TechRadar’s broad September 2026 comparison ranks NordVPN first, while Comparitech’s narrower live tracker named Proton VPN its leader on October 2. Those findings use different tests and answer different questions. Choose by the services and regions you need, then check that the VPN works on your streaming device and still performs reliably.
Which VPN performs best for streaming in 2026?
For a broad mix of streaming services, TechRadar’s September 11, 2026 comparison puts NordVPN first. Its reported checks covered Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and other services, but the results were not uniformly successful: TechRadar described strong performance with Netflix, Disney+, iPlayer, ITVX, 9Now and TVNZ+, and difficulty with Prime Video Australia and YouTube US.

For a narrower comparison based on Netflix and BBC iPlayer, Comparitech’s live tracker named Proton VPN its leader at 78% when updated October 2, 2026. That score is based on those two services, not every platform in the tracker. The tracker covered 10 VPNs, 15 services and nine regions over a 28-day window, reporting 6.6K stream tests. In its captured Netflix entries, Proton VPN unblocked sampled US and UK checks, while NordVPN was marked partial. Those observations apply to the recorded sample, not every endpoint or subscriber.
The results are not directly interchangeable: one is a broad editorial comparison, while the other is a live dataset whose published score uses only two services. TechRadar also cautions that streaming access can change as platforms work to block VPN connections. A ranking is a useful starting point, not a guarantee for your account, location or device.

What do the 2026 tests actually show?
| Source and date | Scope | Reported result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| TechRadar, September 11, 2026 | Broad comparison across Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and other services | Ranks NordVPN first; reports strong results on several services, with exceptions including Prime Video Australia and YouTube US | Useful for a varied service mix, but the article itself reports service-specific failures. |
| Comparitech, updated October 2, 2026 | Live 28-day window covering 10 VPNs, 15 services and nine regions; 6.6K tests reported | Names Proton VPN the leader at 78%; the published score is based only on Netflix and BBC iPlayer | A dated tracker snapshot, not a market-wide or all-services success rate. |
| Top10VPN, updated September 2026 | BBC iPlayer-focused guide; reports testing 59 VPNs | Ranks NordVPN first with a 9.8/10 overall rating; reports a last test in September 2026 and lists 440 UK servers across Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Manchester | These are the guide’s test and service-count claims; they do not establish current infrastructure or guaranteed access. |
| Tom’s Guide, March 27, 2026 retest | Dated NordVPN retest across named streaming services | Reports access to Netflix libraries in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Japan, plus Disney+, BBC iPlayer, ITV, Channel 4, 9Now and 10 Play; reports difficulty with YouTube US and Prime Video Australia | A useful cross-check on NordVPN, with the same kind of service-specific exceptions seen elsewhere. |
How to choose for your services and devices
Start with the exact service and country catalog you want to use. A VPN that works with one Netflix region may not work with another service or region, and success on a computer does not establish compatibility with a television or streaming device.
- Service and region: look for recent results for the specific platform and library you need, rather than a general claim that a VPN “unblocks streaming.”
- Repeatability and playback: favor evidence of repeat tests and stable playback, not a single successful connection. Buffering, speed and continuity matter especially for live events.
- Device support: confirm native VPN app support for the exact TV or streaming device and model. TechRadar lists Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV and Roku among the device categories it considers. A VPN-enabled router may be another route, but setup and compatibility depend on the router model.
- Connections and support: compare simultaneous-device limits and customer support against the number of screens in your household.
- Privacy and cost: assess privacy evidence, including independent audits, and compare the full subscription term, renewal amount and device allowance. Prices and promotions change, so check the provider’s current terms before subscribing.
For live sports or other live events, assess continuity separately from on-demand library access. TechRadar reported live-event dropouts for Proton VPN and said Norton had more live-event issues than NordVPN. These are that publication’s reported test observations, not a guarantee of how a future event will play.

What to do when a streaming service blocks the VPN
A service may block a VPN connection even if the VPN worked previously or works with another platform. For BBC iPlayer, Top10VPN says detection is strict and notes that recommended services may still fail inconsistently. Its suggested troubleshooting options are to try another UK server, clear the browser or app cache and cookies, or switch protocol. These are suggestions, not guaranteed fixes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check whether the problem is limited to one service or region; other services may still work through the same connection.
- If you are troubleshooting iPlayer, try a different UK server, clear cache and cookies, or change protocol, as Top10VPN suggests.
- Check your provider’s current support guidance for the app and device you are using. Do not assume that a particular country count or one successful test means every server will work.
- If access remains blocked, use the service’s permitted options rather than treating VPN access as assured.
Legal and terms considerations
The Independent’s UK guide says VPN use is legal in the UK, while using a VPN to access geo-restricted streaming can breach a service’s terms and may lead to access restrictions or blocking. This legal statement is UK-specific; readers elsewhere should check the rules where they are located and the terms of the relevant streaming service. A VPN subscription does not itself grant a right to view a particular catalog.
