The best Windows 11 search alternative depends on what you need to find: use Everything for files and folders by name, PowerToys Command Palette for a keyboard-first way to launch apps and run Windows tasks, or tune Windows Search when the missing results are caused by indexing settings. No controlled current head-to-head benchmark establishes one option as universally fastest.
Choose by what you want to find
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Launch an app or open a Windows setting | Start or PowerToys Command Palette | Windows already searches apps from Start; Command Palette adds a keyboard-first place for apps, commands, settings, and other actions. |
| Find a file or folder by name | Everything by voidtools | Its documented focus is quick indexing and instant filename search. |
| Find documents by words inside them | Windows Search, with indexing configured for content | Windows can index text content for supported file types when configured to do so. Filename-focused tools are not automatically content-search tools. |
| Use a launcher while keeping Windows Search results | PowerToys Run | Its Windows Search plugin searches the Windows index, so coverage remains tied to the locations and files Windows indexes. |
| Combine launcher, Explorer, or third-party indexing workflows | Investigate Fluent Search, Listary, or Flow Launcher | They offer different approaches, but details such as current indexing behavior and version support should be checked with each vendor. |
First, check whether Windows Search is configured to find the item
Windows 11 includes search in Start, the taskbar, and File Explorer. Press the Windows key or open Start and type an app name to find an installed app. In File Explorer, search the current location or choose This PC when you need to search more broadly. Windows indexing can catalog names, paths, properties, and—in supported and configured file types—document text. That means a missing result may reflect index scope or settings rather than a need for a different search app.

Check indexed locations and file contents
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows and review the search scope and available indexing options.
- Open Advanced indexing options and confirm that the folders or drives containing the files are included.
- In indexing options, review the file types settings. For relevant formats, check whether Windows indexes properties only or properties plus file contents.
- If you have just added locations or changed settings, allow indexing to complete before judging the results. Microsoft says initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours; Windows updates the index in the background afterward. See Microsoft’s Search indexing in Windows guidance.
Index size depends on what is included and how it is configured. Microsoft gives a rule of thumb of less than 10 percent of the size of indexed files, while noting that collections with many small files or code can take a larger proportion. The index is not a fixed-size cost for every PC.
On Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft documents semantic indexing in addition to traditional indexing for listed document and image formats, with semantic-index data stored locally. This is a device-specific capability, not a standard Windows 11 feature on every computer. Check Microsoft’s guide to finding files and apps in Windows for the supported-device and format details.

Best options for different search workflows
PowerToys Command Palette: apps, commands, and settings from the keyboard
Command Palette is a customizable, extensible keyboard-first interface for launching apps, running commands, searching files, browsing the web, and reaching Windows tools. Its documented default shortcut is Win+Alt+Space. PowerToys must be installed, Command Palette enabled, and the utility running in the background.
Type an app name to launch it. To search for files, choose Search files or use the file prefix; use $ to navigate Windows Settings. The advantage is one keyboard-driven entry point for several tasks. If you mainly want a dedicated list of filename matches, file search is a distinct action inside the palette rather than its sole purpose. See the Microsoft Learn Command Palette documentation for setup and controls.

Everything: focused filename and folder-name lookup
Everything is the most direct fit in this group when the problem is finding a file or folder by its name. The official voidtools page describes quick file indexing, instant filename search, fast startup, low resource use, a small database, real-time updating, and offline operation; it also says Everything does not collect telemetry or user data. Those claims are specific to Everything and should not be generalized to other search utilities.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose it for name-based lookup, not on the assumption that it will search the words inside document contents or replace an all-purpose app and settings launcher. Its stated capabilities are described on the official Everything support page.

PowerToys Run: a launcher that can use the Windows index
PowerToys Run provides an app-launching interface, and its Windows Search plugin can find files and folders covered by the Windows Search index. That makes it useful if you want a launcher and already rely on Microsoft’s indexed results. It does not independently solve missing coverage: if a drive or folder is outside the Windows index, the plugin will not make that location searchable through the index. Microsoft’s documentation points to Enhanced mode for indexing across all drives. Review the PowerToys Run documentation for plugin behavior and settings.
Fluent Search, Listary, and Flow Launcher: investigate before choosing
A Windows Central comparison published September 17, 2025, describes Fluent Search as offering an independent file indexer or Windows Search, Listary as integrating with File Explorer and file dialogs, and Flow Launcher as a plugin-extensible launcher that can use Everything’s index through its Explorer plugin. These are useful leads, not verified current vendor specifications. Before installing one, confirm its current version, supported Windows platforms, indexing source and scope, and whether the feature you need is available in that version. The comparison is at Windows Central.

How to decide without replacing more than you need
- Missing app results: try Start or the Windows key and type the app name. If you prefer a keyboard launcher with commands and settings access, try Command Palette.
- Missing files by name: first check that the relevant location is indexed. If filename lookup remains your main need, consider Everything.
- Missing matches inside documents: check that the file type is supported and set to index properties and contents, then allow the index to update.
- Want a launcher plus indexed file results: PowerToys Run can surface Windows-indexed files, but its reach depends on Windows Search coverage.
- Want Explorer or file-dialog integration, or another indexing model: compare Fluent Search, Listary, and Flow Launcher against current vendor documentation rather than assuming their features or support have stayed unchanged.
When comparing any option, check its index source (Windows, its own index, or a connection to Everything), which locations it covers, whether it searches file contents or just names, and how it fits your workflow. Also confirm current licensing, availability, and privacy statements with the vendor; one product’s offline or data-collection claims do not establish the behavior of another.
