Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 show Recovery HRV and Vitals; Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED and Polar Grit X2 emphasize overnight readings against a personal baseline; supported Fitbit devices calculate HRV from sleep data. The available manufacturer documentation does not establish a universal accuracy winner, so compare the feature and ecosystem rather than treating “best” as a proven leaderboard.
What HRV tracking tells you—and what it does not
Heart rate variability is the variation in time between heartbeats. A watch can turn those intervals into a number or a status, but that result is most useful as a trend against your own usual readings, not as a score to compare directly with someone else’s. Age, sex, sleep quality, stress, nutrition and exercise can all affect HRV. Google describes Fitbit HRV as a wellness trend, not an individual diagnostic result (Google Health Help Center).

Manufacturers do not present HRV in the same way. Some emphasize a measured value; others use HRV as one part of a recovery or baseline status. Those differences matter when choosing a watch, as does how long it takes to establish a useful personal range.
Which watches offer HRV monitoring?
| Watch or device family | How HRV is used | Sampling and baseline | App or ecosystem |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Recovery HRV in the Heart Rate app; HRV also appears in Vitals views. | Recovery HRV readings are sampled while you are still, so reading frequency varies with activity. Apple says a typical Vitals range requires seven days of sleep tracking with Sleep Focus configured. | Apple Watch and its Heart Rate and Vitals views. |
| Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED | Sleep-based HRV status relative to a personal baseline, with balanced, unbalanced and low categories. | Analyzes wrist heart-rate readings during sleep; three weeks of consistent sleep data are needed to display HRV status. | Garmin watch and its HRV status feature. |
| Supported Fitbit devices | HRV calculated using RMSSD, with a displayed latest value and trend views. | Uses the longest sleep period in the prior 24 hours, provided it exceeds three hours. Google advises wearing the device for at least a full day including sleep to check data. | Google Health app; HRV support depends on the exact Fitbit model. |
| Polar Grit X2 | HRV contributes to Nightly Recharge, an overnight recovery measure that compares sleep and autonomic nervous system (ANS) status with a recent personal baseline. | ANS measurements include heart rate, beat-to-beat interval, HRV and breathing rate. Polar says Nightly Recharge status appears after three nights used to establish an individual level. | Polar Nightly Recharge. How to choose the right HRV watch for you
Choose Apple Watch for Recovery HRV and Vitals views
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are the documented choices here if you want HRV presented within Apple’s Heart Rate and Vitals features. Recovery HRV is sampled while you are still, rather than on a fixed schedule; the number of readings therefore depends on your activity. For a typical range in Vitals, Apple requires seven days of sleep-tracked data, with Sleep tracking and Sleep Focus configured. Apple says medication, elevation, alcohol intake and illness can affect metrics and recommends a comfortable fit for sensor readings. Vitals measurements are not intended for medical use (Apple Support).
Choose Garmin for an overnight status against your baseline
The Instinct 3 AMOLED is the documented Garmin option in this comparison. It analyzes wrist heart-rate readings during sleep and needs three weeks of consistent sleep data before HRV status appears. Its balanced, unbalanced and low labels make the feature a status-based view rather than just a standalone number. This may suit someone who wants an overnight trend framed against their own baseline (Garmin owner’s manual).

Choose a supported Fitbit for RMSSD and sleep-based trends
Google documents Fitbit’s HRV calculation as RMSSD: “Fitbit uses the common formula called Root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) to determine HRV from your recent heart rate data.” The latest displayed value comes from the longest sleep period in the previous 24 hours, and sleep periods must exceed three hours to count. The app offers trend views by week, month, quarter and year. Because support is model-specific, check that the exact Fitbit device you are considering reports HRV; do not assume every Fitbit does (Google Health Help Center).

Choose Polar for HRV within Nightly Recharge
On Polar Grit X2, HRV is one component of Nightly Recharge rather than a standalone product promise. The feature combines sleep status with overnight ANS measurements and compares them with your recent baseline. Polar says it takes three nights to establish an individual level. The cited manual is in Finnish, so confirm the terminology and instructions in the documentation for your market before relying on exact menu labels (Polar Grit X2 manual).

What to compare before buying
- Exact model support: HRV is not guaranteed across every device in a brand’s lineup. Confirm the feature on the specific model’s current official product information.
- When readings are taken: Garmin, Fitbit and Polar document overnight approaches. Apple’s Recovery HRV is sampled while you are still, and its Vitals baseline relies on sleep tracking.
- What the result looks like: Fitbit describes a calculated HRV value and trends; Garmin uses baseline-based status labels; Polar includes HRV in Nightly Recharge; Apple provides Recovery HRV and Vitals views.
- Time to a baseline: Apple specifies seven days of sleep tracking for a typical Vitals range, Garmin requires three weeks of consistent sleep data for HRV status, and Polar says three nights establish an individual level for Nightly Recharge.
- Comfort and routine: If a feature depends on sleep data, the watch must be comfortable enough to wear overnight and sufficiently charged for your routine.
- Phone and app fit: Check where readings and trends appear and whether that ecosystem works with your phone and existing devices.
Can you compare HRV accuracy across these watches?
Not from the cited manufacturer documentation. The sources describe different algorithms, sampling windows, baseline requirements and status labels, but do not provide standardized independent head-to-head accuracy testing. A displayed value from one system should not be treated as directly interchangeable with another system’s number or status.
For consumer use, pay attention to changes over time within the same device and in the context of sleep, stress, exercise and other relevant factors. HRV readings alone do not diagnose a health condition. Apple explicitly says Vitals measurements are not intended for medical use, and Google presents Fitbit HRV as a wellness trend rather than an individual diagnosis.
