To send console traffic through a VPN, run the VPN on a compatible router or share a VPN connection from a Windows PC or Mac. Smart DNS is a separate option for some streaming or region-access needs; it does not encrypt all Xbox traffic through a VPN tunnel.
There is no universal best VPN for every Xbox One owner. The right choice depends on where you play, which server you need, your home network, and whether router support, computer sharing, or Smart DNS fits your setup.

What a VPN can—and cannot—do on Xbox One
Xbox One does not support native VPN apps. NordVPN Support puts the broader console limitation plainly: “Video gaming consoles do not support built-in VPN functionality.” NordVPN Support’s console setup documentation describes the provider’s recommended console connection methods.

A VPN connection routed through a computer or compatible router can carry Xbox traffic through an encrypted tunnel. It may help with privacy on the network or let you connect through a VPN server in another location, but it does not inherently lower ping, fix NAT, or improve every game connection. The extra distance and routing can also increase latency.

Smart DNS is different: it can help with compatible streaming apps or region-specific services, but it should not be treated as an encrypted VPN tunnel for all console traffic. Availability and supported uses vary by provider.
Which Xbox One VPN setup should you use?
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| VPN-compatible router | An always-on connection for the Xbox and potentially other home devices. | The router, firmware, and VPN protocol must support the provider’s setup. Check configuration requirements and throughput; ISP-supplied routers may not offer VPN setup. |
| Windows or Mac connection sharing | Someone who already has a suitable computer and wants to avoid configuring or buying a VPN router. | The computer and VPN connection must stay active. Hotspot, adapter sharing, and Ethernet sharing have different setup steps. |
| Smart DNS | Compatible streaming apps or region-specific services, where the provider offers the feature. | It is not equivalent to routing all Xbox traffic through an encrypted VPN tunnel. |
Choose a router if you want an always-on setup
A router-level VPN can keep the Xbox connected without leaving a computer running. Before buying a VPN-compatible router, check the exact model’s supported VPN protocols, firmware, throughput, and the provider’s configuration instructions. Compatibility is specific: a router that supports VPN features may not support every provider’s preferred setup. A VPN router is not a guaranteed way to lower ping or solve NAT problems.

| Use case or result | Provider and reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Distant-server ping | NordVPN: 215 ms ping to Japan. | Gizmodo’s test favored NordVPN for this distant-server result; it does not establish the best choice for every destination. |
| Vienna download speed | ExpressVPN: 181.62 Mbps. | The result came from Gizmodo’s Vienna test and does not predict a reader’s download speed. |
| Vienna ping | NordVPN: 38 ms; the other three providers in Gizmodo’s comparison: 20–24 ms. | NordVPN led the distant Japan ping comparison but had a higher Vienna ping than the other three providers in this test. |
| Vienna download speed | Private Internet Access: 147.06 Mbps, a 22.7% drop against Gizmodo’s baseline. | Gizmodo reported this as the weakest Vienna download result among the four providers it tested. |
Gizmodo published this four-provider comparison on September 28, 2026. Its test PC ran Windows 11 in Europe on a 190.36 Mbps connection with a 10 ms baseline ping; its cloud-gaming latency came from Xbox Cloud Gaming stream stats in a browser. Those conditions matter: performance can differ by provider server, game server, distance, device, ISP, and time. See Gizmodo’s Xbox VPN comparison and test details.
Top10VPN’s guide, updated June 16, 2026, favors ExpressVPN and explains router and PC-sharing approaches. It reports testing 59 VPNs, more than 30,000 total testing hours, and Xbox One S and Xbox Series X devices; those are the publisher’s stated methodology figures. Read Top10VPN’s Xbox VPN guide. TechRadar’s February 9, 2026 guide offers another comparison perspective, but providers can rank differently when the testing methods and priorities differ. Read TechRadar’s Xbox VPN guide.

How to choose for your own connection
Do not choose solely by a single advertised speed or a review’s overall winner. Match the provider to your intended use and verify the setup that will actually carry your Xbox traffic.
- For nearby multiplayer: Look for latency results close to your location and the game’s server region. A VPN route can add delay; compare your own connection with and without it.
- For a distant game server: Check whether the provider has a suitable server near that destination and consider the additional routing distance.
- For cloud gaming: Treat cloud-stream latency as its own measure, not as a proxy for all console gaming performance.
- For a router setup: Confirm the exact router model, firmware, VPN protocol, throughput, and provider configuration steps before purchase.
- For privacy features: Review the provider’s current policy and features directly rather than inferring them from a speed test.
- For cost: Check current subscription pricing and renewal terms directly; prices and offers can change.
- For Smart DNS: Confirm that the provider supports the service you need and distinguish DNS-based access from VPN encryption.
How to connect Xbox One through a VPN
Router method
- Check your router’s exact model and firmware for VPN-client support and confirm the VPN protocol required by the provider.
- Follow the provider’s setup instructions for that router and configure the VPN connection. Do not assume the router’s VPN feature is compatible with every provider.
- Connect the Xbox One to the configured router network, then verify the console is online and test the game or service you intend to use.
Windows PC or Mac sharing
- Install and connect to the VPN on the computer you will use to share the connection.
- Enable the operating system’s appropriate connection-sharing option—such as a Windows hotspot or adapter sharing, or the relevant Mac sharing setting. The steps differ by OS version and by whether the Xbox connects through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Connect the Xbox One to the shared network or Ethernet connection, and keep the computer awake and connected to the VPN while playing.
- Test the connection in the intended game or app. If it fails, confirm that sharing is enabled on the VPN-connected adapter and that the computer has not disconnected or gone to sleep.
Security.org summarizes the limitation this way: “Xbox doesn’t support native VPN apps, but you can connect via a router, Windows PC, Mac, or SmartDNS.” Security.org’s guide covers the available connection routes and router caveats. Because exact controls vary by system version, use the current instructions for your operating system and router rather than relying on a generic sequence of menu labels.
Quick Recap
Common problems and practical checks
- The Xbox cannot get online: Check the computer’s shared connection or router VPN configuration, confirm the VPN is connected, and verify the console is connected to the intended network.
- Latency is worse: Disconnect the VPN and compare the same game server under similar conditions. Try a closer VPN endpoint if your use case permits; a longer route may add delay.
- The router setup instructions do not match: Recheck the exact router model and firmware. ISP-provided hardware may not expose VPN-client configuration.
- A streaming app or service remains unavailable: Confirm that the provider supports that service and that you are using the intended Smart DNS or VPN method. Availability can vary.
- The connection stops when you leave the computer: Computer sharing depends on the computer and VPN remaining active; prevent sleep or use a router-based setup if you need an always-on connection.
