For a large MySQL database, start with a dedicated-CPU, memory-optimized VPS and size it from the InnoDB working set—not total database size. Antihost VPS is listed first here with AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D CPUs, NVMe storage, full root access, 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64GB of RAM. Its Linux VPS plans are self-managed and available in the USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine; confirm the region and backup design for your workload. DigitalOcean’s memory-optimized Droplets specify 8GB of RAM per vCPU and target high-performance SQL and NoSQL databases. AWS Lightsail’s 32GB memory-optimized Linux bundle is a straightforward budget reference at $144 per month, with 4 vCPUs, 320GB storage and 6TB transfer, but you must account for transfer overages and the operational work of running MySQL yourself.

What “best” means for a large MySQL database

There is no universally best VPS. The right plan is the smallest configuration that keeps your active data and indexes in memory, sustains peak queries without CPU throttling, provides predictable storage I/O, and meets your recovery objectives. A database that is 200GB on disk may need less RAM than a 40GB database with a high-concurrency workload and poorly selective queries. Conversely, a 2TB archive with few reads may need storage capacity rather than a large buffer pool.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before comparing providers, record these values:

  • Total database size: the size of tables, indexes, binary logs and temporary staging data you expect to keep online.
  • Working-set estimate: the data and indexes touched during normal and peak periods.
  • Read/write mix: approximate read queries, writes, updates and deletes during the busiest interval.
  • Concurrency: active application connections, background jobs, reporting sessions and replication threads.
  • Recovery-point objective (RPO): how much committed data you can afford to lose, measured in time.
  • Recovery-time objective (RTO): how quickly the service must be restored after a failure.
  • Geography and replication: application region, replica locations and any data-residency constraints.

Only after those values are known can “large” be translated into RAM, CPU, storage and network requirements.

Recommended starting point in 2026

Choose memory-optimized, dedicated CPU first

For sustained MySQL query execution, replication, index creation, backups and maintenance, a dedicated-CPU VPS is the safer starting point than a burstable or heavily shared instance. A dedicated allocation reduces the risk that neighboring tenants consume the host’s CPU during your busiest period. You still need to check the provider’s published CPU generation and throttling policy: “dedicated” does not by itself identify clock speed, instruction-set support or sustained performance.

DigitalOcean’s official VPS description says its memory-optimized Droplets include 8GB of RAM for each vCPU and work well for workloads including “high-performance SQL or NoSQL databases.” That ratio is a useful comparison baseline, not a MySQL sizing law. If a 4-vCPU shape follows the ratio, it would imply 32GB of RAM; confirm the actual current shape, region and price before ordering.

Use storage-optimized when I/O or capacity dominates

DigitalOcean describes its storage-optimized Droplets as using NVMe storage for large data workloads. NVMe can reduce latency and increase throughput compared with regular SSD storage, but the label alone does not tell you the provisioned IOPS, queue-depth behavior, durability model or burst limits. Ask for those details, and find out whether the database volume and backup copies occupy separate failure domains.

Keep AWS Lightsail as a simple bundled-price reference

AWS lists a 32GB memory-optimized Linux Lightsail bundle at $144 per month, with 4 vCPUs, 320GB of storage and 6TB of transfer. AWS describes memory-optimized plans as offering a higher memory-to-CPU ratio for workloads such as in-memory caching, real-time big-data analytics and high-performance databases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The $144 figure is a published bundle price, not a MySQL performance benchmark. It also does not eliminate administration: you remain responsible for operating-system updates, MySQL configuration, monitoring, backups, replication and failover. Outbound transfer above the included allowance can incur additional charges, so calculate traffic for the actual region and architecture.

Plan comparison: what is established and what still needs verification

No provider-neutral MySQL benchmark was available for these plans. Do not treat a plan description, RAM ratio or bundle price as proof of query-per-second performance.

How much RAM does MySQL need on a VPS?

Size RAM around the InnoDB buffer pool and then reserve memory for everything outside that pool. The buffer pool should hold the hottest table and index pages, but allocating all available memory to it can cause swapping, failed connections or out-of-memory events.

A practical sizing equation

Use this planning model:

Required RAM = buffer-pool target + connection memory + temporary and sort memory + operating system and agents + safety headroom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Buffer-pool target: estimate the actively queried data and indexes, not merely the total size of the schema. On a dedicated database host, many operators begin with a conservative majority of RAM for InnoDB and adjust after observing real usage; the exact percentage should be validated against your connection count and workload.
  • Connection memory: account for per-thread buffers and the number of simultaneous sessions, including application pools, administrative users and replication.
  • Temporary and sort memory: large joins, sorts, grouping and online schema changes can allocate memory outside the buffer pool.
  • System and monitoring: reserve room for the Linux kernel, filesystem cache, log shippers, metrics agents, backup tools and security software.
  • Headroom: leave capacity for traffic spikes, failover catch-up, schema changes and growth. A plan that is full at average load is not production-ready.

As an example, a 32GB VPS is not a 32GB MySQL buffer pool. After the operating system, connection workload, temporary operations and monitoring are reserved, the usable cache is materially smaller. If your measured working set is already close to the available memory, move to the next memory tier before tuning individual variables.

Measure instead of guessing

  1. Measure table and index sizes by schema and identify the objects touched by peak queries.
  2. Track buffer-pool hit behavior, free pages, dirty pages, eviction pressure, swap activity and out-of-memory events.
  3. Record active connections, rejected connections, thread creation, temporary tables created on disk and the largest sorts or joins.
  4. Repeat measurements during the busiest predictable period, not only during a quiet maintenance window.
  5. Increase RAM when the working set, concurrency or maintenance jobs repeatedly consume the safety margin.

Is NVMe worth it for MySQL?

NVMe is valuable when storage latency or I/O throughput limits commits, random reads, redo-log flushing, temporary tables, backups or replica catch-up. DigitalOcean describes NVMe SSDs as delivering faster performance than regular SSD storage and associates them with its premium shared-CPU offerings; its storage-optimized Droplets are also described as using NVMe for large data workloads.

That does not mean every database becomes faster after moving to NVMe. If the workload is CPU-bound, blocked on locks, missing indexes or constrained by insufficient RAM, faster storage may produce little improvement. A large buffer pool can also hide most read latency while making write durability and checkpoint behavior the dominant concern.

Questions to ask about storage

  • Is the advertised storage local NVMe, network-attached NVMe, or regular SSD?
  • What IOPS and throughput are provisioned, and at what request size and queue depth?
  • Are performance limits sustained or burstable?
  • What happens when the instance reaches its storage quota?
  • Is storage replicated, and what is the documented durability model?
  • Can you place redo logs, data files and temporary space on suitable volumes?
  • Can backups be copied to a separate region or account?

Use your own workload’s latency and throughput measurements after deployment. The available provider descriptions do not constitute an independent benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU, concurrency and sustained workload

MySQL performance depends on both single-thread speed and the ability to run many concurrent tasks. Query execution, connection handling, replication, compression, encryption, backups and online schema changes can compete for CPU. A plan with more RAM but too few or throttled vCPUs may perform worse during a write-heavy or highly concurrent period.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Prefer predictable CPU for these workloads

  • High write rates with frequent commits and index maintenance
  • Read-heavy applications with many simultaneous sessions
  • Large joins, aggregations and reporting queries
  • Replication where a replica must apply changes quickly enough to avoid lag
  • Backups, logical exports or physical-copy operations running alongside production traffic
  • Online schema changes and index rebuilds

Compare vCPU generation, dedicated versus shared allocation, baseline performance and throttling policy. AWS’s memory-optimized description establishes the memory-to-CPU intent of its plans, but it does not publish a provider-neutral MySQL result. DigitalOcean’s “Premium Droplets” statement identifies them as shared CPU using the latest two available CPU generations and NVMe SSDs; shared CPU can be appropriate for variable workloads, but it is not the same choice as a reserved CPU for sustained database load.

Storage capacity: plan beyond the current database

Usable capacity must cover more than today’s tables. Reserve space for indexes, binary logs, relay logs, temporary tables, redo and undo growth, failed deployments, exports and at least one local recovery artifact if your design requires it. Running a database volume near full can stop writes and prevent cleanup operations.

Capacity checklist

  • Current data and index footprint
  • Monthly growth and seasonal growth
  • Binary-log retention needed for point-in-time recovery and replicas
  • Temporary space for large queries and schema changes
  • Backup staging space, if backups are created locally before upload
  • Filesystem and operating-system space
  • Free space required to rebuild indexes or restore a copy for testing

The 320GB included with the AWS Lightsail 32GB bundle may be sufficient for a database that remains comfortably below that limit after logs, temporary space and growth are included. It is not automatically sufficient for a 320GB database, because the database cannot safely consume every advertised gigabyte.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backups, point-in-time recovery and failure domains

A VPS plan is only as resilient as its recovery process. Snapshots help with whole-instance recovery, but they are not a substitute for transactionally consistent backups, retained binary logs and a tested restore procedure.

Minimum production backup design

  1. Take regular full or physical backups according to the RPO.
  2. Retain binary logs long enough to restore to a precise point in time.
  3. Store at least one copy outside the primary instance and, for important systems, outside the primary region or account.
  4. Encrypt backups and restrict access to the credentials that can delete them.
  5. Test restores on a separate instance at a frequency that supports the RTO.
  6. Measure restore duration, replication catch-up and application reconnection rather than assuming they will be fast enough.

DigitalOcean’s product page states that weekly Droplet backups cost 20% of the Droplet cost. That is a recurring backup charge based on the Droplet price; the supplied facts do not establish retention length, point-in-time recovery behavior or restore timing, so verify those items before treating the option as a complete backup strategy.

For Lightsail, include the published bundle resources and transfer rules in the budget, then confirm snapshot pricing, retention and restore behavior for the region and bundle you intend to use. If backups leave the region, include their storage and outbound-transfer costs.

Network, region and replication design

Place the primary VPS near the application and users that generate most traffic, while keeping replicas and backup destinations in failure domains that do not share the same outage. A geographically distant replica can improve disaster recovery but adds replication latency. A nearby read replica can reduce read load but may not protect against a regional incident.

Verify regional details before purchase

  • Monthly price for the exact region and operating-system image
  • Included transfer and the price of outbound overage

Managed database or raw VPS?

A raw VPS offers control over MySQL versions, filesystem layout, extensions, replication and tuning. It also makes you responsible for patching, secure configuration, monitoring, failover, backup validation and incident response. A managed database can be preferable when the RTO is strict, the team lacks database operations coverage or the cost of an outage is higher than the service premium.

A raw VPS is a reasonable fit when

  • You have staff who can administer Linux and MySQL at all hours required by the service.
  • You need filesystem or replication choices that a managed service does not expose.
  • You can automate backups, monitoring, patching and restore tests.
  • You have documented failover steps and a tested replacement instance.

Favor managed operations when

  • A short RTO matters more than minimizing the monthly instance bill.
  • You need automated high availability, backups and patching with defined support responsibilities.
  • No one on the team can regularly test restores or investigate replication failures.
  • The database is business-critical enough that a single-instance design is unacceptable.

A managed service is not automatically cheaper or faster, and a VPS is not automatically unreliable. The decision is primarily about operational responsibility and recovery capability.

Deployment and validation checklist

  1. Write the workload profile: database size, working set, read/write mix, peak connections, growth, RPO and RTO.
  2. Select a memory tier: start from the 8GB-per-vCPU comparison point for a memory-optimized DigitalOcean shape or the 32GB Lightsail reference, then leave operating-system and workload headroom.
  3. Select CPU deliberately: choose dedicated CPU for sustained production load where available, and verify generation and throttling behavior.
  4. Validate storage: confirm NVMe or SSD type, capacity, IOPS, throughput, durability and burst limits.
  5. Design backups before loading data: define full-backup frequency, binary-log retention, off-site copies, encryption and restore tests.
  6. Configure observability: monitor CPU, memory, swap, disk latency, IOPS, throughput, filesystem capacity, connections, lock waits, replication lag and backup completion.
  7. Load-test representative traffic: use production-like schemas, indexes, query patterns and concurrency; measure tail latency and write durability rather than a single average.
  8. Test failure and restore: rebuild a replacement VPS, restore the latest backup, replay logs if applicable and time the complete recovery.
  9. Document scaling triggers: define thresholds for RAM, CPU, storage, I/O, lag and transfer that require resizing or adding a replica.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying by total database size alone

Symptom: a large disk is purchased but queries still spill to disk or evict hot pages. Fix: measure the working set and size RAM and I/O independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allocating every gigabyte to the buffer pool

Symptom: swapping, failed connections or out-of-memory kills during reports and backups. Fix: reserve memory for connections, temporary operations, the operating system and monitoring.

Assuming NVMe solves every bottleneck

Symptom: storage is faster but query latency barely changes. Fix: inspect CPU saturation, lock waits, missing indexes, buffer-pool pressure and query plans.

Ignoring transfer overages

Symptom: the monthly bill rises when replicas, backups or users move data out of the region. Fix: model application, replication and backup traffic against the plan’s allowance and overage price.

Counting snapshots as a tested recovery plan

Symptom: a snapshot exists, but nobody knows whether it is consistent or how long restoration takes. Fix: perform scheduled restores and record the actual RTO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a large memory tier with insufficient CPU or I/O

Symptom: memory remains available while CPU queues, replication lag or commit latency grows. Fix: compare the complete resource profile and resize the constrained resource, not just RAM.

Which option should you choose?

Choose Antihost VPS when

Antihost VPS is listed first here for a self-managed Linux VPS with AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, NVMe storage, full root access and 2 to 64GB of RAM. Plans offer 1 to 16 vCPUs, unlimited traffic on a 1Gbps port and regions in the USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine; confirm that the region and operational workload fit your design.

Choose DigitalOcean memory-optimized when

You want the clearest documented memory-to-vCPU guidance for a database host and your workload benefits from a high memory ratio. The stated 8GB per vCPU and explicit SQL/NoSQL positioning provide a clear memory-to-vCPU comparison point. Confirm the exact dedicated-CPU shape, storage I/O, regional price, transfer allowance and backup workflow.

Choose DigitalOcean storage-optimized when

Your measurements show that NVMe capacity, latency or throughput—not RAM—is the limiting resource. Verify durability, IOPS, burst behavior and how backups survive an instance or volume failure.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Choose the AWS Lightsail 32GB bundle when

You value a simple published bundle and your workload fits within 4 vCPUs, 32GB RAM, 320GB storage and 6TB transfer. At $144 per month, it is a transparent budgeting reference, but confirm transfer overage, storage I/O, backup details and regional availability before production deployment.

Move to a larger tier or managed service when

The working set and concurrency exceed the safe memory margin, replication or maintenance competes with application traffic, or your RPO/RTO cannot be met reliably by a single self-managed VPS. If operational risk is the primary constraint, evaluate managed database operations instead of only buying a bigger server.
