For most courts, mount a smartphone in landscape on a stable, elevated tripod behind a baseline, near the court centerline, and keep it fixed for the match. Frame the full court and all four players before play. On a suitable fenced court, a secure fence clamp and compatible phone holder can be a quicker alternative.
Choose a mount that suits the court
| Setup | Best fit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Smartphone on a tall tripod | Open courts without a nearby fence | Offers flexible placement, but needs a stable base, enough height, and a position outside the playing area. |
| Smartphone on a fence clamp | Fenced courts with a secure, suitable mounting point | Can be quick and repeatable, but depends on fence access, clamp compatibility, and secure attachment. |
| Dedicated or action camera on a fixed support | When phone recording constraints make another camera worth considering | No independent head-to-head comparison or substantiated best model is established by the available sources. |
Whichever device you use, hands-free means the camera stays mounted and fixed during play—not that it tracks the ball. For match review, a steady view that preserves court geometry and all four players is more useful than panning after rallies. PickleTip’s camera setup guide makes the same practical point.

Position the camera to show the whole point
Start behind a baseline, near the court centerline and outside the playing area. Raise the camera enough to see over nearby players, then adjust until both baselines, sidelines, kitchen lines, the net, and all players fit in the frame.
PickleTip’s guide gives a starting range of about 7–10 feet high and 8–15 feet behind the baseline. Treat those as starting points, not a universal standard: lens width, fence placement, runoff space, and device all affect the final position. A steep downward angle can make depth, movement, and partner spacing harder to judge.

Use landscape orientation. If the full court will not fit, try a wider lens or zoom level; PB Vision’s recording instructions note that around 0.5x is common on many phones. Check the image itself rather than assuming a particular zoom setting will work on every device.
Pick recording settings for the job and the available light
For ordinary review, 1080p is a reasonable starting resolution. Frame rate involves a tradeoff rather than one universally best setting:

- 60 fps: PickleTip suggests this when the phone can sustain it for the entire match. It may help show motion, but indoors compare it with 30 fps if the faster setting looks dark or noisy.
- 30 fps: PB Vision recommends this for its analysis workflow and smaller files. That is a service-specific recommendation, not proof that 30 fps is best for every use.
These are recommendations from different sources for different workflows, not the result of a controlled comparison. Your phone, lighting, and planned recording length matter; choose settings it can maintain through the match.
Set up and check before play
- Choose the support: Use a tripod on an open court. If a suitable fence is available, use a secure clamp and compatible phone holder.
- Mount outside play: Place the support behind a baseline near the centerline, then raise and position the camera to include the full court.
- Set orientation and lens: Turn the phone to landscape and select a wide enough lens or zoom level to keep the court in frame.
- Record a short test: Inspect the actual video for framing, stability, focus, and indoor motion clarity. Check that the court corners and all players remain visible.
- Check storage and power: Estimate file size from a one-minute test at the exact settings you plan to use. Leave extra storage for warm-up or a longer match, and make sure the phone has enough battery.
- Start recording and verify it: If the mounted position makes controls hard to reach, start first, mount the phone, and confirm recording is still running. Practice the sequence before match day.
Ask players and check local rules
Ask the other players before recording. For a club, tournament, or other organized play, check the facility or event’s rules directly; permissions can depend on the venue or event. USA Pickleball’s rules summary links to the 2026 Official Rulebook but does not establish a universal filming policy for every recreational court, club, or event.
