is a good fit when a capture is part of a test or automation sequence—for example, navigating, interacting with a page, and then saving a specific region. The trade-off is that your team owns the automation runtime and needs a stable environment for comparisons.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
A minimal JavaScript example using Playwright’s page screenshot API:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Replace the URL and output path for your case. For a stable visual baseline, pin and reuse the same browser/runtime setup rather than comparing captures from different environments. A network-idle wait is not a universal guarantee that a site has finished rendering; pages with continuing requests or delayed content may need a more specific wait or interaction.
Puppeteer: choose it when its API suits your JavaScript app
Puppeteer makes screenshots part of code-driven browser automation. Its documented capture workflow includes screenshots of a page and of an element. This is a practical choice when your existing JavaScript tooling already uses Puppeteer; like Playwright, it leaves browser setup and execution with your team.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Minimal example:
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
For an element-only image, select the element and call screenshot on the resulting handle:
const element = await page.$('.report-card');
if (!element) throw new Error('Could not find .report-card');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'report-card.png' });
Choose the selector that identifies the intended region on the target page. If the selector is absent, handle that explicitly rather than silently saving a page screenshot instead.
Hosted APIs: choose a request when browser operations are not your job
A hosted screenshot API changes the integration shape: your application sends a request, and the service operates the browser capture. This can be simpler than maintaining browser instances, but it is not a like-for-like guarantee of pixels, timing or behavior across providers. Check the current documentation for authentication, supported waits, output formats, limits, and how failures are reported before you build against an endpoint.

ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, selector-based element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF page settings, HTML/CSS input, custom CSS or JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector hiding, wait conditions, resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, resizing, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk requests of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API.
It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make migration easier. That does not establish that every existing request will behave identically; validate the options your integration depends on. Each response indicates the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its stated billing policy excludes bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits.
Browserless and ScreenshotOne
Browserless documents a screenshot endpoint for URL-to-image and HTML-to-image work, with PNG, JPEG or WebP output and Puppeteer-style options. Review its current endpoint documentation for authentication, wait settings, request behavior and service limits that matter to your workload.

How to choose and migrate without assuming identical output
- Map the actual job. Decide whether you need a whole page, a viewport, a specific element, a PDF, or screenshots after interactions. Note any login, cookie, custom-header, timing or viewport requirements.
- Choose ownership. Pick Playwright or Puppeteer if browser control belongs in your codebase or test suite. Pick a hosted endpoint if a request/response integration is a better fit and you prefer not to operate browser instances.
- Capture representative pages. Include JavaScript-rendered content, custom fonts, long scroll regions and pages requiring interaction. This is an evaluation method, not a claim that the options have been benchmarked against one another.
- Compare the output in a consistent environment. With self-hosted automation, keep runtime and browser settings stable. When changing providers or environments, expect possible rendering differences and validate the result that matters to your workflow.
- Check the operational details. For a hosted service, confirm current authentication, waits, formats, limits, sensitive-data handling and failure behavior. For self-hosted tools, account for maintaining the browser runtime and automation.
- Handle untrusted input deliberately. If you render untrusted HTML, do not treat migration as only a rendering change: the wkhtmltopdf project status page warns about using it without sanitization. Apply suitable sanitization and isolation for your system.
Troubleshooting common screenshot failures
- The screenshot misses content rendered by JavaScript: navigation completion may not mean the specific content is ready. Wait for a relevant selector or application state, or perform the interaction that reveals the content.
- A full-page image is missing lazy-loaded material: the page may load images only as they approach the viewport. Use a capture option or automation approach that triggers lazy content before saving, then inspect the resulting image.
- An element screenshot fails or is empty: the selector may not match, the element may not yet be visible, or the page may need an interaction first. Check for the element and wait for the state your capture requires.
- Visual comparisons differ between runs: rendering can vary by OS, browser version, settings, hardware and headless mode. Standardize the environment and capture configuration before judging the application change.
- A hosted API request fails or returns an unexpected result: check the service’s current authentication requirements, request options, wait behavior and limits. With ScreenshotOne, use HTTPS for credentials, cookies and other sensitive request data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an alternative guarantee the exact same pixels as wkhtmltoimage?
No such cross-tool pixel equivalence is established here. Validate the pages and conditions that matter to your own workflow.
Is Selenium a possible route if my team already uses WebDriver?
Yes. AWS synthetic monitoring documentation lists Selenium WebDriver alongside Playwright and Puppeteer as browser-access options in some canary runtimes, and describes storing UI screenshots. That is an example monitoring use case, not a direct comparison of the frameworks.
