There isn’t one best VPN for every Android user: comparison publishers disagree because they weigh privacy, usability, streaming, and other factors differently. Mullvad is RTINGS’ privacy-focused pick, ExpressVPN is Top10VPN’s overall choice, and Tom’s Guide recommends NordVPN. The five services below are therefore a shortlist from named reviewers—not five products independently tested by Freedom251. The available evidence does not establish which five, if any, passed this site’s tests.
Which Android VPN should you choose?
Start with what you need the VPN to do. A VPN can reduce what a local network or internet service provider can see and mask your apparent IP address, but it does not make you fully anonymous. You still have to trust the VPN operator with traffic that passes through its service. RTINGS’ 2026 comparison names Mullvad its best Android VPN, while Top10VPN’s 2026 guide puts ExpressVPN first overall and Proton VPN first among free options. Tom’s Guide recommends NordVPN. These are publishers’ conclusions, not a single consensus ranking.

| VPN | What the cited reviewer recommends it for | Consider it if… |
|---|---|---|
| Mullvad | RTINGS’ best Android VPN, with an emphasis on privacy. Its review says an email is not required to create an account. [RTINGS] | Privacy is your priority and you can accept that streaming services may challenge or block VPN-associated IP addresses. |
| ExpressVPN | Top10VPN’s overall Android pick in its 2026 guide. [Top10VPN] | You want to compare a paid all-rounder against your priorities for usability, privacy evidence, speed, streaming, and price. |
| NordVPN | Tom’s Guide’s Android pick; its coverage describes features including a kill switch and split tunneling. [Tom’s Guide] | You value those Android features, but should also check current renewal costs, device limits, and plan inclusions. |
| Proton VPN | Top10VPN’s free Android pick; Security.org also describes its free plan as a strong option. [Top10VPN] [Security.org] | You want to compare a free option, after checking its current data limits, server choices, account requirements, and features. |
| Windscribe | Included among Top10VPN’s recommended Android options; RTINGS highlights its customizable budget plan. [Top10VPN] [RTINGS] | You want to compare plan customization, price, server locations, and free-tier terms. |

Android VPN apps can route sensitive traffic, so judge the provider and the app—not just a promise of privacy or a familiar name. Look for a readable privacy policy, a clear explanation of who operates the service, and evidence that supports any security claims. Do not treat a marketing claim such as “no logs” as proof on its own.

- Kill switch or system-level protection: Find out whether the app offers a kill switch and how it behaves when the connection drops. Android’s system settings may also offer “Block connections without VPN”; availability and wording can vary by Android version and device.
- Leak behavior: Check whether the VPN handles DNS requests and IPv4 and IPv6 traffic as expected, including during a disconnect or server change.
- Permissions: Review what the app requests and whether those permissions make sense for its features.
- Protocols: Compare available connection protocols and whether the Android app lets you choose or automatically selects one.
- Policy and evidence: Read the privacy policy and look for specific, dated independent audits or other evidence, noting what the evidence actually covers.
- Your use case: Check current plan limits and test streaming access for the services and region you care about; neither free access nor streaming compatibility is guaranteed across providers and time.
Why a VPN’s reputation matters
A VPN shifts some trust from your ISP or local network to the VPN provider. That makes the operator’s transparency and security practices relevant, particularly when an app asks to handle network traffic.
Several studies and investigations illustrate why a download count or “free VPN” label is not enough to assess an app. An ACM Internet Measurement Conference paper from 2016 analyzed 283 Android apps using the VPN permission and reported issues including tracking libraries, sensitive permissions, malware flags, leaks, and traffic interception. That is historical, sample-specific evidence—not a finding that every current VPN is unsafe. Read the ACM paper.

In a February 2026 investigation, TechRadar identified 3,471 Android VPN listings on Google Play and manually assessed selected transparency signals. For its dataset and definitions, it reported that 63% used personal email addresses, 54% had substandard privacy policies, and 43% lacked a professional website. Those figures describe that investigation’s dataset; they are not universal rates for all VPN products. A Google spokesperson told TechRadar: “We take security and privacy claims against apps seriously, and if we find that an app has violated our policies, we take appropriate action.” Read TechRadar’s investigation.

Why the “only five passed our tests” claim needs qualification
The cited reviews use different samples and methods. Top10VPN says it tested 59 Android VPNs; RTINGS says it bought and tested 23 VPNs; Security.org says it reviewed more than 50 Android VPN apps and spent about two weeks per app. Those are each publisher’s stated methods and counts, not an independently verified common test.
The information available here does not establish Freedom251’s test dates, devices, Android versions, pass criteria, or which five VPNs passed. For that reason, this article does not present the shortlist above as the result of Freedom251 testing. A substantiated “passed our tests” claim would need to identify the tested products and explain, at minimum, the devices and app versions used, test dates, network and location, IP and DNS leak checks, kill-switch behavior, speed-test baseline, and pass threshold. Measured results should be distinguished from provider claims and editorial judgment.

Are free Android VPNs worth considering?
A free plan can be a useful starting point, but “free” does not mean unlimited or inherently safe. Top10VPN and Security.org both identify Proton VPN as a free Android option; check the current plan’s data allowance, server selection, speed, account requirements, and upgrade terms before relying on it. Top10VPN’s guide and Security.org’s review may help compare their assessments, but plan details can change.
Will an Android VPN work with streaming services?
Streaming access depends on the service, region, VPN server, and time, so no recommendation should be treated as an evergreen guarantee. RTINGS characterizes Mullvad as privacy-focused and notes that major streaming services may challenge or block IP addresses associated with VPNs. If streaming matters, check a reviewer’s current testing and try the service during any applicable refund period rather than assuming access will persist.
