A Wi-Fi router can be a good fit for Xfinity (formerly Comcast) internet, but it does not connect directly to coaxial cable: coax service also needs a compatible cable modem or modem-router gateway. If you already have a compatible modem, choose a separate router based on your speed tier, home layout, devices, and wired-port needs. If you need the whole coaxial setup, check modem compatibility as well as router features before buying.
First decide which equipment you need
On a coaxial Xfinity connection, the modem connects your home to the cable network. The router creates your local network and provides Wi-Fi and wired networking. A gateway combines both functions in one device. Xfinity permits customer-owned equipment, but the right choice depends on what you already have and what your specific service supports.

| What you have or want | What to choose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A compatible modem, but you want your own Wi-Fi and network features | A standalone Wi-Fi router | Router WAN and LAN port capabilities, Wi-Fi coverage, and device support for your speed tier |
| No coax-compatible equipment, and you want to supply your own | A compatible cable modem plus a separate router, or a compatible modem-router gateway | Check the modem or gateway against your address and service in Xfinity’s compatibility checker |
| An Xfinity gateway that already meets your needs | Keep using the gateway | Compare its support and Xfinity-specific features with the control and equipment choice you want |
| An Xfinity gateway, plus a personal router | Use the gateway with the personal router in Bridge Mode | Follow Xfinity’s Bridge Mode instructions; only one device can connect to the gateway in that mode |
For a customer-owned modem, Xfinity’s guidance is direct: “Before you buy your own equipment, make sure it works with Xfinity and supports your internet speed.” Check Xfinity’s equipment guidance and use My Device Info with your address or account. The checker is personalized and the compatible-device list can change, so do not rely on a saved or generalized list as a guarantee for your service.

There is no single router that is best for every Xfinity household. The official sources here do not establish a current independent ranking of standalone router models. Instead, use these checks to narrow your choice without mistaking a router’s advertised capabilities for what your entire connection can deliver.

Match the router to your plan and ports
Check that the router’s WAN port can accept the speed your modem can deliver and that its LAN ports suit any wired devices you intend to connect. The router, modem, client devices, and subscribed service all affect the practical result. A fast Wi-Fi specification alone does not establish that a router can support your plan end to end; confirm the relevant capabilities for the exact model and your Xfinity tier.
Account for coverage and client devices
Consider the size and layout of your home, where people use Wi-Fi, and whether walls or distance separate devices from the router. Older phones, laptops, and other clients may not support the router’s newest wireless capabilities. Nearby Wi-Fi networks can also affect performance, so a router upgrade cannot guarantee the same speed everywhere in the home.

Choose the support model you want
With customer-owned equipment, you take responsibility for setup, updates, security, and troubleshooting. An Xfinity-provided gateway can offer provider support and Xfinity-specific features. Decide whether equipment choice and self-management matter more to you than those conveniences before replacing a working gateway.
Using a personal router with an Xfinity gateway
If you keep the Xfinity gateway but want your own router to handle routing, Xfinity’s instructions call for enabling Bridge Mode. In this arrangement the personal router manages the home network. Xfinity notes that some app-based network-management and extender features are unavailable while Bridge Mode is on.

- THREE-IN-ONE CABLE MODEM, AC1900 ROUTER, AND XFINITY COMPATIBLE VOICE PORTS - Includes 24X8 DOCSIS 3. 0 cable modem, AC1900 Dual Band (2. 4GHz and 5GHz) Gigabit Router, four Gigabit (GigE) Ethernet ports, and two XFINITY Voice compatible phone ports. This product is approved by Comcast for Xfinity Internet and Voice, and recommended by Comcast for XFINITY Internet service speeds up to 400 Mbps.
- REQUIRES COMCAST XFINITY INTERNET SERVICE. Approved by and for use with Comcast Xfinity and Xfinity X1. This product will not work with any other Internet service provider.
- ELIMINATE UP TO $156 IN CABLE MODEM RENTAL FEES PER YEAR – Say goodbye to monthly rental fees and landline phone costs.

Four 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports provide wired connections to Windows and Mac computers and other Ethernet-capable devices. A Broadcom cable modem chipset provides security from Denial of Service attacks.
- WIRELESS POWER BOOST FOR BETTER SPEED AND RANGE - adds high-performance WiFi power amplifiers to boost the wireless signals to the legal limit, giving a significant boost in speed and range. In addition, AnyBeam beamforming at both 2. 4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies focuses the signal on wireless clients to further enhance performance and range. NOT included is a backup battery option (Model 98250) that allows your phone to make calls for 8 hours on standby after power loss.
- Open Xfinity’s Bridge Mode instructions and follow the steps for your gateway.
- Enable Bridge Mode before connecting the personal router. Xfinity says only one device can connect to the gateway in this mode.
- Connect the personal router to the gateway and use the router’s own setup process to configure its network.
Do not treat Bridge Mode as a way to make the personal router replace the gateway’s cable-modem function: the gateway remains the connection to coaxial service.
Set up and place the equipment for better coverage
After setup, placement is one of the practical factors you can control. Xfinity recommends placing the gateway or router upright on the main floor, in a central location, at least two feet off the floor. See Xfinity’s Wi-Fi placement guidance. Avoid assuming that a router’s advertised coverage will overcome distance, building layout, or interference in every home.

If you are activating an approved third-party modem, Xfinity provides an app flow for activation and estimates about 20 minutes. That is an estimate, not a promised completion time; see Xfinity’s activation instructions.
What to check when Wi-Fi speeds disappoint
Before blaming the router, work through the full connection and the conditions where you measured speed:
Best Value
- 1st Generation / Ver 1.0 / Will not work with any other provider accept designated provider
- 1 x Gigabit Ethernet Port.
- AC2100 Gigabit Wi-Fi (300+1733 Mbps)
- Dual band, simultaneously operating 2.4GHz 2x2 and 5GHz 4x4 MIMO 802.11b/g/n/ac radios
- WPA2-PSK (AES) / SPI Firewall / VPN passthrough
- Check equipment compatibility: Confirm that the modem or gateway supports your Xfinity service and speed tier through My Device Info.
- Check the connection path: Make sure the router’s WAN connection and the modem’s capabilities can support the subscribed service.
- Check the client: A phone or computer with older Wi-Fi capabilities may not use the router’s full potential.
- Check distance and placement: Compare performance near the router with performance in the room where the slowdown occurs.
- Consider nearby networks: Other Wi-Fi networks can affect wireless performance.
For eligible Xfinity fiber properties, a router connects to the ONU over Ethernet rather than serving as a coax modem. Xfinity gives a 2.5 GbE-or-faster WAN port as an example for speeds above 1 Gbps in that fiber setup. This is a fiber-specific example, not a general requirement for coaxial cable plans; see Xfinity’s fiber equipment requirements.
