Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For fast filename searches on local NTFS drives, Everything is the strongest alternative in this comparison. For finding words inside documents, start with Windows Search and make sure the relevant folders and file contents are indexed. PowerToys Run is useful when you want a keyboard-driven launcher, but its file results rely on the Windows Search index rather than a separate index of its own.
Which Windows search alternative should you choose?
| Your main task | Best starting point | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find files by name on local NTFS volumes | Everything | It is built to index file and folder names and return matching names quickly. | NTFS indexing requires the Everything service or running the app as administrator; searching file contents is slow. |
| Find words inside documents | Windows Search | Windows can index text contents for configured file types. | The relevant locations and content-indexing options must be enabled, and the initial index can take time to build. |
| Open apps, settings, and indexed files from the keyboard | PowerToys Run | Its Windows Search plugin exposes files and folders through a keyboard-accessible launcher. | File coverage depends on Windows Search’s indexed locations and settings. |
| Search across more of the PC without adding another search engine | Windows Search in Enhanced mode | Enhanced mode indexes across the PC, including user folders and files. | Microsoft says the broader indexing can use more system resources. |
These tools address different search jobs, so “fastest” depends on whether you need filenames, document text, broad coverage, or keyboard access.

Check Windows Search before installing another tool
Windows Search builds an index of files and properties to speed up searches. Microsoft says Classic mode indexes Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop by default; you can add locations. Enhanced mode indexes the entire PC, including user folders and files, and may use more system resources. See Microsoft’s guide to Search indexing in Windows.
Choose the locations and file details to index
In Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Choose Classic or Enhanced, then use the included and excluded locations controls to adjust coverage. Windows indexes file names and full paths by default. For supported file types, you can choose to index properties only or properties and file contents. The initial build can take up to a couple of hours, according to Microsoft Support; the index then updates in the background as files change.

Microsoft gives finding music matching “Beethoven” in a fraction of a second with a completed index, versus minutes without one, as an illustrative example—not a guarantee for every PC or query. Microsoft also says the index is typically less than 10 percent of the size of indexed files, though it can take a larger share when there are many tiny files or code.
Everything: best for filename searches
Everything is a Windows search utility focused on file and folder names. It initially displays files and folders, then narrows the list as you type a filter. Voidtools describes it as indexing names rather than document contents; its FAQ says: “Everything only indexes file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build its database.”

What it can and cannot search
Use Everything when you know all or part of a filename and want to locate it across indexed volumes. It also has a content-search function, but the contents are not indexed, so voidtools says content searches are slow. If finding a phrase inside documents is the main task, Windows Search with content indexing enabled is the better starting point.
Setup and resource figures
For NTFS indexing, voidtools says Everything needs its service or must be run as administrator. Its undated FAQ, accessed in 2026, gives vendor-reported examples of indexing about 250,000 files in about five seconds and one million files in about one minute. The same FAQ estimates about 35 MB of RAM and less than 14 MB of disk space for the 250,000-file example, and about 100 MB of RAM and 45 MB of disk space for one million files. These are the vendor’s examples, not independent comparative benchmarks; performance on a particular system may differ.

PowerToys Run: a keyboard launcher, not a second index
PowerToys Run is a launcher in Microsoft’s PowerToys suite. Its Windows Search plugin can return files and folders already indexed by the Windows Search Index service. It is therefore a convenient keyboard access layer, not an independent indexer that automatically expands where Windows Search can look. Microsoft documents the plugin and its dependency in the PowerToys Run guide.

Windows Search’s newer search-box features are still rollout-dependent
On July 13, 2026, Windows Insider authors Jeff Petty and Anderson Aiziro announced improvements to the Windows Search Box, including better surfacing of local files, support for two-character file searches, and controls for web and Microsoft Store suggestions. Their post said the changes were rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel and that experience varies by region. That announcement does not establish availability for every Windows user. See the Windows Insider announcement for rollout details.

Choose by search target, not a single speed ranking
- Known filename, local NTFS drive: Try Everything, accounting for its NTFS service or administrator requirement.
- Words or phrases inside documents: Configure Windows Search to include the relevant folders and index contents for the appropriate file types.
- Keyboard-first workflow: Use PowerToys Run if you want a launcher, knowing its file results come from the Windows Search index.
- Files spread across user folders: Consider Windows Search Enhanced mode, especially if you do not want a separate search utility.
There is no independent benchmark here comparing the tools on the same PC. The practical distinction supported by their documentation is what they index and how you access results: Everything specializes in filenames, Windows Search can index configured document contents, and PowerToys Run surfaces Windows Search’s indexed files through a launcher.
