Capture the smallest view that makes the defect clear: use a viewport screenshot for an issue visible on screen, a full-page screenshot when the rest of the page matters, or an element screenshot when one component is the subject. Then attach it to a report that explains how to reproduce the problem and what you expected versus what actually happened.
Choose the right screenshot scope

These are practical choices, not a universal ranking. Pick the capture that preserves the context needed to understand the defect without making the relevant detail hard to see.

Capture a screenshot in Chrome or Firefox
Chrome: visible viewport or full page
- Open the page where the issue appears and open Chrome DevTools.
- To capture only the visible browser content, choose More options > Capture screenshot.
- To include content outside the viewport, choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot.
- Attach the resulting image to the bug report and make sure the defect is still legible at normal viewing size.

Firefox: full page or a selected element
- Open the affected page in Firefox.
- Use the screenshot icon for a full-page capture.
- For a single component, open the Inspector, select the relevant node, and use the context-menu action Screenshot Node.
- Attach the image and include enough surrounding context in the report to show why the component is problematic.

Write the report around the evidence
A screenshot supports a bug report; it does not replace a description another person can follow. Gumroad’s contributor guide recommends specific reproduction steps and expected-versus-actual behavior: Gumroad contributor guidance. A useful report can follow this structure:
- Summary: One sentence describing the visible problem.
- Steps to reproduce: Numbered actions that reliably lead to it.
- Expected: What should have appeared or happened.
- Actual: What appeared or happened instead.
- Screenshot: The clearest relevant viewport, full-page, or element capture.
- Environment: Browser, operating system, and app or site version when known and relevant. This is useful context, not a universal requirement established by the cited guidance.
TextMate’s project guidance also treats a screenshot as supporting material when it clarifies something text cannot; an image alone is not an adequate bug report: TextMate project guidance.
