Mozilla’s built-in Firefox VPN and most Firefox extensions cover browser traffic; a full-device VPN app protects traffic from Firefox and other apps. Mozilla’s built-in option is free but limited to 50 GB per month and is still rolling out. This comparison summarizes provider documentation, not independent speed, leak, streaming, or privacy tests, so it does not name a tested winner.
Does Firefox have a built-in VPN?
Yes. Mozilla Support describes a built-in feature that routes Firefox-originating traffic through a secure proxy and masks your IP address. It protects Firefox traffic, not traffic from other apps on your device. It requires a Mozilla account and has a 50 GB monthly allowance; when you reach it, protection pauses until the next calendar month. Mozilla Support explains the feature and its limits.

Availability is being rolled out gradually and depends on region, eligibility, and rollout status. Check Firefox to see whether the feature appears rather than assuming it is available to everyone. Mozilla says it is not available in enterprise environments or to users with enterprise policies.

Those dated rollout details do not guarantee that every user in those countries currently has access. Which kind of Firefox VPN do you need?

Do not infer full-device protection from an extension’s presence in Firefox. Check whether the provider says the extension works alone as a browser proxy or pairs with its desktop app to cover the whole device.

How to choose a VPN for Firefox
1. Decide whether browser-only coverage is enough
If you only want Firefox traffic routed through a VPN, the built-in feature or an extension may suit your needs. If you also want traffic from other browsers, messaging apps, games, or other software covered, choose a full-device app. Confirm the extension’s stated coverage and any app-pairing requirement on the provider’s documentation.

2. Check account, data, and eligibility limits
For Firefox’s built-in feature, verify that it appears in your browser, that you can use a Mozilla account, and that 50 GB per month fits your usage. For third-party extensions, check account requirements and distinguish access to an extension from access to paid-plan locations or features.
3. Confirm operating-system and browser controls
Mozilla describes its per-website Firefox VPN controls as available on Windows. Other providers document different extension features: NordVPN lists WebRTC protection, while ExpressVPN documents both browser-proxy use and app pairing. Check current provider documentation for your operating system and the controls you actually need; feature availability can change.

4. Review privacy disclosures rather than equating a VPN with anonymity
A VPN changes which provider may observe network traffic; it does not make you fully anonymous. Review the provider’s privacy policy and any audit disclosures directly. The product documentation summarized here does not establish independently tested logging practices, connection speeds, leak protection, or streaming access.

Mozilla’s built-in feature is specifically described as routing Firefox traffic through a secure proxy and masking the user’s IP address. Mozilla says it supplements HTTPS rather than replacing it. An extension’s protection may likewise be limited to Firefox, unless it is paired with a provider’s app that covers the device. A VPN is one layer of network privacy, not a guarantee of anonymity or a substitute for secure connections and careful account practices.
