Check those two things before comparing services: ChromeOS has built-in VPN options, while consumer VPN apps generally need Google Play support. Proton VPN, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN publish Chromebook setup guidance, but the available evidence does not establish a universal winner or a neutral speed, reliability, or value ranking.
Check whether your Chromebook can use the VPN route you need
ChromeOS offers built-in VPN connections, but supported protocols and setup steps vary by device. Google lists IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, basic OpenVPN, and WireGuard on some Chromebooks. For advanced OpenVPN features or importing an .ovpn configuration, Google suggests considering OpenVPN for Android, if your Chromebook supports Android apps. Android apps are available only on some Chromebooks through Google Play. Check your model’s compatibility and whether the Play Store is enabled before choosing a service based on its Android app. If a school or employer manages the Chromebook, its administrator may block Play Store access or app downloads; ask the administrator about permitted VPN options. Choose the setup type that matches your use
Built-in ChromeOS VPN
A built-in connection can suit readers whose VPN provider supports a protocol available on their Chromebook and who are comfortable entering the required connection details. Support is device-dependent, and basic OpenVPN support is not the same as the advanced features or configuration import available through some Android apps.

Android VPN app
A provider’s Android app is a practical route when the Chromebook supports Google Play and the provider supports Chromebook use. Apps may also expose controls such as split tunneling or always-on behavior, but availability and operation depend on the particular app and configuration.
Browser extension
A browser extension is not automatically a device-wide VPN. Confirm whether it protects only browser traffic or establishes a VPN connection for Chrome, Android apps, and other device traffic. If you need protection beyond browser activity, choose a setup that routes the relevant device traffic rather than assuming an extension does so.

Understand full tunnel, split tunnel, and disconnect behavior
Google describes a full tunnel this way: “Typically, VPNs implement a full tunnel, which means that all traffic from all Chrome windows, Chrome apps and Android apps will pass through the VPN connection.” With split tunneling, selected traffic can be excluded—for example, to retain local-network access. The precise behavior depends on the app and configuration. Google’s VPN guide explains both approaches.
If you need an enforced always-on connection on a managed Chromebook, review how the VPN behaves when it disconnects. Google says that with an enforced Always-on VPN, traffic is blocked if the connection fails until it reconnects. Google also cautions that ChromeOS does not control Android app behavior after power loss. Consult the administrator or the relevant app documentation for the configuration that applies to your device. Google’s Android VPN app guidance for managed devices describes these controls.

Chromebook VPN services to investigate
These providers publish Chromebook-related setup information. Their documentation makes them candidates to check, not a ranked recommendation or proof of independent performance.
- Proton VPN: Its support documentation describes an Android app for Chromebooks that support Android apps and Google Play. Check that your specific Chromebook meets those requirements.
- NordVPN: It publishes a Chromebook setup article and notes that older Chromebook models may not support its Android application. Verify compatibility for your model before subscribing.
- ExpressVPN: Its Chromebook tutorial, last updated September 3, 2026, conditions setup on Android-app support. Confirm Play Store availability on your device.
Before committing to any service, check its current Chromebook instructions, supported setup method, paid-plan features, and device limit against your own needs. The available provider documentation does not support a neutral comparison of speed, reliability, or price.

A simple decision checklist
- Check whether your exact Chromebook model supports Google Play and Android apps.
- If the device is managed by a school or employer, confirm that app installation or a built-in VPN connection is allowed.
- Decide whether you need device-wide VPN coverage, a particular built-in protocol, advanced OpenVPN features, or an imported
.ovpnconfiguration. - Check the provider’s current Chromebook setup instructions and confirm which traffic its app or extension routes.
- Review split-tunnel and always-on controls, disconnect behavior, paid-plan features, and device limits before choosing.
