What changes when you use non-Apple earbuds with an iPhone?
Bluetooth pairing and everyday listening
Third-party Bluetooth earbuds can pair with an iPhone through its Bluetooth settings. In its own iPhone guide, Soundcore says the products it discusses use AAC on iPhone and that its iOS app can provide controls such as EQ, ANC, gestures, and firmware updates. It also says LDAC does not activate on iPhone for those products. This is manufacturer guidance for Soundcore products; check the specific earbud maker’s documentation rather than assuming every model supports the same codecs or app features. Third-party multipoint is not Apple automatic switching
Some earbuds can connect to multiple devices using Bluetooth multipoint. RTINGS says the Liberty 5 Pro supports multipoint across up to three devices, but that is not the same as AirPods’ automatic switching among Apple devices. Soundcore also notes that AirPods offer Apple-specific conveniences such as case-open setup prompts and Find My integration. How to narrow the choices
Start with fit and activity
In-ear buds with sealing tips, open-fit designs, and models with stabilizing wings or hooks feel and stay in place differently. For workouts, the Beats Fit Pro’s wings are designed to stabilize the buds; SoundGuys also lists multiple tip sizes. Check comfort and the manufacturer’s water-resistance details before relying on any model for sweat or rain. SoundGuys’ Sony WF-C710N review reports IPX4 water resistance, but that specification should not be generalized to other models.
Separate noise cancellation, calls, and device switching
ANC, microphone performance, and multi-device behavior are distinct trade-offs. RTINGS reports strong background-noise isolation for the Liberty 5 Pro, while noting that its microphone sounds less natural than the Sony alternative in its comparison. If you take frequent calls, look for microphone-specific evidence rather than treating strong ANC as proof of better call quality. If you switch among an iPhone, tablet, and computer, check whether a model supports multipoint and how it behaves with your devices.

Check model generation and exact listing
Product names can be similar across generations: Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear (3) are separate models in the cited guides. Verify the full model name on the listing and check the maker’s current iOS app and compatibility notes before purchase. Recommendations and inventory can change as models are updated.

In its guide updated August 11, 2026, RTINGS names the Liberty 5 Pro its best tested AirPods Pro alternative. It describes substantial noise isolation, an iOS-supported app with an eight-band EQ, and multipoint for up to three devices. SoundGuys’ travel recommendation cites ANC and multipoint. Its testing reported more than nine hours per charge and more than 30 hours total with the case, as well as IPX4 water resistance. Battery performance varies with settings and use, so treat those figures as that publisher’s test results rather than guaranteed runtimes.
