There is no independently verified “best” VPN for Equatorial Guinea. No local performance tests are established here, so a reliable pick depends on your device, the provider’s anti-censorship options, nearby server coverage, and how clearly its privacy claims are independently documented. A VPN can encrypt and reroute traffic when you have an internet connection; it cannot bring back a connection that has been shut down.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do in Equatorial Guinea
Restrictions on internet access are documented in Equatorial Guinea. Freedom House’s 2025 country report, which reports on developments in 2024, describes authorities restricting internet and mobile communications on Annobón following arrests connected to protests. The report gives Equatorial Guinea a score of 5 out of 100 and classifies it as “Not Free”; that is a political-rights and civil-liberties assessment, not a measurement of internet speed or VPN performance.

The U.S. State Department’s 2023 human-rights report, published in 2024, says the government restricted and disrupted internet access and censored online content. It also reported that independent outlet AhoraEG was accessible only through a VPN. This is a finding about the reporting period, not a live check of the site’s availability.

In a September 14, 2025 report, the Associated Press described the Annobón outage as having continued for about a year. Residents and rights groups said the loss of internet access affected banking and emergency hospital services; AP reported that the exact shutdown mechanism was unclear. The reported duration should not be read as confirmation of the outage’s status today.

A VPN needs an underlying connection to reach its servers. If your mobile or fixed internet connection is blocked or unavailable, the VPN cannot restore it. Access Now’s report on internet shutdowns in 2025, published in 2026, says low-Earth-orbit satellite internet was shut down 14 times across seven countries during 2025, including Equatorial Guinea. That finding shows satellite access is not a guaranteed workaround; it does not establish what connectivity options are available to an individual reader.
How to compare VPNs when local performance is unknown
Provider pages describe features, not independent tests on Equatorial Guinea networks. Treat statements about obfuscation, server infrastructure, and privacy as claims to assess—not proof that a service will connect reliably, run quickly, or be available where you are.

- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
- Anti-censorship options: Check whether the service offers alternate protocols, obfuscation, or other ways to connect if a VPN connection is blocked. A feature’s existence does not establish that it defeats a particular block.
- Server locations: Look at the provider’s current server list and consider locations near where you need an exit point. A nearby server may be worth considering, but proximity alone does not establish speed or availability from Equatorial Guinea.
- Device and app support: Confirm that the provider supports your operating system and the devices you actually use. If connecting through an app is difficult, check what setup alternatives the provider currently documents.
- Privacy evidence: Read the privacy policy and examine any independent assurance by its date, scope, and public availability. A marketing statement or the existence of an audit is not by itself proof that every privacy risk is eliminated.
- Terms and local availability: Check current plan prices, payment options, refund terms, and whether the service is available to you. These details can change; no current prices, local payment support, or refund terms are established here.
Provider features to investigate
The following comparison is limited to features and privacy evidence described on the linked provider pages. It does not rank the services by Equatorial Guinea speed, reliability, or ability to bypass a local restriction.
| Provider | Provider-documented point | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its anti-censorship page describes Stealth, Smart Protocol, and alternative routing. The company says Smart Protocol can switch protocols when some are blocked, while alternative routing can route around blocks affecting access to Proton’s service. | These are provider-described connection features. They do not establish a local success rate or that any feature works on a particular Equatorial Guinea network. Proton’s regional page returned for Guinea concerns Guinea, not Equatorial Guinea, and is not evidence of coverage or performance in this country. |
| ExpressVPN | Its Rights Center describes a protocol designed to support obfuscation and says its servers run on RAM. | These are company claims, not evidence of local availability, speed, or success against a specific block. |
| NordVPN | Its no-logs page describes external reviews, including reviews by Deloitte. | For a specific assurance, check the underlying report’s date, scope, and whether the report is publicly accessible. The provider page alone should not be expanded into a broader claim about all service operations. |
| Surfshark | Its security page says Deloitte provided assurance reports in 2023 and 2025 on no-logs practices and describes its servers as RAM-only. | These are provider-reported claims. Check the reports’ scope before treating them as assurance about a particular feature or all aspects of the service. |
Is using a VPN legal in Equatorial Guinea?
The available sources do not establish the current legal status of VPN use or how rules are enforced in Equatorial Guinea. Do not infer legality or illegality from a provider’s marketing page, or from information about Guinea, which is a different country. If the legal consequences matter to you, seek current, country-specific guidance from a qualified source.

A practical way to choose
- Define the task. Decide whether you need an encrypted connection on public Wi-Fi, a different apparent location, or a way to attempt access when a VPN connection is blocked. These are different needs, and none can overcome a complete loss of internet connectivity.
- Check current provider documentation. Compare anti-censorship features, supported devices, server locations, and setup options on each provider’s own site. Do not treat a server list or feature description as proof of local performance.
- Inspect privacy assurance. Read the policy and, where an audit or assurance is cited, verify its date, scope, and public availability rather than relying on a headline claim.
- Review current terms before paying. Confirm the price, payment methods, refund conditions, and service availability that apply to your location. None of those current terms is established by the provider-feature information above.
- Test only when you have a working connection. If you subscribe, check whether the service connects from your actual network and device. A successful test in one place or at one time does not establish performance elsewhere or during a later restriction.
What this comparison can establish
The documented restrictions make it reasonable to compare VPNs for privacy and the possibility of connecting under some forms of blocking. The provider information above supports a feature-based shortlist, not a local winner. A claim that one VPN is “best” for Equatorial Guinea would require independent, reproducible testing on local networks, with a stated location and test date.
