For quickly finding a file by its name, Everything is the closest fit among these options. If you need to search document contents and other indexed Windows data, start with Windows Search. Choose PowerToys Run or Command Palette if you want file lookup inside a broader keyboard-driven launcher. The right choice depends on what you are searching and which locations are indexed—not on a verified, universal speed ranking.

Which Windows search tool should you choose?

Tool Best fit Search scope Workflow
Everything Finding a file by a known or partly remembered name or path Its documentation describes indexing local NTFS volumes; check your storage and configuration rather than assuming every location is covered. Dedicated file-search utility
Windows Search Searching indexed documents and other supported Windows data types Files and data included in the Windows Search index; coverage depends on settings. Built-in Windows search platform
PowerToys Run Looking up indexed files while using a keyboard launcher Its Windows Search plugin searches files and folders in the Windows Search index. Launcher for files and other actions
PowerToys Command Palette Combining file lookup with app launching, commands, web browsing, and Windows tools The overview documents file and folder search but does not establish comprehensive drive coverage or comparative speed. Broader command and launcher interface

The table describes documented scope and workflow, not benchmark results. The available sources do not provide a controlled, comparable speed test across these tools.

Everything: choose it for filename-first search

Everything is a strong option when you remember all or part of a filename, its extension, or its path. voidtools describes it as a Windows file-search engine with quick indexing, instant filename searching, real-time updating, offline operation, and no telemetry. Those speed and feature descriptions are the publisher’s claims, not independent measurements. Its feature overview centers on names and paths; it does not establish equivalent fast searching inside document text. See voidtools’ product overview.

The help documentation says Everything creates an index of local NTFS volumes when it first runs. You can search with partial names, extensions such as *.pdf, or full paths. That makes it useful when the filename is your clue. If the file is on a non-NTFS volume or another location, confirm whether that storage is covered before relying on the results. Using Everything and Searching in Everything explain its search approach.

Windows Search: choose it for indexed content and Windows data

Microsoft describes Windows Search as a desktop search platform for common file and data types, including email, contacts, calendar appointments, documents, photos, and multimedia. It is the more relevant built-in option when your query is about indexed document content or data beyond filenames. This does not mean every file or drive is indexed automatically; the index’s coverage depends on configuration. Microsoft’s Windows Search overview describes the platform.

If a file is missing from results, check which drives and folders Windows Search includes and whether a relevant location is excluded. Microsoft’s PowerToys Run documentation points to Windows Search settings for adjusting drive coverage and exclusions. Changing the index scope can help with coverage, but it also changes what the search-based launcher plugin can find.

PowerToys Run: search files from a keyboard launcher

PowerToys is a free, open-source collection of Windows utilities, and PowerToys Run includes a Windows Search plugin for indexed files and folders. It suits people who prefer opening a launcher rather than switching to a dedicated file-search window. Its file results inherit Windows Search’s index limits: a location outside that index will not become searchable through the plugin simply because you use Run. Microsoft’s PowerToys overview and the PowerToys Run documentation describe the tools.

Command Palette: choose a broader command interface

PowerToys Command Palette can search files and folders, launch apps, run commands, browse the web, and open Windows tools. It is worth considering when you want those actions in one keyboard-driven interface. Microsoft’s overview does not establish that Command Palette searches files faster than Everything or Windows Search, so choose it for its broader workflow rather than a speed claim. Read the Command Palette overview.

What about Listary?

Listary may be relevant if you want search integrated with File Explorer and file dialogs. A Windows Central comparison published September 17, 2025 describes that integration and reported a paid tier and price at that time. That is dated secondary reporting, not confirmation of current pricing or present-day feature details; check Listary’s own current information before making a purchase decision. Windows Central’s comparison is the source for that report.

How to decide—and compare search on your own PC

  • You know the filename, extension, or path: try Everything first, especially for filename lookup across its indexed local NTFS volumes.
  • You need indexed document contents or other Windows data: use Windows Search and inspect its index scope if results are incomplete.
  • You want file lookup alongside other keyboard actions: consider PowerToys Run or Command Palette, keeping their respective search coverage in mind.
  • You search from Explorer or file dialogs: consider whether Listary’s reported integration suits your workflow, and verify current details directly.

There is no controlled, comparable benchmark in the cited documentation that establishes one tool as the fastest on every PC. To compare them for your own use, search for the same known files on the same drives, try both filenames and the kind of document-content query you actually need, and check whether each tool can see the relevant locations. Treat the result as specific to your files, index settings, and storage—not as a universal ranking.
