Robinhood may suit someone who wants a mobile-first account and eligible fractional purchases from $1. The right Webull alternative depends on what you plan to invest in and which account features you need—not simply on which app advertises $0 commissions.
Which Webull alternative fits a beginner?
Start with your investing needs rather than the app interface. A taxable brokerage account, an IRA, mutual funds, bonds, recurring small purchases, and options access are different requirements. Check that a broker offers the account and investments you want, then compare fractional-share eligibility, cash handling, support, and fees tied to your actual activity.

Fidelity: broad fractional access and investment choice
Fidelity may fit a beginner who wants to buy small dollar amounts across a wide range of U.S. stocks and ETFs. Its comparison lists more than 7,000 eligible U.S. stocks and ETFs and a $1 minimum fractional transaction, with comparison data dated September 18, 2026. Fidelity also lists $0 online U.S. stock commissions. Those details are Fidelity’s own published claims, not an independent comparison of execution or total costs.
#1 Best Overall
Before choosing Fidelity, confirm the specific account type, investment eligibility, cash sweep arrangement, and fees that apply to your activity. A low minimum is useful only if the investments and account you need are available on acceptable terms.
Charles Schwab: learning resources and human support
Schwab may suit a beginner who values more than a mobile interface. It highlights education, paperMoney practice trading, 24/7 support, and branch access. Schwab says its brokerage has no minimum deposit or opening or maintenance fee, and lists $0 online trades in listed stocks and ETFs. It also lists stocks, ETFs, options, bonds, and mutual funds.
Rank #2
Schwab lists options at $0 commission plus $0.65 per contract; options trading requires approval. Its fractional-share offering is narrower in the cited comparison: Fidelity’s September 18, 2026 table lists a $5 minimum and S&P 500 stock access for Schwab. Check Schwab’s current eligibility rules before relying on that feature.
Robinhood: mobile-first fractional purchases
Robinhood’s support information says eligible fractional stock and ETF orders can start at $1. The feature does not cover every security: the support page describes qualifying National Market System securities listed on exchanges such as Nasdaq and NYSE, and excludes OTC stocks. Do not assume the $1 minimum applies to every investment or product available in the account.
Rank #3
- Comes with secure packaging
- Easy to read text
- It can be a gift option
Compare the complete account and fee terms with your needs, especially if you want investments beyond eligible stocks and ETFs or value in-person support and structured learning resources.
Vanguard and E*TRADE: useful comparison points
Fidelity’s comparison dated September 18, 2026 lists Vanguard fractional trading as limited to Vanguard ETFs and says E*TRADE does not offer fractional shares. Those distinctions may matter if fractional purchases are central to your plan. The available comparison evidence does not establish a full beginner-focused case for either broker across account services, education, support, and costs, so investigate those areas directly before deciding.

How to compare costs beyond the commission headline
Look at the fees for what you will actually do
A $0 commission does not mean every transaction is cost-free. Webull says its $0 stock, ETF, and options commissions apply to specified self-directed accounts and U.S.-listed securities; regulatory and exchange fees may apply, and certain options orders have contract charges. See Webull’s pricing disclosures and compare the equivalent current schedule for any alternative. Transfer, account-specific, and activity-related charges can also matter, depending on your circumstances.
Separate sweep APY from money-market yield
Uninvested cash may be handled through a bank deposit sweep or another arrangement. A bank sweep APY and a money-market fund’s seven-day yield are different measures and should not be compared as if they were the same product. Vanguard’s comparison page dated September 21, 2026 provides a time-stamped snapshot of cash treatment and yields across brokers; rates and eligibility conditions can change. Check the current disclosure for the account you are considering.

Understand the history behind zero commissions
Zero-commission stock trading spread across the retail brokerage industry over time. A 2021 SEC staff report describes the shift and notes that firms may receive revenue through sources such as payment for order flow and advisory services. That report is historical market-structure context; it does not establish a particular broker’s current revenue mix, the quality of an individual trade, or the effect on any one customer. Read the SEC staff report on early-2021 equity and options market structure for that limited context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical checklist before opening an account
- Confirm the account type you need, such as taxable brokerage or retirement, and whether the broker offers the investments you intend to hold.
- Check fractional-share eligibility by security and the minimum dollar purchase; a broker’s feature may not cover every stock or ETF.
- Compare total costs for your own activity, including options contract charges, regulatory and exchange fees, transfers, and account-specific charges.
- Read how uninvested cash is handled and identify whether a quoted return is a bank sweep APY or a money-market fund yield.
- Decide whether education, paper trading, around-the-clock support, or local branches matter to you.
- Choose an interface you can use comfortably. More advanced trading tools do not automatically make a brokerage easier or better for a beginner.
