There is no single best VPN for every iPad owner. TechRadar names NordVPN its overall pick, while its comparison highlights Surfshark for speed and streaming and Proton VPN for privacy; Macworld and Tom’s Guide make their own editorial selections. Treat these as starting points, not guarantees: what matters most is whether the provider’s privacy practices, iPad app, subscription terms, and performance fit your needs.
How to choose an iPad VPN
A VPN routes eligible internet traffic through a provider’s service. That can help protect traffic on networks you do not control and change the apparent location of your connection, but it also places trust in the VPN company. Apple warns that an active VPN provider may be able to see, intercept, and modify your online activity. Read the provider’s privacy practices before connecting, rather than treating the VPN label as proof of privacy (Apple: VPNs & Privacy).

- Provider trust: Read the privacy policy and logging disclosures. Look for clear explanations of what data is collected and how long it is retained. If a provider cites an independent audit, check its scope and date instead of assuming it covers every service or app.
- iPad app: Confirm the app supports your iPad and that the features you care about are available on iPadOS. A feature advertised for another platform may not work identically on the iPad.
- Streaming and travel: Review recent tests for the services and locations relevant to you. A review’s successful connection is a result at that time, not a promise of future access; streaming services may restrict VPN use under their applicable rules.
- Speed: Treat performance results as conditional on the reviewer’s device, network, server, and test method. Your connection can differ, and using a VPN may reduce speed.
- Devices and price: Check the current plan’s simultaneous-connection limit, billing period, renewal price, and refund or trial conditions for your region. These terms and promotional prices can change.
Which VPNs are worth comparing?
Recent editorial comparisons point to several candidates, but their labels reflect each publication’s criteria—not a universal ranking. The table summarizes the positioning reported by those publications; it does not independently verify current features or guarantee results.

|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | TechRadar names it its overall iPad pick; Tom’s Guide also identifies it as its best iPad VPN tested. | Confirm current iPad features, device limit, price, renewal terms, and the provider’s privacy disclosures. TechRadar; Tom’s Guide. |
| Surfshark | TechRadar highlights it as a budget-oriented choice for speed and streaming; Macworld presents it as a multi-device option. | Check current plan pricing, simultaneous-connection terms, and iPad app features. Do not assume a past price or device limit still applies. TechRadar; Macworld. |
| Proton VPN | TechRadar and Macworld both position it as an option for privacy-conscious users. | Compare the current free and paid plans separately; their features and limits may differ. Review the privacy policy and the details behind any audit claim. TechRadar; Macworld. |
| ExpressVPN | TechRadar calls it beginner-friendly. Tom’s Guide reports its own iPad kill-switch test and app connection observations. | Check which controls are available in the current iPad app and compare current subscription and renewal terms. Tom’s Guide’s reported test is not a guarantee for every device or network. TechRadar; Tom’s Guide. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | TechRadar includes it among its iPad options and identifies a dedicated iPad app. | If customization is important, verify which controls the current iPad app actually offers. TechRadar. |
These comparisons do not establish a stable winner by price, server count, device limit, or streaming access. Those details can vary by plan, region, and date, so check the provider’s current terms before paying.

Is iCloud Private Relay enough, or do you need a VPN?
They are not interchangeable tools. Macworld describes iCloud Private Relay as focused on Safari and says it does not offer a virtual-location choice for streaming. If you need VPN coverage for more than Safari or want to choose a VPN endpoint location, compare a dedicated VPN app with the privacy protections already enabled on your iPad. Apple’s privacy warning still applies: a VPN shifts trust to the provider rather than removing the need to assess who handles your traffic (Macworld; Apple).
Are free VPNs a good choice for iPad?
A free plan can be useful if its limits suit your needs, but “free” does not describe a single model. Compare data allowances, available locations, speed, included features, and data-handling practices with the paid plan. TechRadar’s comparison reports a 10 GB limit for its highlighted free option; treat that as the publication’s snapshot, not a current guarantee, and verify the provider’s live plan terms before relying on it (TechRadar).

How to install a VPN on iPad
For most personal users, the simplest route is the VPN provider’s App Store app. Apple also documents manual configuration in Settings. The exact options depend on the service and configuration type.

- Install the provider’s app from the App Store. Open it and follow its setup prompts. Review the requested VPN configuration before allowing it.
- Connect in the app. Choose a server or location if the provider offers that choice, then use the app’s connect control. Check the app’s status to confirm the connection.
- For a manual setup, open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN > Add VPN Configuration. Enter the configuration details supplied by your VPN provider or administrator; do not guess server or account settings.
Apple documents IKEv2/IPsec and L2TP/IPsec configurations, as well as SSL-VPN through an appropriate App Store client. Will a VPN slow down an iPad?
It can, but there is no single slowdown figure that applies to every iPad. Results depend on the network, VPN server, distance, provider, and how the service is being used. Published speed tests are meaningful only alongside the reviewer’s test conditions; they cannot predict your connection exactly. If a connection feels slow, try a nearby server or disconnect briefly to compare, then choose a provider based on repeated results on the networks you actually use.
