The easiest way to play many classic Nintendo games on Switch 2 is through Nintendo Switch Online: the standard membership includes selected NES, Super NES, and Game Boy games, while the Expansion Pack adds selected Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy titles. Switch 2 owners with the Expansion Pack can also play a curated GameCube library. These are selected catalogs, not complete archives, so check whether the specific game you want is included.
How can you play old Nintendo games on Switch 2?
There are two main routes: play a game from Nintendo’s subscription libraries, or find a separate eShop release or packaged collection. Which route works depends on the specific title; an old game’s original console being represented in Nintendo Classics does not mean every game from that console is available.

| Route | What it offers | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | Selected NES, Super NES, and Game Boy games | Requires an active membership on the Nintendo Account accessing the library; download the relevant library app. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | The standard-tier libraries, plus selected Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy games | Requires an active Expansion Pack membership. Virtual Boy has an additional accessory requirement and regional limits. |
| GameCube Classics on Switch 2 | A selected GameCube library, including Nintendo examples such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SOULCALIBUR II | Requires Switch 2 and an Expansion Pack membership; this GameCube library is exclusive to Switch 2. |
| Separate releases or packaged collections | Some older games are sold individually or included in publisher collections | Availability and Switch 2 compatibility vary by title. Check the current listing before buying. |
Nintendo’s classic-games catalog page outlines the system libraries and membership tiers. Because catalog rosters change, use the current list to confirm a specific game rather than relying on the console name alone.

Standard Nintendo Switch Online
The standard membership provides selected games for NES, Super NES, and Game Boy through their respective Nintendo Classics library apps. It is the most direct option if the games you want are in those three catalogs.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
The Expansion Pack includes the standard libraries and adds selected Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy games. Virtual Boy access has a separate accessory requirement, and availability is regional; check Nintendo’s current information for your location.
GameCube Classics
Nintendo’s GameCube Classics library is available on Switch 2 with an Expansion Pack membership. It is a curated collection, not access to the full GameCube catalog. Nintendo lists The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SOULCALIBUR II as examples on its Expansion Pack page.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to play classic games?
You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to access the games in the Nintendo Classics service. The account used to access the library needs the appropriate membership; another account’s subscription on the same console is not enough. Nintendo says downloaded games can be played offline, but the membership must be verified online at least once every seven days. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ for the service rules.

Nintendo’s FAQ says the games with added features in Nintendo Classics are not planned for individual sale outside the service. That statement applies to those service games; it does not mean classic games are never sold separately. Nintendo also points to eShop releases and packaged collections as other ways older games appear on newer systems. Check the individual game’s current listing for availability and Switch 2 compatibility.
How do you download a Nintendo Classics library?
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online area on the console.
- Choose Nintendo Classics, then select the system library you want.
- Download that library’s software through Nintendo eShop.
- Open the app using the Nintendo Account with the required active membership.
Nintendo’s access guide provides the library and membership details, including the Virtual Boy region note. Nintendo does not give a fixed schedule for future library additions, so a missing game should not be assumed to be coming on a particular date.

Retro controllers are optional, but they can suit games designed around their original layouts. Nintendo says the GameCube controller is optional for GameCube Classics and is only compatible with Switch 2. Nintendo also lists N64, NES, Super NES, and SEGA Genesis controllers as compatible with Switch 2 for compatible games. Check the system and game compatibility details before buying an accessory; a controller does not add games to a library or replace the membership requirement.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose standard Nintendo Switch Online if the games you want are in its NES, Super NES, or Game Boy libraries.
- Choose the Expansion Pack if you want its additional system libraries, including Nintendo 64 or Game Boy Advance, or the GameCube library on Switch 2.
- Look for a separate release or collection if a specific game is not in the subscription catalog. Verify the title, region, and Switch 2 compatibility in its current listing.
- Consider an original-style controller only if you prefer that control layout; Nintendo lists these accessories as optional for the relevant games.
Subscription prices and offers vary by region and can change, so check Nintendo’s current regional membership page before comparing costs.
