Check your Apple TV model and tvOS before subscribing
On Apple TV, find the installed software version in Settings > System > Software Updates. Check the model information under Settings > General > About. Menu wording can vary slightly by tvOS version.

Compare the installed version with the provider’s current app requirements, then confirm that your particular model can run that version of tvOS. ExpressVPN and Proton VPN explicitly require tvOS 17 or later for their native apps. The available NordVPN setup information does not specify a minimum, so do not assume its app works on a particular model without checking. The IPVanish report describes app features but does not establish a minimum tvOS version.

Proton VPN: paid-plan access and location selection
Proton VPN’s instructions require users to install the App Store app and verify their account using a code entered on another device. The app supports country selection and a Fastest country option; long-pressing a country shows city choices where available. The service’s release notes record tvOS version 1.6.1 on May 4, 2026, including Arabic language support and bug fixes and stability improvements.

IPVanish: protocol options reported in 2026
TechRadar reported on July 27, 2026, that IPVanish added WireGuard and OpenVPN to its Apple TV app alongside IKEv2. The report also associates Scramble, an obfuscation feature, with OpenVPN. Protocol availability is a feature comparison point; it does not establish how fast or reliable the app will be on your connection.

These methods are not interchangeable. A native VPN app runs on Apple TV itself. The other approaches change how the device gets its network connection or how its location is presented.

- Native app: The VPN client runs on the Apple TV, so setup and connection controls are available on the device. It depends on a compatible Apple TV model, supported tvOS version, and provider app.
- VPN-capable router: The router connects through the VPN and can cover devices on its network. This may help when an Apple TV cannot run a compatible app, but it requires a router that supports VPN-client configuration and separate setup. NordVPN and ExpressVPN document router approaches.
- SmartDNS or MediaStreamer: These are DNS-based alternatives, not equivalent to an encrypted VPN connection. ExpressVPN specifically warns that MediaStreamer does not provide VPN privacy and security benefits. Consider it only if its different protections and behavior meet your needs.
- Computer-shared connection: NordVPN documents sharing a VPN connection from a Windows computer over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The computer becomes part of the connection path, so the setup differs from installing and running an app on Apple TV.
How to choose without mistaking features for test results
- Match the app to your hardware. Verify the Apple TV model and tvOS version, then confirm the provider’s current minimum requirements.
- Choose the connection method. Prefer a native app if your device supports it and you want to control the VPN on Apple TV. Consider a router or computer-shared connection if an app is unavailable; treat SmartDNS as a distinct option rather than VPN protection.
- Check plan eligibility and controls. Proton VPN’s Apple TV app requires a paid plan. For location selection or protocol controls, rely on features specifically documented for the Apple TV app, not features described for another device.
- Evaluate performance separately. The cited materials do not provide comparable, reproducible tests of Apple TV speed, streaming reliability, privacy, or app usability. Do not treat a provider’s general claims or an app’s protocol list as proof that it will reliably reach a particular streaming catalog.
What Apple TV VPN evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Apple published guidance on VPN security on January 28, 2026. The provider materials and dated reporting cited here help establish app availability, setup routes, requirements, and selected features. They do not provide a controlled comparison of the four services. As a result, “best” depends on your Apple TV’s compatibility, the setup you are willing to manage, and the app controls you need—not on a verified overall performance winner.
