Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →No single VPN is the best for everyone. TechRadar’s comparison, updated 7 October 2026, names NordVPN its overall pick, Surfshark its lower-cost pick and Proton VPN its privacy-oriented pick. RTINGS divides its recommendations by use case: Mullvad for privacy-first use, NordVPN for streaming, and Proton VPN Free for everyday use without paying. Which service suits you depends on which of those priorities you rank first. This guide compares the 2026 published results side by side and explains where they agree and where they do not. It summarises third-party tests and comparisons. It does not add a new lab test of its own.
How the rankings are built
A single “best VPN” list hides the weighting behind it. Comparitech’s benchmark uses six categories: security, speed, streaming, ease of use, value and system performance. Each category is measured on a different cadence and carries its own confidence label, so a top score in one category does not guarantee a top score in another. Before you trust any ranking, check the following:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Privacy evidence: read the provider’s privacy policy, note what data it says it collects, and check the scope and date of any independent audit.
- Performance conditions: note the protocol, server distance, test location and the baseline speed measured without the VPN.
- Streaming claims: check which services and regions were tested, and when. Access can change at any time.
- Total cost: compare the upfront billed amount with the monthly equivalent, and confirm plan length and renewal price.
- Device fit: confirm how many devices can connect at once and whether a free tier exists.
Picks by priority
The table below shows which service each source names for each priority. The sections that follow explain the evidence and the trade-offs behind each pick.

Privacy: what to check beyond the label
Both “privacy-oriented” and “privacy-first” are editorial labels, not certifications. RTINGS reports that the comprehensiveness of audits and the broader policy practices differ between providers, so an audit result should be read against exactly what it covered.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Reading an audit
An audit of a defined claim, such as a no-logs statement tested over a stated period, is not proof of every company practice. When you read an audit, ask four questions: which systems were examined, over what period, who carried out the work, and when it was published. A provider that publishes a recent audit with a clear scope gives you more to evaluate than one that cites an audit without describing what it tested.
Mullvad and Proton VPN
RTINGS highlights Mullvad’s account-number sign-up and its acceptance of cash or cryptocurrency payment, which means no email address is required to start. Those options suit readers who want to minimise the personal data attached to an account. Mullvad’s trade-offs are practical: RTINGS says streaming sites can recognise and block its addresses, and that it does not support port forwarding. Proton VPN is the mainstream privacy pick in TechRadar’s comparison; its free version is covered in the device section below.
Speed and performance
Speed results depend on the test. The figures below come from two separate 2026 tests, and they measure different things, so they should not be combined into one ranking.

Artifact Security’s 2026 test
TechRadar reports the following headline figures from Artifact Security’s 2026 evaluation, which covered five origin regions and 55 route-pinned highways:
- 271.9 Mbps average download speed on Windows.
- 568.4 Mbps peak download median on Windows.
- 1.8 seconds average time to establish a working tunnel, with a 98 percent success rate.
- An overall score of 91 for NordVPN, in the five-provider comparison TechRadar reports.
The reporting cited here does not attribute the speed and tunnel figures to a specific provider, so do not read them as a per-service result.
Security.org’s January 2026 test

These are Security.org’s measurements from its own test conditions. They are not a guarantee of the speed you will get on your network, which depends on your connection, distance to the server and time of day.
Rank #3
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
On the quality of the test itself, TechRadar reproduces a response from Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN: “These results tell us the product is doing its job where it matters.” That is the vendor’s reaction to the results, not an independent validation of them.

Streaming access
RTINGS names NordVPN as its streaming pick, but it also warns that streaming platforms update their detection methods, so access can be interrupted even when it worked before. TechRadar notes that Surfshark does not unblock streaming services as well as NordVPN. RTINGS says paid features are needed for streaming with Proton VPN, and that Mullvad’s addresses can be recognised and blocked. The cited summaries do not name the specific services or countries behind these statements, so treat them as general indications and test the service you actually use during any trial period.
Value and billing
TechRadar lists Surfshark at $2.49 per month, billed as $67.23 upfront, in its comparison updated 7 October 2026. The reporting does not state the plan length behind that upfront figure, and it does not confirm renewal pricing, taxes or refund terms. Before you pay, confirm:

| Service | Simultaneous devices or connections | Free option and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | One device at a time on the free plan | Unlimited usage on the free plan, with randomised server selection. Streaming and torrenting need a paid plan (RTINGS) |
| Mullvad | Up to five simultaneous connections (RTINGS) | Not stated in the cited reporting. Accounts use a generated account number (RTINGS) |

If you need the free tier only occasionally, Proton VPN Free fits RTINGS’ everyday-use recommendation. If you need several devices covered at once, check the device count on the plan you intend to buy, because the free and paid limits differ and the cited sources do not state the figures for every service.
How to run your own check
Published tests show what happened under one set of conditions. You can check the fit for your own setup in an afternoon, ideally within a refund window.
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Run a speed test with the VPN off on the device you use most, and record download, upload and ping. Repeat it three times at the time of day you usually connect.
- Turn on the VPN, connect to a server near you, and repeat the test. Then connect to a server in a distant country and repeat it again.
- Open the streaming services you use and check whether the content loads from each server location you plan to use.
- Connect the number of devices you actually own at the same time, and confirm that each one stays connected.
- Check the provider’s own leak-test or diagnostic page, if it offers one, while connected, and note any IP or DNS details that differ from your normal connection.
- Cancel within the refund window if the results do not meet your needs, and keep the confirmation email.
Why published rankings disagree
TechRadar names one overall winner, while RTINGS separates its recommendations by use case and ranks services differently for privacy and streaming. Comparitech focuses on a multi-category benchmark with confidence labels. These approaches answer different questions, so their results should not be treated as contradictory. Use the source whose weighting matches your priority, and check the test date before you act on any figure.
The strongest single pick depends on what you need. For a balance of streaming and all-round use, NordVPN is the common choice across the sources cited here. For a lower monthly cost, Surfshark is the value pick, with the streaming trade-off noted above. For a privacy-first setup, Mullvad’s account and payment options are the clearest differentiator, though streaming access is weaker. For everyday use without paying, Proton VPN Free is the option to try first, with its one-device limit in mind.
