The right fix depends on what “broken” means: if the display still shows an image but touch does not work, try a USB mouse through a compatible OTG adapter. If the screen is blank, an external monitor may help—but only if that specific phone supports video output. Neither route bypasses the lock screen, and an unsupported connection will not restore access.
First, identify what still works
- Image visible, touch unusable: A mouse connected through a phone-compatible USB OTG adapter may let you navigate and unlock the phone. A keyboard can help enter a PIN or password.
- Display blank, phone still powers on: A compatible external display may show the phone’s screen. This requires model-specific video-output support; having a USB-C port alone does not establish compatibility.
If the phone will not power on or cannot communicate with a mouse or external display, contact the manufacturer or arrange repair rather than treating an accessory as a guaranteed recovery method.

When the screen is visible but touch does not work
Try a USB OTG adapter and mouse
Connect a wired USB mouse to the phone using a compatible OTG adapter. If the phone supports the connection, a pointer should let you navigate the visible screen. Depending on the phone and connection, a keyboard may also help you enter your existing PIN or password.

When the display is blank: check for external video output
A USB-C-to-HDMI hub, monitor or TV, HDMI cable, and mouse and keyboard can provide a way to see and control a phone only when that particular model supports video output. Google notes that connected-display features are not available on all devices and may vary; Samsung also warns that not all of its phones support HDMI output. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your model before buying a hub.
Android devices may show a mirrored screen or a desktop-style display, depending on the device and settings. An external screen does not remove the need to unlock the phone with its existing credentials.

Samsung Galaxy procedure for supported models
Samsung Canada’s instructions, last updated June 17, 2026, apply to Galaxy phones running Android 12 or later that support DisplayPort. Samsung notes that details can differ by location. Its listed equipment is a USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A ports, an HDMI display and cable, and wired USB mouse and keyboard. Follow this procedure only for a Galaxy phone that meets the stated requirements:
- Connect the HDMI display and the wired mouse and keyboard to the hub.
- Hold both volume buttons on the phone while connecting it to the hub, then release the buttons after the connection.
- Use the display to see whether the phone opens screen mirroring or Samsung DeX.
- Unlock using the mouse or keyboard and the phone’s existing credential. If DeX opens, exit DeX to reach the mirrored phone screen.
- Once you can access the phone, use Samsung Smart Switch to transfer data to a new phone, following Samsung’s instructions for your situation.
This button sequence and transfer workflow are Samsung-specific; do not assume they apply to other Android brands or unsupported Galaxy models.

Choose the route that matches the failure

After you regain access, protect the data
Back up or transfer important data promptly while you can control the phone. Do not factory-reset it as an access workaround if you need its local data: Google warns that a factory reset removes phone data and recommends backing up first. If you cannot unlock the phone because the credential is forgotten or the lock screen cannot be reached, the cited manufacturer and platform guidance does not establish a way to bypass that protection; contact the device maker for support.

When accessories do not work
- Recheck compatibility for the exact phone model; USB-C does not by itself confirm OTG input or video output support.
- If a mouse connection does not help with a visible screen, or an external display shows nothing, the phone may not support that route or may have damage beyond the display.
- Contact the manufacturer or arrange repair if you still cannot control the phone. Repair availability, price, and turnaround vary by model and region.
