The best wide-format sublimation printer depends first on the transfer size and production workflow your business needs—not on a claim that one model has the most vibrant color. Epson’s documented options span 24-inch sheet-and-roll printing, 44-inch production, and 64-inch roll systems. The models below are a manufacturer-based comparison, not the result of matched independent print tests.
Which wide-format sublimation printer fits your work?
Start with the widest finished transfer you need, then check the printer’s usable print width, media handling and ink configuration. A 24-inch machine designed for small-business jobs is a different proposition from a 64-inch roll-to-roll system. The table summarizes Epson’s stated configurations and intended workflows; it does not rank measured color accuracy or print quality.

Maximum paper width is not always the same as printable width. Epson lists the F9470 at 64 inches maximum paper width and 63.6 inches maximum printable width; a usable transfer may be narrower still after accounting for margins, layout and the requirements of your press. Check the usable print area for the exact model and media, rather than choosing from a headline width alone.

Think about the largest finished transfer you actually need, including any layout that places multiple items across one print. A wider printer can make larger or more numerous transfers possible, but only if your transfer paper, finishing process, heat press and production space can handle them. For the 24-inch SC-F500, Epson lists both sheet and roll handling. The larger models list take-up features intended for roll workflows, with details that vary by model.
Do extra ink channels guarantee more vibrant prints?
No. An additional ink set is a configuration option, not proof that a printer will produce better-looking results for every job. Epson’s F6470H is a six-color 44-inch model: in addition to CMYK, it is configured with Light Cyan/Light Magenta, Fluorescent Pink/Yellow, or Orange/Violet. Epson states that the selected extra-color configuration cannot be changed by the user later, so match it to the products and colors you expect to print before ordering.

The product pages establish manufacturer-listed features and configurations, not a controlled comparison of color gamut, color accuracy or transferred output across models. Those results depend on the print file, profile, RIP settings, paper, substrate and transfer conditions. Ask a local dealer for sample prints made for the type of work you do, and evaluate the transferred result on a comparable material and process; Epson’s F6470H page lists a sample-print option, but that is not an independent test.

Sheets, short runs or continuous rolls
Decide whether production is mostly occasional sheets, short rolls or sustained roll-to-roll printing. The SC-F500 supports cut sheets and rolls. The SC-F6400 lists an optional take-up reel, while the F6470H, F9470 and SC-F9500 pages list take-up features. Confirm how each system loads, tensions, cuts and collects media, and whether those steps match your expected run length and staffing.

Software and color management
Check that the printer’s supported software and profiles work with your design and production setup. Epson lists ICC profiles and Epson Edge Print for the SC-F6400, and Epson Edge Print for the F6470H. The SC-F9500 page lists compatibility with third-party software. Ask the supplier to confirm the specific RIP version, operating system, profiles and workflow support you need; a general software feature listing does not establish compatibility with every setup.
Paper and ink requirements
Confirm that the transfer paper is the right width, coating and type for both the printer and the transfer process. Epson’s product information identifies model-specific media, but the precise paper/printer/press combination should be checked against current regional specifications. For the F9470 specifically, Epson says the printer is designed for genuine Epson ink packs. Treat that as a model-specific requirement, not a rule for every sublimation printer.

Installation, service and ongoing cost
Compare the complete operating fit, not just the printer’s purchase price. Check dimensions and weight, electrical supply, roll loading and storage, the RIP or other software costs, ink and paper use, maintenance tasks, warranty terms and local service coverage. A machine that fits the planned transfer width may still be a poor choice if its installation needs or service arrangements do not suit your workspace.

Epson characterizes the SC-F500 as having a “low total cost of ownership,” but that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independently calculated lifecycle-cost comparison. The available product specifications do not establish total operating cost across these models. Build your own estimate using expected print volume, consumable use, maintenance, service and installation costs.

How to narrow the shortlist
- Set the width requirement. Measure the widest finished transfer and compare it with both listed media width and printable width.
- Describe the production pattern. Identify whether you need sheet changes, short rolls or automatic roll-to-roll handling, and confirm the precise features offered on the local model.
- Choose inks for actual jobs. If considering the F6470H, decide among its three extra-color pairs before purchase; Epson says users cannot change the selection later.
- Validate the full workflow. Confirm paper and press compatibility, software and profiles, installation needs, routine maintenance, warranty and nearby service.
- Assess transferred samples. Compare output on the substrate and with the process you plan to use, rather than relying on color or quality language in a product description.
What Epson’s speed claims can—and cannot—tell you
Epson says the SC-F6400 printhead can increase output “by up to 20%.” That is a manufacturer-published claim, not independently verified throughput for every print mode or job. Epson lists up to 400 ft²/hr for the F6470H; throughput depends on settings and application, and that figure is likewise not an independent test. Neither number establishes comparative output quality or the production rate your business will achieve with its files, media and settings.
