The most useful non-streaming job for an older Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra is an ambient photo-and-art display: when idle, it can show selected Google Photos albums, artwork, the time and weather on a connected TV. Set it up in Google Home. It is a screensaver for a TV, not a standalone digital photo frame, and what appears is not fully under your control.
Use Ambient Mode as a photo and art display
Google’s Ambient screensaver can display selected Google Photos albums, Art Gallery imagery and other available ambient information while a Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra is idle. The TV must remain on to show it. This is the clearest documented way to reuse the device without actively streaming.

Google’s instructions for these older Chromecast models are separate from its instructions for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer. If your device has a Google TV interface and remote, use the screensaver settings for that platform rather than assuming the legacy steps below apply. Google describes the original Chromecast as an HDMI device controlled by a phone, tablet or computer; later models added different features. Google’s Ambient screensaver instructions and product history outline these distinctions.
Set up Ambient Mode in Google Home
- Open the Google Home app and select the Chromecast device tile.
- Open the device’s Settings, then choose Ambient mode.
- Sign in to a Google Account if prompted, then choose Google Photos or another available source and configure the options you want.
For personal photos, link Google Photos and select one or more albums. Shared albums need to have a name to appear in the album picker. Archived photos will not display, even when they are part of a selected album. Google’s setup guide has the current app details: Set up Ambient Mode on Chromecast.

If some album photos are missing
Google says personal-photo curation may omit blurry, poorly exposed, low-resolution or near-duplicate pictures from private and shared albums. To turn off curation for eligible albums, set Personal photo curation to Live albums only. This changes which photos can be shown; it does not make archived photos eligible.
Choose what else appears on the screen
Depending on the available settings, Ambient Mode can also show Art Gallery imagery, experimental image sources, a clock and weather. Weather uses the home address saved in Google Home or, if none is set, the device’s IP address. Chromecast Ultra’s maximum Ambient display resolution is 1080p; that limit should not be generalized to every Chromecast model. The Family & Friends auto-updating album is optional. It requires face groups and, according to Google’s help page, is unavailable in Europe, Illinois and Texas.
Know the limits before using it as a frame
Ambient Mode is not a conventional slideshow with playback controls. Google says it cannot be turned off; if custom preferences are disabled, featured photos can still appear. You also cannot control when or how often a particular item appears. That makes it suitable for a changing background display, but not for a precisely ordered or timed photo presentation. Check whether an old Chromecast still works
Before relying on it, check that the Chromecast powers on, joins Wi-Fi, appears in Google Home and offers Ambient Mode settings. These are practical checks, not a guarantee that a particular streaming app or Google service will remain compatible.
Support for first-generation Chromecast is especially uncertain. In a report dated May 24, 2026, TechRadar said Google had resolved a casting issue affecting some services, while noting that first-generation devices stopped receiving updates in 2023 and that some apps no longer support the hardware. The reported fix does not guarantee that every app will work on every old device. TechRadar’s dated report provides that time-specific update.

If Ambient Mode preferences fail to appear, Google suggests restarting the device. Its troubleshooting guidance also describes a relinking workaround: cast a YouTube video, stop and disconnect the cast, then try linking Ambient settings again. See Google’s Ambient Mode troubleshooting guidance.
What to expect from different Chromecast generations
The device generation matters because the interface and capabilities changed over time. Google’s product history distinguishes the original phone-controlled HDMI dongle, Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV; those historical differences do not promise present-day app support. Do you need anything else?
For the photo-display use, no additional purchase is needed if the Chromecast, Wi-Fi, TV, Google Home and Google Photos account are already available. An HDMI extension cable is only a possible convenience if the dongle is hard to reach or blocks a neighboring port; it is not required for Ambient Mode.
