No single Windows setting reliably stops every game freeze or stutter. Start by updating Windows, reducing avoidable background activity and checking for resource pressure. Then test only the gaming settings that fit your Windows version, graphics hardware and game. Change one thing at a time and compare the same game scene so you can tell what helped.
How to troubleshoot game stuttering on Windows
First check whether Windows or another app is competing with the game for resources. Microsoft lists several possible causes of poor PC performance, including background activity and low storage, and recommends trying practical maintenance steps rather than relying on one switch. Microsoft’s PC performance guide also notes that older hardware may not improve significantly through software changes alone.

- Check for Windows updates: Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Review Optional updates for relevant drivers. Windows updates often include fixes and performance improvements, and some updates require a restart.
- Use supported graphics-driver updates: Identify your graphics hardware and use the PC or GPU maker’s supported update route. Avoid third-party driver-download sites.
- Inspect resource use during the problem: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Check Processes and Performance while the stutter occurs for unusual CPU, memory or disk pressure. Close only apps you recognize and are not using.
- Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity: Disable startup apps you do not need and review background permissions. Do not disable Windows services wholesale.
- Check storage and restart: Low available storage can affect performance. Windows includes Storage Sense, temporary-file cleanup and drive optimization tools; do not remove files you do not understand. Restart, then test with only the game and necessary launchers open.
Which Windows 11 gaming settings are worth trying?
These settings have specific uses; they are not universal fixes. Before changing one, note your current setting. Test the same game and scene after each change, and revert it if performance gets worse.

Choose the right GPU for a game
This is useful on systems with multiple GPUs, such as some laptops, if a game is assigned to the wrong one. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game under custom options, choose Options, then select High performance and save. Confirm that you selected the game’s executable, then restart the game. This setting does not promise an improvement when the game is already using the intended dedicated GPU. Try Optimizations for windowed games
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode—not every game or fullscreen mode. Microsoft says the feature changes supported presentation behavior to reduce frame latency and enable supported features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and enable the option under Default settings. Restart the game to test it. If a particular game behaves worse, open that game’s Graphics options in the same settings area, turn off the optimization for that game and retest.
Check Game Mode
Find Game Mode in Settings > Gaming. Microsoft describes it as a feature intended to optimize system performance during gaming, but its guidance does not provide a benchmark or guarantee that it will resolve stuttering. If you record gameplay, review Game Bar and Captures settings separately; recording may use resources, but Microsoft does not quantify its effect on stuttering.

Should you change Windows power mode?
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Microsoft’s power-mode guide describes Best performance as maximizing performance and Balanced as balancing performance with battery use. Best performance is worth testing for a demanding session when a laptop is plugged in and extra power use and heat are acceptable. Balanced may suit battery use better. Available choices depend on the device and manufacturer. If the control is unavailable because a custom power plan is selected, Microsoft’s guide suggests returning to a standard Balanced plan through Control Panel.

Usually, no separate DirectX download is needed for Windows 10 or 11. Microsoft says each version of Windows includes the latest DirectX version available for that OS and recommends Windows Update for DirectX updates. To inspect your system, run dxdiag and check the System tab; the tool reports DirectX and driver information. A game may still require particular supported hardware or API capabilities. How to tell whether a setting helped
- Choose a repeatable scene where the freeze or stutter happens.
- Record the current setting and observe the scene before changing anything.
- Change one setting, restart the game when directed, and repeat the same scene.
- Keep the change only if the result is better; otherwise restore the previous setting and test another applicable step.
This approach helps separate a useful change from normal variation. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not quantify how much any setting reduces freezes or stuttering, so a percentage improvement cannot be promised.

If stuttering continues, use Task Manager observations and the game’s requirements to identify a likely constraint before considering hardware changes. Microsoft notes that older PCs may not see significant improvement from its software troubleshooting steps and that an upgrade may be a longer-term option. That does not establish a universal need for more RAM, a different drive, cooling equipment or any other specific purchase; identify the constrained component first. For Windows 10 users, note that Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025, as stated in its performance guidance.
